>>>Interesting choice of a business for the Condit family- Baskin- Robbins ice cream. Wasn't it Baskin-Robbins coupons that Chandra had printed out on her computer on May 1? Chandra doesn't strike me as an ice cream type person. Maybe Gary is more the B-R enthustiast?<<<

Did Condit make a Freudian slip? Of course he did not do anything to give himself away, but if Chandra was planning on going to Baskin-Robbins, then she pointed a finger towards Condit on her computer. Chandra was exposing Condit one way or another, conciously or subconciously.

Then along comes Gary Condit and buys a Raskin-Robbins franchise.

But why the big effort to disassociate Chandra from all of the other women that Condit dated? Anne Marie Smith has been slandered by the Condits saying that she wanted 15 minutes of fame. Why don't they tell the truth and say that she was afraid for her own safety. One thing the Condits did get right, and that was that the DC Police did not do a good job. There again Chad and Cadee tried to single out one person, Police Chief Gainer. They did not mention Ramsey.

The wheels of justice are still churning. Chandra is one spirit behind them.

The Baskin-Robbins franchise owned by the Condits reminds me of my daughter trudging 500' though her back yard to feed the deer- from whom she acquired Lyme disease. Well, a deer tick in any case.

I forgot what that is called in psychology but hopefully someone here will recall? If not, I'll have to Google. It's when you are drawn to something that you fear or something that represents that fear.

Peri, any ideas?

Somehow, I do believe it is significant. You and I must be on the same wave-length, Peri.

Benn, the only thing that I can guess that would cause a person's face/facial features to distort or become contorted is rage. Pure unadulterated rage.

Condit had his heart set on the Oval Office. Wasn't it his girlfriend Rossi who stated that he told her that NOTHING was going to get in the way of his running (or becoming?) President?

I'm sure that he was being groomed by the Dems for the spot. If not President, then VP with an eye on more down the road.

That is a huge dream to have explode in your face- especially when you have been so careful for so long.

Chandra became a problem by asking the wrong questions. She opened a door that had long since been closed. Can you imagine the rage he must have felt about that?

Peri, I agree that the remark that Cadee made about Linda Zamsky was uncalled for and mean spirited. If Chandra really felt that way about Linda, that makes Linda's testimony all the more valid, IMO. That remark could be turned on the Condits.

Fact is, the whole interview could be used by the Dunne defense.

rd, I could have sworn that I read that Chandra had a printer. Must be brain fog. Too bad that they have never confirmed all the links that were visited on her computer on May 1. I recall a few that were listed. Strange, how that hard drive crashed. They must have gleaned some info from it prior to the 'crash'. Remember the list of 22 (I think) sites that were on her history? Who leaked that?

The DC police announced the list on July 16 to see if it meant anything to anyone in the public seeing the list. They withheld some "evidentiary" sites, which as I say, incomplete information means incomplete feedback. They were incomptent in everything they did, even in divulging information.

The printed out coupon is from one reporter, Isikoff of Newsweek, in one article. He could be screwed up, who knows, he never responded to an email from me. I point out his statement in Murder on a Horse Trail and question it.

A minor detail like that is nothing to a hot shot reporter, I'm sure. He wrote far worse than that before it was all over. I comment on all of it in the book. Regardless of his motive, he did provide different information which helped put the other reporting in perspective.

Condit has not explained the reason for his many girlfriends, or how he expected to explain to his voters all of the girlfriends that he had. Condit was a smart politician who knew how to get votes, but he also certainly knew what would not get him votes, and that was for the public to become aware of his many girlfriends.

Is was an informed electorate who made a decision about Condit's strange private life, and who voted him out of office. It is clear that Condit did not want an informed electorate, and he tried hard to keep his voters from knowing what he was doing in secret. For Condit to blame anyone but himself for his exposure and ouster from office is nonsense. He did what he did, and the buck stopped at his office. He was voted out for good reason.

Today he, and his children, are still trying to deceive the public. It is his children who are deceived. Chad and Cadee were correct in saying that the DC police did not do a good job in investigating, but a good investigation by the police would probably not have arrived at the conclusion that Chad and CAdee are looking for.

Maybe time will tell.

Is this revelatory?

