No breaks in missing woman case
STORY TOOLS

By Burt Hubbard, Rocky Mountain News
July 5, 2007
Frank Birgfeld spent the Fourth of July driving and walking the streets of Grand Junction, passing out fliers describing the disappearance of his 34-year- old daughter, Paige.
He was hoping for a lucky break.

Maybe someone saw her red 2005 Ford Focus driven by someone they knew, he said. Or maybe they'd seen a blond woman resembling Paige with a stranger who looked out of place.

"I ask them to think and, if they do think of something, to call it in," said Birgfeld, who lives in Centennial. "What you're trying to do is not let (the attention on the case) die. You're trying to keep it alive."

Wednesday marked a week since Paige Birgfeld, a mother of three young children, went missing. She was last seen around 9 p.m. June 28 and was officially reported missing on Saturday.

Her car was found in flames Sunday in a business parking lot in northwest Grand Junction.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that it had no new leads on her disappearance but was continuing the search.

A bloodhound has sniffed around both the missing woman's home and car, while deputies have combed around both areas, the sheriff's office said.

A statement from the sheriff's office said Birgfeld's ex-husband, Robert Dixon, who was out of state last week, had spoken to investigators Tuesday and was cooperative.

Frank Birgfeld was joined Wednesday by a group of Paige Birgfeld's friends as they spread out through Grand Junction with the fliers.

He concentrated his efforts within a five-mile radius of his daughter's home. Her car was found three miles from her house.

Frank Birgfeld said he figures the perpetrator wouldn't drive the car far for fear it would be stopped.

While he said he holds out hope that his daughter is alive, he does occasionally look in the bushes as he walks.

"Looking in the brush is kind of an admission of defeat," he said. "But at the same time, you do it so you can say I did walk around there and didn't see anything."

Comments: I read she worked for an escort service and also had an ex-husband who may have been angry with her. I have a few more articles to post. Will confirm on a later date. If anyone has any information, please keep us updated. Too many women are going missing lately.

Dad: Escort job may be tied to woman's disappearance

Paige Birgfeld, 34, hasn't been seen since June 28.

By Julie Poppen and Ellen Miller, Rocky Mountain News
July 3, 2007
GRAND JUNCTION — A missing Mesa County mother whose car was found torched a few miles from her upscale home may have been working as a model or escort at the time of her disappearance, her father said today.
Frank Birgfeld now worries that one of his daughter's many entrepreneurial jobs may be at the root of her mysterious disappearance.

Paige Birgfeld, 34, was last seen about 9 p.m. Thursday and was officially reported missing Saturday. She was wearing a blue-flowered tube top and blue jean shorts.

Her red 2005 Ford Focus was found engulfed in flames Sunday night in a parking lot of an industrial area in northwest Grand Junction, about 3 miles from her 14-room home near the city.

Birgfeld, of Centennial, said he saw a business card with his daughter's name on it indicating she was involved in modeling and possibly more.

"I did not know what that is," said Birgfeld, former vice president and district director of the National Association of Securities Dealers. "As a dad, I don't know that I like the sound of it. It is an area that is ripe for speculation."

His daughter also sold baby carriers, had a dance company called Brain Dance and was an independent sales director for The Pampered Chef, an Illinois-based company that allows people to sell kitchen gadgetry from their homes.

"I got a hunch this wasn't because she had an irate Pampered Chef customer," said Birgfeld, who was busy plastering the Grand Junction area with fliers Tuesday.

But that isn't the only line of speculation in connection with his daughter's disappearance.

Another is that she willingly left. But her father rules that one out right away. He described his daughter as "an absolutely devoted mother" who would never leave her children.

"When you hear 'missing person' there is always the idea that maybe they just found their circumstances untenable and left," he said. "That is not the case here. Once you remove that, the rest of the scenarios get bad."

Authorities, meanwhile, are being strategically tight-lipped about the case.

"I don't know of any specific evidence that says there was foul play involved," said Lt. Jim Fogg, of the Mesa County Sheriff's Department. "We're definitely treating it as a very serious missing persons case."

Recent Web postings by Birgfeld hint at other scenarios.

For instance, Birgfeld told friends 2 1/2 months ago that she had recently hooked up again with her first husband. Web posts on a Pampered Chef forum indicated that she was worried what her second ex-husband, Rob Dixon, might think.

"He and I didn't have any kids, they are all from my second husband, who won't like hearing about me having anything to do with the first husband again," she wrote under her former name of Paige Dixon on April 18.

Other posts told of Birgfeld's tempestuous relationship with Dixon, and talked of fears for her safety.

Dixon's attorney, Scott Robinson, said he was familiar with her worrisome writings on the Web site.

"Either she is the victim of foul play or she has staged her own disappearance and left behind evidence to implicate Rob," Robinson said. "Rob is still hoping that the latter is true."

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel found Pampered Chef posts from March 24 in which Birgfeld wrote, "Oh, man! My children would ask me if Dad was going to kill me. I can't imagine what they were thinking life would be like after he killed me."

