Police say Clark Rockefeller kidnapped his daughter Reigh and may have taken her outside the country.


Clark Rockefeller, the man arrested for the alleged kidnapping of his daughter, is being questioned by investigators about a possible connection with the disappearance of a California couple.

Rockefeller's fingerprints connected him to a stock brokerage license application under yet another name -- Christopher Chichester. Reports indicate that name is on a list of wanted suspects in a California missing persons investigation.

Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arrived in Boston to question Rockefeller. Authorities named him a person of interest in the 1985 missing persons case of Jonathan and Linda Sohus.

Though human remains were found buried on their property nine years after their disappearance, cops never proved they belonged to either Jonathan or Linda.

The man known as Christopher Chichester lived in the Sohus guest home around the time of their disappearance, but left town before he could be questioned. He was reported to be a con man, and one who would appear in affluent neighborhoods to mingle in wealthy social circles. Cops are investigating if this is Rockefeller's true identity.

The mystery of a man calling himself Clark Rockefeller, who is accused of kidnapping his daughter and could have at least a dozen different aliases, may be solved now that a German man identified him as his long-lost brother in a photo.

Alexander Gerhartsreiter said that Rockefeller is his older brother, Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, when shown a photograph by a Boston Herald reporter visiting his house in Upper Bavaria.

"It seems you found my brother," Alexander Gerhartsreiter told the Herald. "It is really a shock."

He said Christian left home as a teenager and cut ties with the family about 20 years ago.

Police have been investigating whether Christian Gerhartsreiter, a German exchange student who lived with two Connecticut families, and Clark Rockefeller are one and the same.

Detectives allege Rockefeller is a con artist who has for decades been traveling across the United States, concocting different stories and using different aliases in order to live a lavish life.

LOS ANGELES — Investigators are conducting DNA tests on an unearthed skeleton and examining remnants of a blood stain that may be related to the case of a missing California couple in which a Massachusetts kidnapping suspect has been named a "person of interest."

The bones are thought to belong to Jonathan Sohus, who with his wife Linda disappeared in 1985 when a man now known as Clark Rockefeller was a tenant in their family's San Marino guesthouse. The bloodstain was found in the guesthouse soon after the bones were unearthed

TODAY" host Natalie Morales has scored the first sit-down interview with the phony Rockefeller who sparked an international manhunt after being accused of snatching his daughter, 7-year-old daughter Reigh "Snooks" Boss.

The jailhouse interview between Morales and "Clark Rockefeller" was conducted yesterday at Suffolk County Jail at Nashua Street in Boston. It is slated to air next Monday and Tuesday on "Today." The interview will also be part of a larger "Rockefeller" "Dateline" edition planned for September.

BOSTON — The man who calls himself Clark Rockefeller and is accused of kidnapping his young daughter says he spent "six glorious and wonderful days" with the girl while evading authorities, but he still isn't talking about his life before 1993.

Police say Rockefeller is really a German immigrant named Christian Gerhartsreiter. California authorities want to question him about a couple who disappeared in 1985.

Gerhartsreiter has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping his daughter, Reigh Boss, on a Boston street during a supervised visit in July after losing custody of her to his ex-wife, Sandra Boss.

In a jail interview with The Boston Globe, Gerhartsreiter said he decided to take Reigh the day before the supervised visit, but police say he spent months planning the alleged kidnapping. He was captured in early August in Baltimore, where police said was hoping to start a new life.

Representatives of the Rockefeller family say Gerhartsreiter is not related to the descendants of John D. Rockefeller. He said his Rockefeller name was given to him by a man named Harry Copeland, who he described as his godfather from New York who died in the late 1990s.

Hrones deflected any questions about Gerhartsreiter's life before 1993, including the time authorities say he spent renting a guesthouse in San Marino, a wealthy Los Angeles suburb.