CHAD CONDIT: "How many people ask about Chandra Levy? How many people at the D.C. Police department saying, are you going to find the murderer? Nobody is because Gary's not in Congress anymore. Nobody gives a hoot anymore."

My question to young Squire Condit might be:

If you are part of a research effort to extend the statute of limitations on defamation of character pertaining to your Father's situation shouldn't you be aware that there is a new Grand Jury busy looking into the case? Are you being jejeune or are you deliberately misleading me? Cut the fake cowboy stuff and give me triple scoop of Rocky Road!

James

By the way, Nanci, Go for it!: "does anyone here dare me to phone every baskin robbins in the greater phoenix area and ask to speak to gary?" (Reminder: Nanci don't use caps)

And you would only have to call everyone in the greater Glendale area. :) But at allegedly two weeks old, may be a very new phone listing.

From the interview, it looks like Chad and Cadee are running it, Condit not there, busy suing Dunne, they said. Looks like they have all moved from Modesto to Pheonix, or maybe Chad's family still lives there on Acorn Dr. in Ceres for now while Chad and Cadee are staying with Carolyn.

And Condit? I haven't read of Gary and Carolyn being seen together since. Just like the old days.

I agree, rd.

I recall the list but only a few links on it. Air France, GC's schedule for Congress that day and a few others.

One that I do recall is National Geographic. On that link, there was a story about the Apple Blossom Festival that was being held the first week in May near Luray. I've always thought that was a key.

The Apple Blossom Festival is huge. Many celebs, Pols and some bikers as well.

Since the first time that I viewed that 1st page on that link, I've thought that someone must have invited Chandra to that festival. That, or told her that they were going? More likely the former.

I recall that someone was trying to make it seem as though the Air France link was a connection to the Mossad. That the page had a 'hole' where you could get through to another area for information. I don't recall who was promoting that theory.

The links about Congress are obvious. If anyone were to think that Chandra had any other love interests, those links should confirm otherwise.

Something just occurred to me about the Dunne case. Condit is saying that Dunne's info damaged him career-wise. We know that is not the case- that Condit was damaged prior to the December 2001 broadcast.
I've read where Pols have on-going polls (funny- Pols have polls) to keep an eye on voter confidence. Given that, couldn't Paul LaCalsi provide a chart that could prove that Condit's numbers were down prior to Dunne's statements?

Seems to me that given the statements that Condit has already made that are know to be false (I didn't have sex with that woman) and can be proven circumstantially and adding the chart that proves that Condit's voter confidence was already in the basement, they would win with no problem.

The crux of the matter is when Condit's reputation was ruined. Those charts, if they still exist, would prove that one way or the other.

I'm gonna Google.

James, I like the new word 'je-june'. Had to look it up. I never heard that one before. I'd say it nails the 'young squires' diatribe succinctly.

je·june Audio pronunciation of "jejune" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (j-jn)
adj.

1. Not interesting; dull: “and there pour forth jejune words and useless empty phrases” (Anthony Trollope).
2. Lacking maturity; childish: surprised by their jejune responses to our problems.
3. Lacking in nutrition: a jejune diet.

Too funny!

Very good skipper. I was just looking at old news reports written prior to December 2001 asking Condit to resign, or discussing the case from the point of view of him being an adulterer. Ted Kennedy made a remark that if all adulterers were removed from Congress that there would be no one left.

This is from the Modbee. The publication date was August 12, 2001. Dunne's attorney should collect a bunch of old newspaper clippings.

>>> EDITORIAL: Condit should resign

Last Updated: May 28, 2002, 02:12:52 PM PDT

(Published: Sunday, August 12, 2001)

Gary Condit should resign.

His behavior since Chandra Levy disappeared more than three months ago has been abhorrent.

This paper -- and the people he represents -- have attempted to give Condit the benefit of the doubt, while urging him to speak publicly in detail about his involvement. He has refused to do that, even while disturbing details about his role have become public. Still Condit has offered no explanation, no defense, no remorse.<<<

Lin Wood and Gary Condit must be blind, and they must think that all the rest of us are also blind, or stupid. Some of the news reports prior to Dunne's remarks about Condit should be brought into court.<<< snip

A Plaintiff has to prove his case. What proof does Condit have that his reputation was ruined by Dunne? Lin Wood is trying to avoid everything else that was going on in the world and make it a case just between Condit and Dunne. Ratings polls would be a good argument for Dunne.

