Search on for Woman Who Disappeared From Nevada Home
Monday, January 21, 2008

<snip>
RENO, Nev. — A 19-year-old college student mysteriously vanished from a Reno, Nev., home early Sunday morning, and cops fear she may have been kidnapped.

Brianna Denison, a student at Santa Barbara City College who is from Reno, was staying with friends near the University of Nevada, Reno. She was last seen at about 4 a.m. Sunday, when she returned home from a party and went to sleep on the couch wearing sweat pants and a T-shirt.

"We're treating this as an abduction case right now," Lt. Robert McDonald of the Reno Police Department told FOX News. "A small amount of blood on her pillow is of interest to us."

A large teddy bear is missing with Brianna which seems rather strange. LE is looking at her boyfriend too.
The link I read is no longer working.

This is from AMW:

"Lt. Robert McDonald of the Reno Police Dept. tells AMW that police are also studying a small amount of blood that was left on Brianna's pillow. However, McDonald stressed that there were no signs of forced entry and no signs of a struggle in the home. Brianna left behind her ID, wallet, cell phone, and may not be wearing shoes. Also missing is a stuffed 2-foot-tall teddy bear"

Brianna Denison

Where Is Brianna Denison?

A surveillance still of the SUV driven by male "person-of-interest" who dropped off one of Brianna's friends at the same house where Brianna was last seen.

Authorities tell AMW that Brianna Denison returned to her hometown of Reno, Nev. after attending college in California. On Jan. 19, 2008, she joined some friends at a Reno area 'SWAT' party. SWAT parties cater to young adults seeking out travel destinations involving snowboarding, skiing, surfing, and other action sports. From there, she and a friend went to the Sands Regency Hotel Casino.

After leaving the casino, police say Brianna returned to a friend's home at 1395 MacKay Court at around 4 a.m., and was reportedly last seen falling asleep on a couch. The residence is in an area close to the University of Nevada, and is populated mostly by college students living off-campus.

Earlier that night, a friend who was also staying at the MacKay Court residence solicited a ride from an unknown male. The girl arrived home safe and sound and police say that the journey was without incident. However, investigators believe that the driver of the vehicle may have critical information. He is described as a white or Latin male, about 45-years-old, medium build and well-dressed. Police were able to get surveillance video of the man's vehicle leaving the Sands casino where he picked up Brianna's friend. A Reno Police Department press release states that the vehicle looks to be a beige or light brown Chevrolet or GMC Suburban. At this time, authorities are treating the driver of the SUV as a "person-of-interest."

Lt. Also missing is a stuffed 2-foot-tall teddy bear that Brianna had fallen asleep with. Police believe that she left the home wearing light blue or pink sweat pants and a white tank top. Brianna is described as 5', 98 lbs., with long dark brown hair and blue eyes.

If you have any information about the whereabouts of Brianna Denison, the unknown "person-of-interest", or his vehicle, please call 1-800-CRIME-TV.

The FBI and investigators from the Center for National and Exploited Children have now joined the search for Brianna.

The person of interest that LE was concentrating on as a suspect has been cleared of any wrongdoing and actually turned himself into police to be questioned.

LE are checking out all Sex Offenders in the area.

Investigators were looking into the possibility that Denison's disappearance is related to attacks against two female students at the University of Nevada, Reno, late last year.

Both women were grabbed from behind and sexually assaulted in the early morning hours in November and December. No arrests have been made.

Tonight on Greta they discussed how Brianna left behind her
cell phone and wallet.

The dogs did not pick up any scent of her around the area.

I did not catch anymore of the segment on Brianna.

I really wish this story would have a happy ending. What another pretty young woman we have missing again.

This afternoon I heard on CNN they had no leads in this case. What a shame!

The family has hired two private investigators to help them locate Brianna.

The family is also consulting psychics in their search for Brianna. I wish them the best in any method they choose to find their family member.

The family is also offering a large reward. When I locate the amount, I will print the important infor. regarding the reward.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, LE are questioning sex offenders in this case which is most likely standard procedure when any young person goes missing.

Police Question Sex Offenders in Case of Missing Reno Coed
Thursday, January 24, 2008

Brianna Denison
RENO, Nev. — Police searching for a missing college student said Thursday they plan to interview about 100 registered sex offenders who live within a mile of the home where she vanished five days ago.

<snip>
All of the more than 1,700 registered sex offenders in Washoe County around Reno will be contacted as part of the investigation, he added.

Police also continue to investigate two attacks on UNR female students late last year in an effort to determine whether there's a link between them and Denison's disappearance. The previous cases, involving an abduction and rape in December and a fondling in November, also occurred near the campus.

"At this time the other two cases do not appear to be related to her disappearance," Frady said. "However, we're not ruling out that possibility."

Sex Offenders
I can't believe the number of sex offenders we have out there in some areas. I think we should be giving them longer sentences just due to the volume that seem to be living in the community. It has to be due to the fact they were let out of overcrowded prisons. It seems like they have been let out of prisons early and they should be monitored closely.

Now that LE has matching DNA to another victim, they can narrow in on a suspect. This does not look good for our student Brianna though. She has been missing for awhile now. It seems a Sexual Offender may be on the loose in Nevada now. We know of two victims to date, I wonder how many more there will be?

