Condit was the primary suspect for months. It was only after he was positively ruled out that prosecutors began looking elsewhere.

He was not the primary suspect, was not ruled out at all in any way that you or I would recognize as being ruled out, and there was no need for a suspect for months because the police believed she ran away and was in hiding.

I document exactly what happened in Murder on a Horse Trail. Read it here on my website. I welcome diverse views, but statements that echo the less informed press and DC prosecutors are not helpful, they are merely an echo chamber.

Hi, Sigsky, Goz, Africa, Rd, and friends!
As far as plot twists go, there are many books out there with plots that are far, far less imaginative, in comparison to this "real life" story and its story within the story, within another story, within an even greater story, etc.!!! Whether the latest maneuverings of DC Justia are another piece of a "centralized narrative" seeking to squelch the massive publicity that would be associated with another Guandique trial during an election season, but this time likely starring Mr. C. as Rd infers, or whether the latest series of "Lifetime movie" events resulting in the dropping of charges against Ingmar Guandique are a result of the "DC is just an incestuous small town" effect, as Sigsky postulates, are both valid hypotheses, which we can debate and ruminate on. There is one redeeming outcome to both of these scenarios. . . The case against Guandique has been dismissed!!!

...and not unlikely, imo, that Chandra may also have a few guys, young and old, on the back burner.

That might seem not unlikely, but we have communications from Chandra to her aunt, her friends, and her parents that indicate she was like any other young woman in love, she was totally devoted to Condit. She spent most of her evenings hanging out at his condo even when he wasn't there. She messaged her aunt from there (because her aunt was only one who knew) and her Dupont Circle neighbors rarely saw her.

Now I hear TNT is going to be doing a miniseries based on the Higham/Horwitz series/book and presumably updated based on current events.

Without revisiting the series, my recollection is that it was mostly a recantation of what the press was publishing and didn't really qualify for what I would call investigative journalism.

Let's hope for a little more effort in this go although I am not optimistic.

And what do you make of Robert Levy's continued belief that Guandique was the guilty party? I can't imagine what it is like to be him.

I think the grief has made him unable to deal with the reality. It's called denial. I can't fault someone for the grief, but he's as bad as DC prosecutors. I saw something about him saying the woman tricked Morales into saying he made up the story about Guandique.

For that matter, he testified that Chandra could have gone to that park because the police said she did. I doubt he has a very good idea of what exactly it would take for Chandra to take up jogging that day and go on a death march on a horse trail in a remote forest.

Basically he doesn't care as long as someone tells him that the murderer is convicted.

There's grief, but then there's justice for Chandra, and that ain't it.

The evidence was always circumstantial and very filmsy. With that said, I think Guandique did it.

Chandra didn't jog, exercise outdoors, or even run on a treadmill in a gym. Chandra didn't place herself in a remote forest on top of the highest hill in DC for Guandique or anyone else to murder her. For that matter the jogging trails where there are joggers and Guandique made his assaults are half a mile down on Rock Creek from up there. At least the closest one was. The other one was a couple of miles on down Rock Creek. The point beng neither Chandra nor Guandique was up there.

I'm not sure where it came to pass that women's bodies dumped in a remote area turned them into joggers that day to explain how they got there.

Condit was pretty conclusively cleared.

He was not cleared at all. Honestly. There just isn't any clearing of him done. They did establish that he didn't splatter Chandra's blood in his condo while his wife was there. That was pretty stupid to even do, it was a showcase to say that he was "cleared".

Apparently pretty conclusively.

This article says, "He had pleaded guilty to attacking two other women in the park in a period close to Levy’s disappearance, and prosecutors argued that he was a predator who also attacked Levy." Does this overturning of the Levy conviction mean that those other two (apparent, implied) convictions are also negated and if so, why? Furthermore, why wouldn't there be a retrial, rather than a deportation if he was guilty of two other attacks? Based on what was written in the article, it seems to me that the father of Chandra Levy is correct to question the legitimacy of this new outcome.

I don't know about some of your conclusions there, but the answer is that he pled guilty to the two assaults and was sentenced and served 10 years. He was charged with Chandra's murder when his sentence was up and remained in prison.

The deportation is because he's an illegal immigrant and has served his sentence and the murder charges against Chandra dropped. (He of course passed a lie detector test about Chandra's murder back in the beginning when held on the assaults of the two joggers which proved to be inconvenient to DC prosecutors, so it got changed years later from passed to inconclusive. DC people can do whatever they want apparently.)

My vague memory recalls that Condit was a suspect mainly because no dead body was found at the park where Chandra Levy was out jogging . Once her body was found (a year later), Condit was cleared.

That is unbelievably vague. All the stuff you said about Condit, park, and finding her body clearing him is not even remotely true, and Chandra didn't jog, exercise outdoors, or even run on a treadmill in her gym.

The site is a remote forest on top of the tallest hill in DC, and her body was hidden halfway down the steep hill off a horse trail.