I agree, Skipper and Benn.

My impression is that it was the emerging facts of Condit's double life that made his popularity begin to nosedive. Some of his constituents had already known that he had a wild side, but many had believed in his squeaky-clean-family-man act and were stunned to find out it was just an act. It seems that most of his colleagues and probably a large number of his constituents withheld judgement until the Connie Chung interview in August 2001, and THAT is what truly did him in. And it was NOT, as Gary Condit and his clone family insist, Connie Chung's fault that in the interview he portrayed himself as a weird, creepy, scary, unfeeling robot.

BTW, the irony about the Baskin-Robbins franchise struck me, too.

Not blind, Benn, as Chad stated:

Quote:
How many people ask about Chandra Levy? How many people at the D.C. Police department saying, are you going to find the murderer? Nobody is because Gary's not in Congress anymore. Nobody gives a hoot anymore. If Gary would have won we would have solved this thing because he would have been there to remind them ever day.

They think that no one is interested. No one cares.

That is why they think that they can slide this by. They think that no one cares anymore.

And they distort the facts in almost every utterance. Cadee stated that Condit called the FBI - I don't recall that. I read that it was a cousin of Chandra's that brought the FBI into the case.

Cadee also mentioned that Gar gave daily interviews. I don't think so. That was another problem that his constituents had with him. He dodged the media. The reverse was the truth.

They are counting on no one remembering the facts.

And they have the nerve to speak of accountability. For Dunne, the Bees, the DC police- every one else. Must be a little known Congressman's exclusion?

Here they are working hard to change a law so that 'they' can sue yet more people. I'm sure they have their collective eyeballs on the Bee.

They would have to get finished with the Dunne case in order to pull that one off because the Bee(s) stated the facts far before Dunne jumped into the fray. That would be confusing.

As to the polls- I have found some info out there.

CBS Poll: Condit In Trouble With Voters

NEW YORK, July 19, 2001

Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif. (Photo: AP)

Click here for more on this CBS News/New York Times poll.

(CBS) Most of the people Gary Condit represents believe he has impeded the police investigation into former federal intern Chandra Levy’s disappearance and has asked at least one other woman to lie about a sexual relationship.

However, Condit’s constituents still say he has done a good job as their congressman, and while a majority of voters say they would not vote for him again if he ran for re-election, only a third say that he should resign his seat now.

CBSNEWS Polls

CONDIT’S JOB PERFORMANCE AND HIS FUTURE

More than half of Condit's constituents in California’s Congressional District 18 say Condit has done a good or excellent job as their Representative, even though their personal opinion of him is unfavorable. Sixteen percent describe his job performance as excellent, another 35 percent say he’s done a good job, 25 percent rate his job performance as fair and 12 percent say he’s done a poor job.

As for the future, nearly two-thirds of Condit’s constituents say his job performance has been affected by the recent news, and half say it has seriously interfered with his job performance. A quarter, however, say his performance has not been affected by this.

CBSNEWS Polls

Although most respondents don’t think Condit should resign – at least for now – he gets relatively little support should he decide to run for re-election. Fifty-three percent of voters in his district say they would not vote for him if he ran for re-election. Only 24 percent would vote for him in 2002.

In 2000, Condit was re-elected with 67 percent of the vote in his district. The majority that would not vote for him in 2002 includes 43 percent of those who were part of that landslide victory just last November. While the sentiment for resignation is much lower, those in favor include one in four of the 2000 Condit voters.

53%
CBSNEWS Polls

Respondents in his district seem a little more tolerant than people statewide (and that may be because Condit’s constituents have information about his record in Congress as well as the current scandals to rely on). Among all Californians, 37 percent say Condit should resign and 45 percent say he should finish his term.

CONDIT’S ROLE IN THE LEVY DISAPPEARANCE

Condit’s constituents (along with most Californians) don't think Condit was involved with Chandra Levy's disappearance last May. However, it appears to be mostly because people aren’t sure what to think rather than complete belief in his innocence. As of now, 31 percent say he was involved in the disappearance.