Cops Link Missing Nevada Student and Earlier Sex Assault

Sunday, January 27, 2008

RENO, Nev. — Police said Sunday a positive DNA link has been established between the Jan. 20 abduction of a college student from a Reno home and a December sexual assault of another student who lived a few blocks away.

At a late afternoon news conference, Reno police commander Ron Holladay said investigators think the same unidentified white male in his 30s is responsible for the earlier assault and last week's kidnapping of Brianna Denison, 19, from a friend's house near the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

"Our chances of capturing the suspect are exponentially increased now because of the DNA," Holladay said. "He probably lives in the area. It's still my hope that Brianna is alive, and we're expending every resource possible to get her back safely."

Holladay said the match between DNA samples obtained from the scenes of Denison's disappearance and the earlier assault allowed investigators to make a major breakthrough in the case.

He said the victim of the earlier case was interviewed again after the match was made and a more detailed description of the suspect was developed.

That victim, a UNR student, was kidnapped outside her home on Dec. 16 and sexually assaulted. She also was the victim of a Jan. 19 attempted burglary at her home that may be connected to the same suspect, Holladay said.

Snip from story:

AMW Learns Exclusive Details About Prior Assault

19-year-old Brianna Denison has been missing since January 20, 2008.

Authorities in Reno, Nev. have established a positive link between the disappearance of 19-year-old Brianna Denison and the December sexual assault of a college student. Cops say DNA evidence found on Brianna's pillow matches DNA gathered after a Dec. 16 attack on a University of Nevada-Reno student who lived only a few blocks away from the home where Brianna was last seen.

AMW has now learned exclusive information about the woman involved in the prior attack. A source close to the investigation tells AMW that the assailant told the victim, a foreign student from Taiwan, that, "If you tell the police, I will kill you." Authorities say the 22-year-old was abducted outside her home on Dec. 16 when an unknown assailant grabbed her after she parked her car on the 1400 block of Terrace Drive.

According to police, the assailant grabbed the female from behind, forced her to the ground and attempted to choke her with her right arm. He then placed his right hand over her nose and mouth which caused her to pass out. When she began to regain consciousness, the suspect forced her into the front passenger seat. The suspect drove to a location 3 to 4 minutes away where he forced her to perform sexual acts. After the attack, he drove her back to her residence where he dumped her off and threatened "he might be back."

Police believe that the December attack is linked to an attempted burglary at the same residence on Jan. 19, 2008, the day before Brianna Denison went missing. Authorities say that in the January incident, someone attempted to enter the victim's home by breaking off a door knob at the rear of the residence.

Commander Ron Holladay of the Reno Police Department said the victim of the earlier attack was interviewed again after the DNA match was made and that a more detailed description of the suspect was developed.

Police have now released extensive clues about the attacker. He is described as a white male, 28 to 40 years old, long face with a square chin, around 5'6", brown hair, and physically strong, but not muscular. He has a belly that is not excessively large but firm, an "innie" belly button, and a shaved pubic region. He also has a light covering of hair on his arms and facial hair about a quarter to half an inch long that was soft. The assailant spoke with no regional accent and did not smell of alcohol, smoke, or cologne.

At the time of the Dec. 16 attack, cops say he wore a red short-sleeve shirt, with a medium-blue colored neckline. The shirt was a silk/rayon/polyester blend and may have had an embroidered word on the upper left breast area. He wore a long-sleeved shirt underneath. He also wore pants that reminded the victim of basketball pants made of smooth material with an elastic waistband with no zipper.

Cops say that despite having her face covered with her hooded sweatshirt, the victim was also able to provide details about the attacker's vehicle. It is described as an extended cab pick-up truck or SUV with a dome above the windshield and an automatic transmission. The vehicle is tall enough that it requires a step to gain entry. The victim also noticed a floor-mounted console that opened in the front, that the radio had a blue and red LED read out, and that the seats were cloth. She also claimed that there was a baby shoe on the front seat floor board.

Police tell AMW that the assailant's DNA has not yielded any hits in any databases and he is not a registered sex offender. Furthermore, authorities say that the attacker may not have a violent criminal history and his behavior could be a surprise to those closest to him.

Police say that the Nov. 13 fondling of another UNR student in the same neighborhood can be linked by motive and circumstance to the Dec. 16 sexual assault and Brianna's disappearance. In the Nov. 13 incident, a 21-year-old UNR student was walking through an apartment parking lot at 401 College Drive, when an unknown male assailant approached her from behind and put her in a chokehold. The suspect dragged the victim between cars, pushed her to the ground and groped her. As she fought and yelled, he told he not to scream. The victim continued to scream and started kicking her attacker. The assault stopped after the suspect kicked the victim in the head and arm and ran away.

Authorities say that since the attacks occurred in a close proximity to one another and during similar times of day, the attacker may be someone who frequents, lives or works in the area.

