James, there is no way SP cut up Laci. Her limbs and head were torn off by currents and waves as she was weighted down these months under water. First, there's no reason to decapitate her. It makes an evil task much more difficult. Second, decapitating her would have released large amounts of blood and flesh wherever he did it that would have been seen.
Since SP is evil and he worships himself, you could say he's into devil worship.

The only defense possible at this point in my opinion is that he was framed. By telling police where he was, he can say that the killer dumped her body where he was to frame him and allow the real killer to go free. I have posed this question before, which is I don't know whether he planned that or not from the beginning when telling the police where he was.
fallout qrote: "Happy Easter Everybody. You guys are the best. There's more news in this thread than on any of the other major news sources including CNN, Drudge or the others."
This is one hell of a group of cybersleuths. It's a great spring day out there today. I wish Chandra and Laci and other women who disappeared could enjoy it too. Thanks James.

quote from the ModBee: " In the back seat sat a man an entire nation has come to recognize during the past four months. Peterson sat with his hands cuffed behind him, staying quiet the entire ride, detectives said."
Actually, as you say maggie, it's obvious he was trying not to be someone the entire nation recognized. He probably was trying to find a way to scoot across the border and couldn't shake the tails. Good police work.

Another portion of the Woman Missing in Modesto thread moved to Some Background Information. Thanks for a very readable log for those interested in Laci, Chandra, and others.

I just heard this on Fox. I may not have heard it correctly. They were interviewing two defense lawyers and one stated that Scott "has got himself one heck of an experienced defense attorney-Stanford Brand"!
I did hear 'Stanford' not Stanley. Looking around to see if I can find the formal name. Wasn't this Mike Dayton's attorney?

From the Mod Bee June 12, 2002 by Mike Doyle
"Another top Condit staffer, legislative director Mike Dayton, hired an attorney last summer at about the same time as Lynch. Neither he nor his attorney, Stanley Brand, returned calls asking whether Dayton had recently been subpoenaed by the grand jury." |

Last I heard it was Kirk McAllister. Of course McAllister could have handed the case over either because the family wanted bigger guns or the lawyer withdrew. If you remember OJ Simpson's first lawyer withdrew. Of course he couldn't say specifically why, but it was clear he knew, probably because of some confession via Simpson, that he was guilty and did not feel he could provide a vigorous defense.
| Quote: | Arrested near golf course
Agents arrested Peterson after pulling him over in a Mercedes-Benz that he was driving near Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla.
Authorities declined to comment on the evidence against Peterson, but Lockyer offered his opinion on its totality.
"This is a compellingly strong case," he said. "I would call the odds slam-dunk that he is going to be convicted."
Peterson's attorney, Kirk McAllister of Modesto, could not be reached for comment.
Peterson's family, many of whom live in the San Diego area, also could not be reached.
Members of Laci Peterson's family asked for privacy and announced that they would make a public statement at 4 p.m. Monday. |

Boy did Laurie Dhue just get it wrong. She was talking to this cop and brought up Kristin Smart saying she was Scott's previous girlfriend.
Before this starts up the rumour mill, here is the most knowlegeble site on Kristin Smart. There's always been another suspect in mind and they don't believe Kristen knew Scott.

You can read the facts of the Kristin Smart case and the prime suspect here:

At least I hope some of this publicity does get some more interest in her case. She disappeared back in 1996. |

Anytime Kristen or Chandra are mentioned in the news it can't hurt attention being given to their cases. We'll do our part anyway.

| Is that why photos of his brothers have never (as far as I've noticed) been seen in the press, I wonder. Has it always been a family plan that Scott would use one of their IDs? |

Geraldo had a special on Laci Peterson. It was mentioned that Scott made two calls, one of whom was to a woman who was the Maid of Honor at their wedding. This was apparantly shocking to her as she hadn't been in contact with him recently.
What's up with that? Trying to hit on Laci's friends now?
And the next question: Where did he get the $10,000? They'll probably never charge any of them, but you KNOW at least some of the family was in on this.
It's been speculated (and I think correctly) that it was because of the wiretaps and the vehicle montor that the police didn't want the search warrant public.
I found it interesting on that video, maggie, that two of Scott and Lacis' friends also found Scott suspicious back in January and said (although they didn't specify) that he was lying to them and being devious. They also spoke to the woman who was the realtor and family friend that said Scott approached her early on about selling the house.
There's a story on Scott, but it's such a puff piece (you'd think Jackie wrote it), I'm not going to bother to copy it--just the link.
Scott Peterson's life presents picture rife with conflicts