Whatever his direct involvement, most people do think that he's done things wrong. Sixty-five percent of his constituents say he seriously hurt the police investigation into Levy’s disappearance by holding back information at first. Seventy-three percent say it bothers them that he did o. Fifty-five percent say he hasn’t yet told the police everything he knows, and 61 percent say that he probably did ask flight attendant Anne Marie Smith to lie about their affair.

The FBI earlier this week officially transferred the Chandra Levy investigation to its "Cold Case" unit, which historically has handled only the toughest of cases which have few clues, CBS News has learned.

MORALITY AND OFFICEHOLDERS: DO THEY ALL DO IT?

Condit's moral values are an issue with voters in his district. Seven in ten say that his moral values do matter to them when they evaluate his job performance. Nearly four in ten say Condit’s moral values matter a lot.

But many people say that Condit’s behavior – at least when it comes to extramarital liaisons – is not all that unusual among members of Congress. In fact, two-thirds of his constituents and a majority of all Californians believe that at least half of all senators and representatives have had affairs outside of marriage.

THE CLINTON PARALLEL?

Some of these responses are reminiscent of those given by the American public two years ago, during the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. Then, while many Americans believed President Clinton had lied under oath, in most polls only a third supported his resignation.

Feds Downplay Condit Connection
The FBI earlier this week officially transferred the Chandra Levy investigation to its "Cold Case" unit, which historically has handled only the toughest of cases which have few clues, CBS News has learned.
But public reaction to Mr. Clinton’s scandals was sharply divided along party lines. That partisan difference is not as clear in this instance, at least in Condit’s district. Both Republicans and Democrats in California’s 18th Congressional District say Condit has done a good job in office, and neither party’s supporters think he should resign. But when it comes to voting in the next election, partisan differences re-emerge. By 66 percent to 16 percent, registered Republicans say they would not vote for Condit again. Among registered Democrats, the margin is closer; 37 percent of registered Democrats say they would vote for Condit but 43 percent say they would not, includinmany of those who say they voted for him last November.

And while more women than men supported Mr. Clinton, that’s not as clear here. If anything, women are somewhat more suspicious. In Condit’s own district, women are more likely than men to say they are bothered a lot that Condit initially misled the public and the police about his relationship with Chandra Levy. Statewide, women are slightly more likely than men are to think he might be involved with Levy’s disappearance.

THE MEDIA

Most Californians are following this story closely - as are about three-quarters of those in Condit's district. Those following it very closely react more negatively to Condit’s actions than those who are following it less closely.

As for the news media’s coverage, by about two to one Californians say the media has acted responsibly in covering the story. Those in Condit’s district also see the media as responsible, though by a slightly narrower margin.

This poll was conducted among a total sample of 1,001 California adults; including 566 adults in California’s 18th Congressional District. The additional district sample was weighted to its proper proportion when combined with the statewide sample. Interviews were conducted by telephone July 16-17, 2001. The error due to sampling could be plus or minus four percentage points on results for the district sample and plus or minus five percentage points for statewide estimates.

Excerpt from page 9 of the above link:

Take the example of California. This state has the nation’s largest congressional delegation 53 seats but this year it will have only
one competitive race (in the 18th District). And that contest is occurring only because of Democratic state Rep. Dennis Cardoza’s primary defeat of disgraced seven-term Rep.Gary Condit, tarred by the investigation into the disappearance and murder of Chandra Levy.

Notice that the above excerpt doesn't mention Dunne. Rather, it states that Rep. Gary Condit was 'tarred' by the investigation into the disappearance and murder of Chandra Levy.

Skipper I do not know the name of the psychological twist that you are referring to....but it is an odd twist. It is odd as well you mention the sites Chandra visited on her computer and the national geographic having an article about the festival in Luray. The vision that I had of Chandra when I first saw her picture on TV, when the black sedan that Chandra is in, is going down a hill, from the top of the hill that they are driving down to enter a park, on the right are mountains, there are mountains that loom in the background many miles away, and oddly enough I recognized these to be the mountains of Luray, which I had seen in the movie "The Last of the Mohicans". Odd that these mountains would be in my vision, and weird enough that I recognized these to be this particular mountain range, especially since I knew nothing of where Chandra lived or anything about her whatsoever, in fact since the sound was off on the TV, and the poster of Chandra only said missing intern, I assumed she was a Canadian Doctor. We do not call apprentice in Government, interns, as this refers only to Doctors and dietitians, who do internships in hospitals.

