Mountain Bike Appears To Be Camille's

(KUTV) PROVO - The mountain bike stolen by two people in Provo Canyon appears to belong to Camille Cleverley -- a student at Brigham Young University who disappeared on Aug. 30.

Authorities said Saturday that a key found inside Cleverley's apartment unlocked a lock that was attached to the Schwinn bike. Investigators didn't actually make the declaration, but because the key opened the lock and Camille's bicycle is so unique, there is little chance of it belonging to anyone else.

Those who discovered -- and took Camille's bike from the Bridal Veil Falls area of the canyon said Saturday that they did so because it looked broken down and abandoned.

Benjamin Marks, 19, told the Salt Lake Tribune on Saturday that he was in the Bridal Veil Falls area of Provo Canyon with his friend when they saw the bike. But they say it was locked to a bike rack and both tires were flat. Marks also said the brakes didn't work well.

"We were calling out, 'Hello? Is anyone else out here?" Marks told the Tribune. "No one would answer so it was like, 'Hey, it's no one's bike."

Marks said he figured that no one was rock climbing at that hour -- 1:00 a.m. on Sept. 2, two days after Cleverley's disappearance -- and that the bike was abandoned.

Marks told the Tribune that he took the bike back to his garage, where he wanted to remove parts to fix up his own bike. Saying that he is not much of a news-watcher, Marks turned on the television days later and realized that he may have taken Cleverley's bike.

"I didn't know what to do or say," he said. "I just knew it was her bike."

However, officials have not been able to conclusively identify the bike as belonging to Camille. No papers from her apartment provide the bike's serial number, making the match difficult. Authorities are now hoping that the bike's manufacturer, Schwinn, can provide a list of bikes that were sent to Provo area stores, the Tribune reported.

Meanwhile Saturday, the search for Cleverley stagnated with no new leads or clues-- now, more than a week after she disappeared. Earlier, authorities said that her boyfriend, David Sperry, voluntarily took a polygraph test administered by the FBI -- and passed.

However, more searchers than ever turned out to look for the 22-year-old BYU senior, who was last seen riding her mountain bike near the university's campus on Aug. 30. Among them, included the fathers of Garrett Bardsley and Brennan Hawkins. Bardsley disappeared in the Uinta Mountains in 2004 and was never found. Hawkins also spent several days alone in the Uinta Mountains in Aug. 2005 before searchers found him.

Bardsley and Hawkins are two of several notable searchers aiding authorities. Ed Smart, father of abductee Elizabeth Smart, has been helping in the search this week as has Bob Smither -- a Texas man whose daughter was abducted and killed in 1997.

But despite all of the high profile help -- and the discovery of Camille's mountain bike in Provo Canyon -- the massive search has not yielded any new information in days.

Authorities believe Cleverley, who enjoyed riding her bike in the rugged areas around Provo, may have parked it and hiked one of the many trails leading into the Wasatch Mountains.

Cleverley's roommate claims that she returned to their apartment on Friday, Aug. 31, where she noticed a handwritten note that had been pinned to the door from Camille's boyfriend. In it, Sperry said that he visited the home several times, but got no answer at the door. The note asked Camille to call him when she returned home.

CAMILLE CLEVERLEY

Camille Cleverley, 22, was preparing to start the school year at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT when she disappeared on August 30, 2007.

Even though no one has seen Camille since the 30th, her bank card was used the next day to buy doughnuts and energy drinks.

By all accounts, Camille Cleverley has always been a responsible young woman and a good student. No one in her family thinks 5′5″, 110 lb. blue-eyed blond would leave with only her purple and silver Schwinn for transportation.

Camille was dating a man named David Sperry, and there hasn’t been any suspicion expressed in the traditional media towards Mr. Sperry. He’s appeared on NBC’s Today and his behavior seemed appropriate. Sperry seemed as worried as Camille’s relatives, just as any boyfriend would be. There is, however, a message board discussion taking place here that contains some interesting statements about Mr. Sperry.

