Kelly Nolan's disappearance leaving a bar two days after being fired from her summer waitress job bears some resemblance to Chandra's disappearance, as well as other recent women missing, Stepha Henry, another 22 year old who just disappeared leaving a bar (see Stepha Henry, 22, from NY, missing on Ft. Lauderdale visit) , Natalee Holloway, and Julie Popovich (see Missing Columbus Woman Did Not Go Willingly) disappearances.

Also of resemblance to Chandra's case is the newspaper's report of her ex-boss confirmed to be at a local swimming pier the day she disappeared, and that a dive team has searched the shoreline.

Was Kelly as puzzled at being fired as Chandra was from her intern job at the Bureau of Prisons, or is there instead a reason why the boss's whereabouts are being investigated after her disappearance?

Cops Look at Bar's Surveillance Video in Wisconsin College Student's Disappearance
Fox News
June 30, 2007

MADISON, Wis. — Police searching for a missing 22-year-old female college student are scouring surveillance video from the bar where she was last seen, according to WKOW.

The footage was recorded between 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, and 1 a.m. on Sunday, June 24, at State Street Brats, the tavern where Nolan was out with a group of friends until she left them at around 11:30 p.m. She hasn't been seen since. The bar is said to have been holding several hundred people.

Nolan's younger sister said the two women had a phone conversation early Saturday morning, and that was the last anyone had heard from her, said Joel DeSpain, public relations officer for the Madison Police Department.

The family said they knew something was wrong when she wasn't in touch for so long, DeSpain said, saying that the sisters rarely went a day without talking on the phone.

Nolan, originally from Waunakee, had recently bought an apartment and moved to Madison from Whitewater, where she went to school.

Family members said Nolan went to a job interview in Madison on the morning before she disappeared. Just two days before Nolan disappeared, she was fired from a summer waitress job at Orpheum, the owner told WKOW.

Henry Doane, the owner, was confirmed by WKOW to be at a local swimming pier at some point on the day Nolan vanished. A dive team searched that shoreline area but, according to WKOW, there has been no trace of Nolan.

“The case is still being considered a missing person case as far as I know,” DeSpain said. "However, we haven’t ruled anything out. The evidence does not suggest that a crime has been committed.”...

The Dane County Dive Team also has investigated area lakes and so far nothing of significance has been found, DeSpain said.

The Nolan family officially reported Kelly missing on June 24, after more than 24 hours without any contact with her.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported Nolan’s mother saying her daughter had not experienced any emotional turmoil in the days leading up to her disappearance.

DeSpain said Nolan was last seen wearing a green, sleeveless, scoop-neck shirt and blue jeans the night she disappeared. She also may have been carrying a handbag.

My hopes they find this girl Rd, have not heard anything at all about this case. Keep me updated please.

Also, reminds me of another case in WI that we covered but the name escapes me at the moment.

Good thoughts for the family and Kelly.

Still seeking Kelly Nolan

Submitted by dane101 on Sun, 2007-07-01 12:28. Current

The search for 22-year-old Kelly Nolan enters week number two today with little new information available to the public. Kelly's sister April explained to Dane101 via the "Have you seen Kelly Nolan" Facebook group that there is only so much information that can be provided to the public due to the ongoing investigation.

April was able to tell us that Kelly does not have a car. She began subletting an apartment in late May. According to other media and police reports Kelly left State Street Brats around 11:30 p.m. on June 22 and split up with her friends. On Saturday Kelly made at least one phone call to April, but if she spoke with other friends that morning is not known to the public. Kelly had been fired as a waitress at the Orpheum two days prior to her disappearance. Police say she may had been seen on the Memorial Union Terrace swimming pier Saturday (the last known possible contact). Dive teams have searched that area.

Below is a large version of the above flyer that you can print out and help post around town (click to view larger, right click to download). Anyone wishing to help in the search should join the Facebook group where you will be sent details on how to coordinate.

If I understand this correctly, goz, the whole thing about leaving a bar is a moot point because she called her sister the next day.