A curious thing that the Condits keep saying about how long Chandra and Gary knew one another before Chandra went missing, Gary and kids keep saying 5 months, well we know that Chandra visited his office for the first time in October and Chandra went missing the end of April first of May...., this is 7 full months, it seems that at every chance the Condits try and minimize Chandra.

I have very strong suspicions that Condit knew Chandra before Chandra went to Washington, I believe that Chandra went to Washington at that particular time because she was having a relationship with Gary. We have Roirdon saying that Condit should tell all, how would Roirdon know that Chandra and Gary were having a relationship unless he knew this while Chandra was in Sacramento?! Surely Roirdon would not stick his neck out on a limb by saying such a remark that he had learned from second hand information, how did Roirdon know that Condit knew more than what he was saying?

Given that Cadee, Chad and Chandra are the same age, and similar interests in politics, and worked in the same building there is no way that they did not meet one another, as for example the first day of Chandra being there in Gray Davis office, someone would have given her the 10 cent tour, and then she would have meet Chad and Cadee. Perhaps, Chad and Cadee should step up to a lie detector test and Roirdon should be questioned as to what he knew of the relationship of Gary and Chandra. Gray Davis also seemed to know more than what he was saying in that he publically stated that Gary should be more forthcoming. Did Gray Davis introduce Chandra and Gary????!

What has always struck me as odd, if that Chandra made 28,000 a year at a paid internship, her parents which they admitted, paid her rent and phone. We have by the ommision of Linda Zamsky that Chandra did not purchase clothing or other things, the furniture and dishes and things in the apartment were provided by Edeline. Therefore, Chandra should have had a few bucks stashed away. So Chandra looses her internship, and we know that she wanted to stay, and she was vasillating about when she would be leaving the apartment, she told Edeline she had nothing to stay in washington for.....We know that Anne Marie Smith had found a hair in the bathroom and she was on to Condit about that there may be another woman, and they had sort of cooled the relationship because of this knowledge as well as Anne Marie Smith finding neckties on the four posts of the bed.

The point being Chandra wanted a Job with the FBI, Chandra wanted to stay in Washington for this reason, Chandra could afford to stay in Washington if she really wanted, also, I believe that Chandra's parents would not have denied her the monies to stay in Washington if she really wanted this. I believe as Crochett (Condit's first lawyer) stated that Chandra and Gary had broken up, this was also reported in the news, and it is alleged that Condit had an hour long conversation with a reporter (off record) shortly after Chandra went missing which is allegedly the original source of the information that Chandra and Gary had broken up.

We know that Chandra visited Gary April 24. We know that Anne Marie Smith arrived unannounced and uninvited the 25th of April and stayed until May 03rd. We know that Carolyn arrived the 27th of April. Condit had a one minute conversation with Chandra on the 29th, we know that Chandra called Zamsky on the 29th and advised that she had some big news. Skipper, I believe that Chandra and Gary had broken up, and that Gary called on the 29th with news of getting back together or a promise of a trip, whether this was to Luray or to France or to where ever, this was the reason that Chandra was hanging on in Washington, waiting to hear from Gary on the 2nd, after Carolyn left. That she and Gary would be making plans for a trip. We also have it from Zamsky that Condit had promised Chandra a trip to Palm Springs, and we have it from Anne Marie Smith that Gary promised her a trip to Palm Springs.

Chandra was hanging out in Washington waiting to hear from Gary and in hopes that she would get a job, although Chandra's mother gives no indication that Chandra was looking for a job, but rather site seeing during her last days in Washington, the last days of her life!

I think that the Grand Jury needs to investigate whether Condit and Chandra knew one another before Chandra came to Washington? I think that there are people who should be called before the grand jury to check out whether or not this is so. Chad and Cadee should be asked under oath if they had ever met Chandra before? Anne Marie Smith should be called before the grand jury to give information, such as she was at Condit's apt. passover weekend, her whereabouts from the 27th of April-May 03. Whether or not she called Condit's apt the 25th of April, when Chandra was presumably still at Gary's? Whether she saw Gary on the night of the 2nd of May or the day of the 3rd of May? Anne Marie should be asked under oath whether Gary contacted her on the 5th of May, as she made this error at least 5 times, stating that she had talked to Gary on the 5th of May?