Police plan to search for Denison around Reno, including along the Truckee River and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Denison's family said they're still holding out hope she'll be found alive. Lauren Denison, Brianna's aunt, told AMW that "our rallying cry is, if the abductor sees this, open your heart and give her back to us. We want this god-awful person to be aware that he is not only putting a great deal of hurt on Brianna, her family, and friends, but also the people who know him. Please just give her back and run off if you need to. Bring Brianna back to us."

Last week, a police dog was unable to help detectives and a search of the neighborhood turned up nothing.

A Denison photo has been featured on casino marquees, fliers and businesses around town. UNR officials have given presentations on personal safety to students since Denison's disappearance. Hundreds of volunteers continue to search the surrounding areas.

Comments: I am a bit behind on some of the past links. I think there is a picture of the suspect out. I will do some searching.

A lack of promising leads in the Brianna Denison case is causing Reno Police to resort to some unusual methods.

Officers are patrolling several neighborhoods near the home where Brianna Denison was kidnapped and they're stopping anyone who resembles the suspect in her disappearance.

So far, most people have been cooperative, but some say the police might be going too far.

"I have mixed feelings about it," says Justin Boucher, a UNR junior. "Because stopping someone on appearance is profiling, that's the definition of profiling...so i don't know if they should be doing that or not."

Reno Police are routinely making stops in Northwest Reno, hoping it will lead them to Briana Denison's abductor.

Authorities are pulling people over; taking pictures; and DNA samples if the person is compliant.

Students say these are sacrafices people should be willing to make to help solve the case.

"I guess you have your freedom of speech and all of that," says Travis Pyne, a UNR senior. "But it's eventually a good thing for her so i don't think it's a big deal."

"At this point, I think everyone should be willing," says Kandace Byrns, a UNR sophomore. "They wanna find this guy and if they're willing to help then, that'll get us one step closer to finding him."

Police say they've been going door-to-door in for about a week-and-a-half and questioning hundreds of people.

One lieutenant says it's a matter of gathering key information on a voluntary basis.
<snip>

Where is Brianna? I hope they find her or the body. She has been gone for awhile now. At least LE is doing the search on a voluntary basis as not to step on anyone's rights. I assume many would not want to give their DNA if asked, that is just my opinion even if they have nothing to hide.

RENO, Nev. — Reno police released a composite sketch of a suspected rapist linked to a sexual assault in the area where a 19-year-old college student disappeared.

The sketch is "not inconsistent" with suspect descriptions in three other sexual assault cases near the University of Nevada, Reno campus, investigators say.

County: Help us in hunt for DNA

DAVID B. PARKER / RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL
Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley speaks at news conference on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 seeking help from the public to help fund the testing of almost 3000 DNA samples taken from convicted offenders. The hope is that evidence in the samples might help solve the Brianna Denison abduction, along with other unsolved cases.

Washoe County authorities are appealing to the private sector for $150,000 to allow a backlog of roughly 3,000 DNA samples from convicted offenders to be processed and compared with the DNA of the unknown suspect who abducted Brianna Denison and, weeks earlier, assaulted at least two other college students.

Sheriff Mike Haley said at a Monday news conference that a new law that took effect in October requires DNA be taken and processed from all convicted felons and those convicted of gross misdemeanor sex crimes. But the state provided no money for the extra work, he said.

It's possible, he said, that one of those samples could lead investigators to whoever abducted Denison on Jan. 20 and also who killed a retired couple in the exclusive Montreux area in March 2006.

"This community has come together in so many ways, like they were looking for their own daughter," Haley said. "The Brianna case has emerged as everyone's daughter. We need to find a way to solve this case.

"Sometimes, when a government can't solve a problem, a community can."

Beyond the Denison and Montreux cases, though, there is a potential that a number of unsolved cases in the county ranging from murders to robberies and sexual assaults could be solved, Haley said, if the backlog was eliminated.

He said if $150,000 can be raised, the Las Vegas Metro Police Department Crime Lab and the Bode Technology Group in Virginia have promised a one-month turnaround to process the samples. Tax-deductible donations can be made to the crime lab or sheriff's office.

A female body was found in Reno in a brush covered field in a light industrial area on the south side. They are doing an autopsy to identify her.

We have too much crime and we won't spend the money to identify these criminals with DNA and put them away for good. I guess lots and lots more people have to die before people start demanding action be taken before they die too.

Not a real comforting thought, but the truth such as it is.

Female Body Found in Reno; Police Won't Speculate on Whether It Is Missing College Student
Associated Press
February 15, 2008

RENO, Nev. — Police cordoned off a field where the body of a woman was found Friday but declined to speculate whether the body was that of missing 19-year-old college student Brianna Denison.

The body was found about noon in the brush-covered field on the city's south side near a light industrial area, Reno police spokesman Steve Frady said.

About 45 law enforcement and crime lab personnel, including an FBI agent, were at the scene, which covers about two acres, he said.

Frady said the time and cause of death would be determined by an autopsy. Authorities have "no ID, not even a tentative ID," he said.

"I'm not going to speculate because we don't know who the person is," Frady said.

"We're processing this as a crime scene. We do that with death investigations," he told The Associated Press. "They are gathering information and evidence and photographing the area."

"We don't know how long the body has been out there. It's definitely a female. We don't know the age," he said.