And the last place she was seen the next day is why the dive team searched the shore, as well as her ex-boss being seen there. (and being an ex-boss who fired her, likely an ex or wannabe ex).

So that explains why the interest in the boss being seen at the swimming pier and a dive team searching there.

Thanks for that info from Kelly's sister, goz!

Here's hoping that Kelly is found ok. But where an ex is involved, they never are.

I wish we could confirm if the ex-boss is indeed a true ex at this point because then of course we know the path to take once again!

Investigators Get New Leads In Nolan Disappearance
22-Year-Old Disappeared From Downtown Madison

UPDATED: 10:27 am CDT July 3, 2007

MADISON, Wis. -- Madison police detectives are getting new leads about a 22-year-old woman who vanished without a trace from the downtown area late last month.

Authorities said that members of the public are coming forward to offer new information to police about University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student Kelly Nolan.

Joel DeSpain, Madison police's public information specialist, said that Nolan's disappearance on Saturday, June 23, continues to be baffling. However, investigators said that new tips that they've received might fill some of the missing puzzle pieces, WISC-TV reported.

According to authorities, Nolan separated from a group of friends in downtown Madison late Friday, June 22. Some people have come forward to say that they saw her early Saturday morning in the area.

"We've gotten a lot of information that's come in on Crime stoppers," DeSpain said. "In addition, we've had people come to the Police Department who've indicated they saw her after midnight on Saturday, the 23rd. And that they either talked with her, saw her walking around. So these are people we've contacted. And we're interviewing them to find out what they know."

Authorities on Monday distributed a photo of a slate gray handbag that looks similar to the purse that Nolan was last seen carrying. Detectives said that they believe the purse is distinctive enough that it might provide new leads for witnesses who haven't yet contacted police. There has been no trace of her purse or any of Nolan's possessions since she vanished, WISC-TV reported.

DeSpain said that investigators are collecting surveillance video from any of the places that Nolan might have been the night that she disappeared and painstakingly examining the footage for any signs of Nolan and anyone she may have been with.

Nolan's family and friends have been putting up fliers since she was last seen. This past weekend, they distributed fliers in Warner Park and other locations. The family has posted a printable flier on Facebook.

A picture of the woman has also been placed on an electronic billboard on the Beltline, WISC-TV reported.

The Madison Police Department sent information about Nolan to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Friday, which will help distribute information about her disappearance.

DeSpain said that several days of investigating by all the Central District detectives should yield some solid information.

Nolan is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 125 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. Her sister said that on Saturday night, Kelly Nolan was wearing a green, sleeveless top with a scoop neck, a light pair of jeans, sandals with a heel and carrying the purse.

Authorities are asking anyone with any information about Nolan to call Crimestoppers at 608-266-6014.

Case Getting National Attention

As the search continues, the Nolan case is starting to get national attention.

CBS, CNN and Fox News Channel are some of the national media outlets that have contacted the Nolan family and Madison police.

"What we want to do is bring this young woman home, hopefully alive and well, so she can be reunited with her family," DeSpain said. "If some attention by the national media helps us in that effort, then that's good."

Police said that phones have been ringing off the hook from both local and national media outlets.

The last time a local missing person garnered national attention was in 2004 when Audrey Seiler's fake disappearance became national news story and later a notorious one.

"I'm not sure that we've ever seen anything in Madison like Audrey Seiler, and I think that there is no interest on the department's behalf that this becomes a spectacle like Audrey Seiler," said DeSpain.

Neither family nor police have reason to believe nationwide attention is necessary, but Kelly Nolan seems to have vanished without a trace. Family and officials said that they believe more exposure to her picture and story might help bring forward more clues to her whereabouts.

"We've gotten so many tips," said Kelly's sister, April Nolan. "The police have told us that's a huge help. As far as doing this, the more we get her name and face out there, the more information we're going to get."

"It's about sending out the loudest scream I could ever make and telling everybody that you'd miss someone you love," said Kelly's mother, Mary Jane Nolan. "That' you'd die for that person, that you want them back or you don’t know if you can make it through your life."