Crochett (m.s.) should be called before the grand jury, as he stated that Gary and Chandra had broken up, had ended their relationship, since he already gave this information to the public, he would not be bound by client/lawyer confidentiality, he stated this he should have to clarify this comment.

Dunne's statements could not have been damaging to Condit, I hardly believe that the farmers of Modesto would even know who Dunne is, well barely, however, they knew about Condit's relationship with Anne Marie Smith and Joleen MacKay, as both women stated so, this is what did in Condit, not to mention Condit not giving a full account to the public regarding Chandra.

Yes it is an excellent idea to go back and look at the polls prior to Dunne's statement. The ratings of Condit were already in the HOLE, and Dunne did nothing to influence this, nor did any other media, only Condit's silence and bad manners and self absorption did this, and because of Condit's jujeune, as James would say.

I ran across a Gallup poll yesterday, but can't find it now, which was done in August 2001. It was 60% against Condit. I don't recall the questions asked or if it was even stated.

Hi, I am new to this forum and have some questions....

Whatever happened to the AMS lawsuit? She appeared daily on Fox News for quite a while and then the story just disappeared. I hope she's doing ok and is going to testify in the Dunne suit.

Regarding the Dunne suit...Isn't Dunne like 80 years old? I wonder if Wood brought the suit hoping that it would outlive Dunne himself, and he'd be able to collect from the estate?

Hi tm,

The AMS lawsuit to seat a grand jury in California was dismissed by the grand jury when they decided they didn't have jurisdiction for an allegedly active case under investigation in DC. Now that it is a cold case, they may have come to a different conclusion, I don't know.

It was a citizen's initiative to look into obstruction of justice, and in my opinion Stanislaus County should pursue this themselves.

Condit sued American Media (National Enquirer, Star, and Globe) and Dunne, as well as USA Today which was dismissed. I believe Dunne's age is irrelevant to picking him, they are basically looking for someone to shake down because Condit needs money.

Many people said worse, but Condit has focused on a narrow set of assertions regarding Middle East kidnappings to sue over, which happens to be Dunne and American Media. I believe the strategy is that he can sue over these statements without having to answer questions concerning Chandra, but the judge in Dunne's case ruled otherwise.

Condit called in sick instead and sent his kids out to try to bluff Dunne into settling without answering those questions. He has told too many lies to answer questions.

Thanks for the questions, and welcome.

Hi TM and welcome!

Peri, I doubt the truth will ever be known, but I have to agree with you about Luray.

I also agree that Chandra's news could have been about a vacation or a trip to the festival. The news must have come in on the weekend because if I'm remembering correctly- Chandra spoke to her landlord (Edeline) on Friday and she was kind of down. Sunday when she left the message for Linda, she was upbeat. I'd imagine the 'news' came from somewhere between Friday and Sunday. Because it was a weekend, it's doubtful that she heard from the FBI (or other employer) about a job.

Seems like Condit offered the same trips and presents to both Anne Marie and Chandra. Wouldn't it be great if we could learn more about what he gave Anne Marie?? That might be a clue as to other presents that Chandra received.

Too bad we can't communicate with her.

Blondie, I found a Gallup poll but I don't know if this is the one that you were talking about?

Poll: Condit media blitz falls short
August 27, 2001 Posted: 12:04 p.m. EDT (1604 GMT)

By Keating Holland
CNN Polling Director
WASHINGTON (CNN) - A new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll indicates that Rep. Gary Condit's media blitz hasn't had the sort of effect on the public that the congressman and his handlers might have intended.

Nationally, Condit's public relations campaign hurt him even more than it did in his home district in California (see CNN polling numbers from Condit's home district below).

Results of interviews of 814 adult Americans conducted between August 24 and August 26 indicate two-thirds of those who watched Condit's interview last Thursday night say his performance made them more suspicious of him, and 71 percent say they think he lied during the interview.

Three-quarters of all adults describe him as immoral; two-thirds say he is uncaring and 79 percent feel he is dishonest. More than six-in-ten believe it is likely that Condit was directly involved in Chandra Levy's disappearance; three quarters say it is likely he tried to obstruct the investigation.