Not so happy today though:
| Quote: | Inside the Modesto jail Saturday, Peterson was locked down, alone in a maximum-security cell as a sheriff's deputy stood watch six feet away. Peterson asked if he could get a haircut. And nearly a week after the skeletal remains of his pregnant wife, Laci, washed ashore in San Francisco Bay, and a day after his arrest, he seemed to be a bit frightened.
"He appeared calm, nervous, perhaps a little scared," said Kelly Huston, a spokesman for the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. "He also appears like how you would expect someone to appear who has never been in jail before."
...
Peterson was given a standard orange jail jumpsuit and has received no special treatment, Huston said. He was told that he would get a haircut when the rest of his jail wing did.
Also, Huston said, Peterson was told that a counselor was available to him if he wanted to talk. "He didn't respond," Huston said, "but his eyes welled up and it looked like he was going to cry Obviously, we are concerned about his mental health." |
Go on crybaby...cry. |

| Maybe (as has been mentioned before) if Scott had been expected to face up to his mistakes and their consequences while he grew up (as he is finally having to do now) these terrible things (Laci's and Connor's murders) would never have occurred. |

Another thing I heard first on another board and apparently is true is Scott was driving ANOTHER CAR, not the truck when arrested. Said to be a black Mercedes (that part's not confirmed) but seriously IRONIC if true. If you remember, Scott claimed Laci wanted to trade in the SUV and get a Mercedes. Don't know if he purchased it or it is a lease/rental or if he borrowed it from a relative. Also unknown if he figured out they had put a GPS device on his truck and so he switched cars and if they managed to bug the new car.
This report is interesting:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/West/04/19/otsc.brooks.peterson/index.html
Mike Brooks: Police had case before bodies found
(CNN) --Scott Peterson was being held in California on suspicion of killing his pregnant wife, Laci, whose remains and those of their unborn boy were found on the San Francisco Bay shoreline. CNN's Mike Brooks spoke with CNN anchor Heidi Collins from Modesto, California.
BROOKS: Scott Peterson is under arrest and locked up a few blocks away from here at the Stanislaus County jail. He was picked up yesterday by Modesto police in San Diego. They had been following him around for ... days using some different technology. The attorney general is saying they had a bug on his car so they would know exactly where he was going.
A couple of times, he even got out and came back and spoke to detectives and said basically, "Why don't you go ahead and arrest me?" They finally did yesterday afternoon.
A short time ago last hour, I spoke with (Modesto) Police Chief Roy Wasden. They discovered the remains of a child and woman last Saturday in San Francisco Bay [later identified as Laci Peterson and her unborn baby boy]. I asked the chief if they had not found those remains, would they still have a case against Scott Peterson.
(Videotape)
CHIEF ROY WASDEN: We believe that we were very close to having enough information to make an arrest in this case. Of course, the discovery of the remains really accelerated everything forward, but the detectives were working toward that conclusion. They were consulting with the prosecutors, the district attorney's office.
BROOKS: Now, the autopsy was performed on the adult that we now know is Laci Peterson. They have still not determined a cause of death. So they're going to go back. The body was not totally intact. They're going to go back later, the chief says, and attempt to search for more evidence in San Francisco Bay.
Yesterday, at the time of his arrest, we had seen Scott Peterson during a number of searches and all along the last four months. Yesterday, when he was booked into the jail here in Modesto, his hair was lighter and he had a full beard. Now, the law enforcement was concerned since he was so close to Mexico that he could have been a flight risk and that is one of the reasons they went ahead and arrested him yesterday.
COLLINS: I know a while back in February they had done an extensive search of Laci and Scott's home, as well, in order to try to find possibly some sort of evidence or articles to look at that might be of interest, something like 95 items were taken from the home and the yard and their cars.
Any idea what has happened to that and will that now come into play as they try to build the evidence or the case, I should say, against Scott Peterson?
BROOKS: Well, that was the second search they had done of the home and in talking to law enforcement sources, they did get some evidence out of the home. Now, they were there for two days. They were also assisted by the FBI's evidence response team that worked here in the area with the Modesto police and law enforcement sources said they did glean some positive evidence out of the home.
As you also recall in the first searches, they took his truck and his boat. They still have the truck and the boat and have not returned that to him. Yesterday, when he had the time of his arrest, he was apparently driving a different car. Whose car that was, we still don't know. He is arrested here and locked up in the Stanislaus County jail and will be arraigned.
The district attorney says he could face the death penalty on capital murder for the double homicide of Laci and his unborn son. |