Madison has had a number of missing person cases over the last six years. Police said that there have been 154 missing adult cases since 2001. There have been 12 cases already this year -- three of which are still missing, including Kelly Nolan, WISC-TV reported.

Comments: so on Saturday people have heard from her or thought they had seen her. Wish we had a blow up of her purse since they say it is important. (unless you already posted and I missed it)

Goz, I am not seeing where the police or news sites have posted a picture of the purse yet. I'll post it here as soon as I see it.

Police and Kelly's family think someone will recognize it if they see it. But it's probably with Kelly or was thrown in a dumpster. It would be spotted pretty quickly out in the open.

Rd

Saw a picture of the purse on Fox News tonight. I agree with you though, I'm sure it has been dumped by now or is with Kelly. The article states the purse is unique but to me it looks rather ordinary like many women's purses I have seen...

Have not heard any further news on any leads so far. The case stands the same. No clarification on my end if the ex-boss was an ex.

dane101 (linked in an above post) is reporting that the info about the ex-boss being seen at the swimming pier was erroneous reporting on someone's part.

Also said she only worked briefly at the Orpheum Club he owned, so that answers questions about the ex-boss being an ex.

I'm going to post this whole article out as I found it very interesting and relating to this case and forum boards.

The pros and cons of websleuthing

Submitted by Jesse Russell on Fri, 2007-07-06 16:49. Current | Crime

One curious aspect of the Kelly Nolan case is the involvement of internet sleuths. Dane101 became aware of internet sleuths when we began receiving hits from a bulletin board called "WebSleuths." The members of the board began collecting facts and information they garnered from various news sources (including us) and have been using those to try and piece together the Nolan case. Reading the thread brings to light both the positive aspects and negative aspects of having armchair detectives working on a case.

One line drawn early apparently developed after some possible misreporting by WKOW had Orpheum owner Henry Doane at the Memorial Union Terrace on Saturday. This caused quite a bit of discussion in the WebSleuths board because Nolan briefly worked at the Orpheum and was also allegedly last seen at the Terrace (the FOX report has since corrected the misreporting). This misstep in reporting led to the sleuths digging into the background of a respectable member of Madison's community and drawing to connect him to Nolan's disappearance.

Over the last two days the board members have become increasingly frustrated over the radio silence from the police and Nolan family. Kelly's sister April has repeatedly said that certain parts of the investigation cannot be revealed due to police requests to keep it confidential. Due to April's insistence on respecting the law officers involved in the search for her sister some board members have gone as far as to accuse April of playing games thereby ignoring the emotional turmoil April must be experiencing as she leads the search for her sister.

(this lack of new information has also frustrated national media hosts - a producer for CNN's Nancy Grace actually called Dane101 to see if we would talk about the case with Grace. Our plan was to ask Grace why she never gave the same attention to Amos Mortier who is still missing after nearly two and a half years).

Thankfully level heads prevail and attempt to reign in those attacking April. those board members suggest that it is part of protocol and the police must have their reasons.

Toward the end of the most recent posts some interesting glimmers of hope leak out of the forums. After reading this morning's Wisconsin State Journal profile of Nolan the forumites suggest maybe she hasn't "met foul play" and could just be going through some hard time and could still come home.

It seems websleuthing does have some benefits when they can stay away from wild accusations and the blaming of victim's families. They can put puzzle pieces scattered through out various media sources all in one place. In many ways it functions like crowdsourcing does for business. A number of people with limited knowledge in one area benefit by working with a group of people who can collectively pool skills. They also keep the discussion going so at least someone is paying attention. Will the WebSleuths help the Kelly Nolan case? Only time will tell. We wish them luck and only ask that they be careful with the sniping and quick accusations.

Comments: Any thoughts on this all? I noticed much coverage was lacking in this case. Also, many families do not like their cases to be discussed. I know we always try and be careful here with what we post and how we represent our victims and are do not try to post names or blame. Thank God for that. Privacy is important yet open information is for the public use. See next article.