In English, that means her body was dumped there by the murderer.

The only other suspect is Gary Condit, not just because of the affair, but because of his little pre-murder drills wherein Chandra was programmed to allow herself to be picked up by total strangers, without a shred of identification on her, i.e., she had to leave her purse, keys, DL, everything behind, as she got into the back seat of a car, occupied by people she had never seen before.

I've never heard anyone make that claim before, and I've been reading claims since the beginning. Where did you get she was told to be picked up by strangers?

Wasn't there evidence, when her body was found, that she had been bound, gagged and tied to a tree alive?

There was no evidence or anything suggesting she was bound to a tree aliive. The DC prosecutors contended at some point in trial that Chandra was left alive bound up, apparently because Morales made up a story that Guandique said he didn't kill her.

In other words, Morales made up a story that the DC prosecutiors paid him to make up, then they made up a horrific story to shock their handpicked completely ignorant jury into returning a guilty verdict in time to get home for dinner.

Our tax dollars at work.

Condit needn't kill every romantic tryst gone sour.

Just FYI, not just a romantic tryst gone sour. Chandra threatened to confront his wife because Condit had told her they would get married someday, a "five year plan". He told her his wife was an invalid and fatally ill. She rarely came to DC.

And then she did come to DC, and Chandra disappeared. It was not just a tryst gone sour.

this may have confused... "Ingmar Guandique was convicted of first-degree murder for attacking Levy while she exercised in Washington's Rock Creek Park in May 2001."

oh certainly, this is a huge point I've been trying to get people to understand for 15 years now. There are reporters that get it right, very few, but the good ones, and the rest who just report what the DC prosecutors say, which is understandable. It's the DC prosecutors who promulgate this lie because the alternative is someone with a car who dumped her body there. That didn't fit their agenda. Neither did Guandique passing a lie detector test about Chandra's murder back in 2001.

They changed it years later to inconclusive to fit their agenda. All they needed then was an inmate who would play ball with them for witness protection plan, and they moved Guandique into a Kentucky prison into his cell briefly to complete the deal.

I analyze the reporting from the beginning, including the jogging thing, in Murder on a Horse Trail. Do a search, it's on my site to read. You will find the reporting on jogging interesting, especially given the initial police statements on finding her remains that correctly stated that this was far from any jogging trails, that Chandra wasn't wearing shoes for running, and that it looked like her body was dumped there.

When Chandra disappeared some reporters started reporting that "friends" said that Chandra frequently jogged in Rock Creek Park. Her actual friends, with names, said that jogging was not even a concept she entertained. This was reported. But "friends' without names kept getting reported that she jogged regularly in Rock Creek Park.

My belief is that Condit was the "friend" without a name who told police that she jogged in Rock Creek Park. Now you have to understand that he lived across the street from a Rock Creek Park trail in Adams Morgan section south of the zoo, about a mile and half below Klingle Mansion which is about another mile and half below the hill location where Chandra was hidden, the so called picnic area 18 at top of Glover Road coming up from Beach Drive - Broad Branch Road intersection. So for Condit, Chandra walking from metro stop there could very easily walk on that walk a bit to his condo and he wouldn't be totally lying. Not just totally made up like Morales, because the trail there is part of Rock Creek Park.

But of course if people were take it to mean running up on the major jogging trails, well, that would be the intent.

In any event, reporters were getting this info from someone who claimed to be a "friend" without a name, and Condit is only one that fits that bill. And it fit his agenda. Because of course he also said Chandra was obsessed and distraught because he wouldn't take her calls, and that basically is how the police treated her disappearance and discovery in Rock Creek Park.

Does anybody know more about the alleged 911 call?

The Public Defenders handling the appeal found out about the 911 call and used it as part of their argument for a retrial. They sought out the information on it, it was not a random 14 year later lady contacts Guandique's lawyers to say she heard a scream, etc., at least unless she read the news that Guandique's lawyers were investigating it and contacted them before they contacted her.

Do a search on Chapter The Scream in Murder on a Horse Trail where I cover all that was known about it.

Guandique is obviously not a nice guy, but the idea that he ended up in jail for 15 years based totally on the testimony of a jailhouse snitch who has a history of snitching looking for preferential treatment and the prosecution has:
- only a very small portion of the body
- no weapon,
- no forensics,
- no DNA
- no witnesses
- no scene
- no circumstantial evidence
is a very eye opening sequence of events

Your sentiments are right on, but it was 5 years for nothing but a ginned up kangaroo court conviction with nothing but a bribed "cellmate confession" story, bribed with out of prison into witness protection plan for best storyteller. DC prosecutors practically auditioned for best story moving Guandique around the country. The winner was from a short stay in a Kentucky federal prison cell with Morales.

The first 10 years was sentence served when he pled guilty to two assaults on joggers, knocking them down and thankfully they both fought him off and he ran away. Hopefully he will have learned some lessons for his return to El Salvador.