California authorities want to question Gerhartsreiter about the 1985 disappearance of newlyweds Jonathan and Linda Sohus. The guesthouse was owned by the mother of Jonathan Sohus.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- A German citizen who calls himself Clark Rockefeller pleaded not guilty Monday to charges related to the kidnapping of his 7-year-old daughter off a Boston street in July.


Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who calls himself Clark Rockefeller, is accused of kidnapping his young daughter.

Magistrate Gary Wilson set bail at a sum befitting a true Rockefeller -- $50 million.

Investigators say "Rockefeller" is really Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who has been living under fake identities since coming to the United States in 1978. He also has been identified as a "person of interest" in the 1985 disappearance of a California couple.

Gerhartsreiter pleaded not guilty in Suffolk Superior Court to charges he grabbed his daughter, Reigh, during a supervised visit, shoving away a court-appointed social worker, then fleeing in a hired car. He also was charged with lying to police about his identity.

The man and daughter were found August 2 at a home in Baltimore. The girl has since returned to England, where she lives with her mother.

Jeffrey Denner, the attorney for the man authorities say is really Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, told the Boston Globe Friday that federal immigration officials have filed legal papers seeking to turn him over for possible deportation if he is convicted of kidnapping. Removal would take place after any possible sentence.

About 14 minutes into the interrogation, an FBI agent told him it's a crime to lie to a federal law enforcement agent.

"In that case, I better not say anything because I don't want to be accused of lying later," he said.

After the FBI agent tells him she hopes he wouldn't lie to her, he says, "I don't want to be accused of lying."

The interview then ends and doesn't start up again for almost another hour, due to technical difficulties with the recording equipment, prosecutors said.

But when the interview resumes, Gerhartsreiter continues to answer questions.

His lawyer, Jeffrey Denner, asked a judge to suppress everything he said after he expressed his concern about being accused of lying, arguing that he invoked his right to remain silent.

"Mr. Rockefeller very clearly, unambiguously expressed his desire not to speak anymore," Denner said.

But prosecutors argued that Gerhartsreiter did not make it clear he was unwilling to continue the interview, and spoke to them for several more hours during the interrogation at the FBI's offices in Baltimore.

"Everything about this interview suggests that he was willing to speak to police from the outset," said Assistant District Attorney David Deakin.

Judge Frank Gaziano did not indicate when he would rule on the request. Gerhartsreiter, 48, is scheduled to stand trial next month on charges of parental kidnapping, two assault charges and giving a false name to police.

BOSTON — An impostor who passed himself off as a Rockefeller in America for 15 years is to plead insanity at his trial, accused of snatching his London-based daughter.

German-born Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, 48, calls himself Clark Rockefeller — and wants to use that name at his two-week trial in Boston.

He is charged with kidnapping his seven-year-old daughter Reigh, nicknamed "Snooks," during a supervised visit in Boston in July and holding her for six days until he was caught in Baltimore after an international hunt.

[The trial began Tuesday morning with jury selection, according to The Associated Press. Eleven of the 16 jurors needed were chosen from a pool of 120. Judge Frank Gaziano said selection would continue Wednesday with a new pool of potential jurors.

Before jury selection began, Gaziano ruled the defense can use the Rockefeller name during the trial, while prosecutors can call him Gerhartsreiter, the AP reported. The judge said he would call him "the defendant."

His defense lawyers had argued that he should be addressed only as Clark Rockefeller because that is the name he has used for more than 15 years and that is the name he was sought under by police when his daughter disappeared.

They also argued it would be unfair to call him Gerhartsreiter because he has been charged with, but not convicted of, providing a false name to police.

Many of the jurors who were picked Tuesday told Gaziano they hadn't read or heard anything about the case, which has received extensive media coverage because of his use of the famous Rockefeller name, according to the AP.

Others said they had read about the case, but not formed an opinion about his guilt or innocence and could remain impartial.

Some bluntly told the judge they had followed media reports about the case and already had an opinion, the AP reported.