"Thank God he is far, far away! I would gladly sacrifice every penny of child support if he would stay away!"

The paper also reported that on June 17, Birgfeld wrote about Dixon's plans to return to Colorado.

Robinson confirmed that Dixon was planning to return to Colorado after living in Philadelphia for the past year and that he had gotten a new job as an EMT. Robinson said Dixon is here now and fully cooperating with investigators.

Dixon was not in Colorado last week and only learned of his ex-wife's disappearance on Sunday, Robinson said. The two divorced last year.

Court records show that in October 2005, Dixon accused his wife of giving topless massages and slapped her on the shoulder and punched her in the throat as she held their baby.

Dixon was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault and misdemeanor child abuse. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of harassment. The case against him was dismissed last month after he completed terms of a year-long deferred sentence, Robinson said.

Additionally, in October 2004, the Grand Junction Sentinel reported that authorities were called to the family's $909,000 home after Birgfeld reported that her husband threatened her and the children.

Police determined Dixon was not a threat to himself or anyone else and he was not arrested.

Robinson said Dixon has stayed out of trouble for the past year and has an amicable relationship with Birgfeld. She and Dixon have three children, ages 8, 6 and 3. She has sole custody, according to her Web posts.

"They've basically joined forces to make sure things are going well with the kids," Robinson said.

Dixon is a controversial figure in Grand Junction.

He was once on the board of the Grand Junction Rural Fire Protection District. In that role, he recommended investing fire district funds in a New York Internet company in which he had once owned stock, the Grand Junction Sentinel reported.

Once the investments, which totaled $3.24 million, became public knowledge in 2004, the fire district attempted to get its money back. It has since received all but about $1 million, the Sentinel reported. Dixon was not named in any of the lawsuits because he had filed for bankruptcy and didn't have any money, it said.

Robinson said the Sentinel report mischaracterized Dixon's role in the fire district's troubles.

"He's hoping the focus is on finding his wife," Robinson said.

Paige Birgfeld, who graduated from Littleton's Heritage High School, said in her online posts that her divorce from Dixon left her with "huge" bills.

Her father confirmed that she struggled to hang on to the house and take care of her children by taking whatever jobs she could find, including working as a mystery shopper.

"She will hustle to make a dollar to make ends meet," he said.

Frank Birgfeld said the children are doing all right, but the two older girls cried a lot during a vigil last night. A live-in nanny helps take care of them.

"It was really heartbreaking," friend and vigil organizer Andrea Land said. "Her daughter was there. She hadn't cried yet. This finally gave her the catalyst to cry. Her friends were on the grass with her holding her."

Paige Birgfeld is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, about 110 pounds with sandy blond hair and hazel eyes.

"She is darn good looking," her father said. "She has an engaging, sparkling personality. She has no enemies."

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Mesa County Sheriff's Department at 970-244-3500.

Comments: My feeling is the escort business is very dangerous along with her recently seeing her First ex again which would upset her 2nd ex. Either one of these two reasons could be why she is gone. There may be a question that she left on her own too but I highly doubt that since she has children.

The article states that Paige had acupuncture office. It seems Paige had an assortment of professions. She was working without a license.

The search still continues for her.

I still believe if, and only if, (as they think) she worked for an escort service, this is why she could be missing.

Paige Birgfeld posted messages in March on www.chefsuccess.com indicating she feared the return of one of her ex-husbands, Rob Dixon, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported last week. She wrote that her children asked if their dad was going to kill her.

Dixon was arrested on charges of domestic violence after allegedly shoving Birgfeld during an argument and later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of harassment, the Denver Post reported.

Investigators have questioned Dixon and said he is cooperating fully. Dixon's attorney told the Post he was in Philadelphia working as a paramedic the week that Birgfeld disappeared.

GRAND JUNCTION – The father of a missing woman says searchers have found some of his daughter's personal items, including a series of checks he believes could be a trail left behind on purpose.

The searchers were looking for clues in the disappearance of Paige Birgfeld, a woman who has been missing for more than two weeks.

Frank Birgfeld, Paige's father, tells MSNBC that searchers found his daughter's checkbook and a series of her checks, along Highway 50 near Lands End Road, sound of Grand Junction.

The area is about 10 miles from where her burnt-out car was found on July 1.

Searchers tell 9NEWS they also found Paige's Blockbuster card and a couple of health cards.

"It kind of spurs you on. You never know what you're going to find," one searcher said.

"It's very important," said Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hikey. "It's a piece of the puzzle. We have talked about this before. You never know which piece of the puzzle is going to cause other pieces to fall together and give you some great progress."

Deputies and search and rescue crews have covered the area along Highway 50 multiple times since Birgfeld was reported missing on June 30.

On Saturday, authorities say more than 70 volunteers searched for Birgfeld. Nine teams of volunteers searched several areas, including a field that was approximately one mile from where Birgfeld's car was found burned and abandoned on July 1. The last anyone heard from her was on June 28.

Investigators said earlier in the week they now suspect foul play in her disappearance. They also released information about her employment in the sex industry for a number of years.