It’s a message board. I read many message boards, and often enjoy posting to them, but… it’s a message board attached to the web site for TV station KSL in Salt Lake City. Take anything posted there with a full shaker of salt.

A MySpace has been set up by Camille’s friends and family:

Stolen Bike May Belong To Missing BYU Student
Authorities in Utah are searching mountain trails and the Provo River looking for missing Brigham Young University student, Camille Cleverley, after a couple came forward saying that they took a bike that may have belonged to the 22-year-old. The bike was turned in by two people who admitted they had snatched it on September 1, 2007, after finding it locked to a rack at Bridal Veil Falls along the Provo River. Cops have not positively verified if the bike is indeed Camille's and continue their search in the rugged areas around Provo in hopes of locating the BYU senior. >>The Full Story

goz, I think the key here is that Camille's debit card was used the next day at a convenience store, I believe not far from her apartment. It is believed a young woman made the purchase.

The boyfriend doesn't think it's like Camille to purchase doughnuts. Also, I haven't heard of the debit card being used since then.

But I think it rules out some kind of accidental death while hiking. They have even closed up a dam to lower the water level in that area to search the river for her, but found nothing.

If she is found out there, it wasn't by accident that she never came home.

For a young woman to be using her debit card the next day would require either herself to be in hiding or a woman or couple to have kidnapped or murdered her. It rules out some sex predator acting alone in attacking her.

We've seen Elizabeth Smart abducted and come home safe [see Elizabeth Smart found!], and we've seen Lori Hacking end up in a landfill at her husband's hands in this area [see Missing in Utah Monday]. With another young woman involved, or herself, still alive the next day and using her debit card, I hope it turns out as it did with Elizabeth Smart.

Unfortunately, Camille was found in that wilderness.

Some young woman, the woman who used Camille's debit card the next day, knows who gave her that debit card. She needs to go to the police. Surely she does not want to be an accomplice to murder.

Report: Body of Missing BYU Student Found in Canyon
Associated Press
September 09, 2007

PROVO, Utah — A woman's body believed to be missing Brigham Young University student Camille Cleverley was found Sunday, authorities said.

The body was found in Provo Canyon, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Spencer Cannon. Authorities were trying to confirm the woman's identity, but Cannon said investigators believed it was Cleverley, a 22-year-old senior from Boise, Idaho.

Cleverley was last seen Aug. 30, and her mountain bike also was gone. Authorities had been searching mountain trails and the Provo River for her, believing she may have parked her bike and hiked one of the many trails leading into the Wasatch Mountains.

Her bike was turned in by two people who admitted they had snatched it after finding it locked to a rack at Bridal Veil Falls along the Provo River, officials have said. The area is popular for hiking, but can also be treacherous with sheer drop-offs of hundreds of feet.

Cleverly's debit card was used the day after she vanished to buy doughnuts and fruit drinks at a Provo store. Police have said the buyer was a young woman but they couldn't confirm it was Cleverley.

How terribly sad - I was hoping for good news from this story.

Blessings for the family.

I think I read it was a fall yet there appears to be no clear answer. Do you know RD?

I'd really like to know more about the person who used the credit card and if there was foul play involved.

She was found at the base of a 200 foot cliff. That rules out someone "finding" her debit card and leaving her body laying there.

Maybe there was some mistake and that isn't her debit card or something, but unless there's a mistake, Camille was murdered by being thrown off a 200 foot cliff.

And a young woman either did it or knows who did it.

Body identified as missing student
BYU student appears to have fallen to her death in canyon
September 9, 2007

PROVO, Utah - The body of a Brigham Young University student missing for more than a week was found in a canyon Sunday, authorities said, and investigators were trying to determine how she fell to her death.

The body of Camille Cleverley, 22, was found at the base of a 200-foot cliff east of Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon, said Utah County Sheriff James O. Tracy.

Cleverley’s father, Joel, identified her at the scene, Tracy said, and it appeared that she had been dead for several days. The Utah medical examiner’s office took the body from the canyon Sunday evening.