Birgfeld's older brother, Craig, joined the searchers looking in the field. He told 9NEWS why it was important for him to do that.

"Selfishly, for myself, I want to find my sister because I love and miss her. More so, I want to find my parents' daughter because I don't want them to go through any more time without her, but mostly I want her kids to have their mom. That breaks your heart more than anything else," Craig Birgfeld said.

Don Bedford is leading the volunteers for the Abby & Jennifer Rescue Foundation.

"We want to bring her home. She's got family members that are wondering, 'You know, Where's Mom? Where's my daughter?'" Bedford said.

The Abby & Jennifer Rescue Foundation was established in May 2002, after an initial organization and search for Jennifer Blagg of Grand Junction and her daughter, 6-year-old Abby Blagg.

Jennifer Blagg's body was found in a landfill seven months after her 2001 disappearance. In April 2004, Jennifer's husband Michael was convicted of her murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Abby Blagg's body has never been found.

I saw Paige's Dad on Fox today. No updates on finding her or the body. They just discussed finding some of the personal items. They also talked about her ex and the father stated he had an alibi so she either disappeared on her own or as I think, this case has something to do with her work in the escort business.

Will keep this thread updated as we keep all our cases on the missing women going with the latest news as we get it.

Ex-Husband Says Missing Mom, Who Moonlighted as Escort, Planned on Meeting Clients the Night She Vanished
Thursday, July 19, 2007

DENVER — The first husband of missing mom Paige Birgfeld says his ex-wife visited him the night she disappeared, and that she was planning on keeping two appointments with escort-service clients before heading home, according to an exclusive interview with FOX31-TV in Denver.

Howard Beigler also said he doubted he would ever again see his former wife, who vanished three weeks ago.

Click here to view the entire interview at MyFOXColorado.com.

Investigators are not focusing their investigation on Beigler, the station reported, though they have not cleared him or Birgfeld's second ex-husband, Rob Dixon, as suspects.

Beigler also told the station his ex-wife had knack for milking money out of men, but that he had hoped the two of them could rekindle their relationship.

Authorities have said they suspect foul play in the disappearance of 34-year-old mother of three who led a double life as "Carrie," a popular escort with service called Models Inc.

Ex-Con Named 'Person of Interest' in Missing Mom Case
Saturday, July 21, 2007

By Robin Wallace

Paige Birgfeld
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A 56-year old ex-con with a violent past is a "person of interest" but not being called a suspect in the case of a missing mother who moonlighted as a professional escort, authorities told FOXNews.com Saturday.

Mesa County Sheriff's spokesperson Heather Gierhart confirmed that Lester Ralph Jones has been named a person of interest in the June 28 disappearance of Paige Birgfeld and that police have searched his home twice, but said she could not confirm "any correlation" between the search of his home and the investigation into Birgfeld's disappearance.

"There are no suspects at all," Gierhart said. "There is a list of people of interest."

Birgfeld's two ex-husbands remain on this list, although authorities "believe their alibis," Giehart said.

She could not confirm that the two search warrants executed at a home Jones shares with his current wife, Elaine Jones, was related to his possible involvement with Birgfeld.

Gierhart said authorities were "not talking about" whether the police have interviewed, or have had any other contact with Jones in relation to the case. Although photographs of Jones—mostly mug shots from previous arrests—have been published in newspapers and on Web sites, the Mesa County Sherrif's office has not released any photographs of him.

He's right.

It seems like the missing women count is getting higher by the week! We have to figure what we can do to stop this terrible cycle. Good article by Cliff, covered quite a few woman.

On WS, I noticed they are trying to tie all the murders of the WI women to a serial killer around the Madison area. It seemed very possible. Take a look at the work compiled when you get a chance. They did a great job.

Grand Junction, Colo., sits nestled in the heart of a massive valley. Surrounded by the majestic mesas and canyons of the western Rockies, it is quiet, peaceful and so vast it's easy to imagine that someone could vanish there without a trace.

Frank Birgfeld's daughter Paige did just that when she disappeared earlier this summer. Now he searches the Colorado River for his daughter, convinced that she can be found.

Gun Found Near Missing Woman Paige Birgfeld's Burned Out Car
Monday, August 06, 2007

Paige Birgfeld
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A gun was found last week less than a half-mile from where authorities found the burned out car of a missing Grand Junction woman.

A man reported finding an unloaded Ruger 9mm handgun about 6 inches off the road Tuesday. The area is near where Paige Birgfeld's car was found July 1, a few miles from her Grand Junction home.

Birgfeld, a 34-year-old mother of three, was last seen June 28 and reported missing two days later.

A search along an area highway over the weekend of July 18 turned up several of her belongings. Investigators haven't said where the items were found.

Investigators said the gun was booked into evidence. No record was found on an initial check of its serial number.

Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey said it's not uncommon.

Even though there is a POI in this case, the whereabouts of Paige are still unknown. I am hoping we get some news soon in this case.

Paige's family are now trying to seek guardianship of her three children. They are now in the custody of her second husband.
