America's Under-recognized Problem

Untold numbers of families are coping with the agony of a loved one who is missing. It's one of the most under-recognized issues in America today.

In 2000 - 876,213 missing persons were entered into the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer. Many adults who go missing are never reported.

Every year the media picks up a few high-profile stories of adults who suddenly go missing. People like Chandra Levy or Laci Peterson. For each of these woman's anguished families, there are untold numbers of other families who are coping with the agony and chaos that comes when a loved one is missing. Most of those families will never gain the closure that Chandra's and Laci's families' found. Instead, they may spend the rest of their lives wondering about the fate of their loved one.

The Nation's Missing Children Organization & National Center for Missing Adults

The Nation's Missing Children Organization, which John Walsh and his wife Revé helped establish in 1984, expanded to accept adult cases in 1995.

In June 2002, the National Center for Missing Adults was created. The first national clearinghouse for missing adults, the center serves as a central repository of information available to the general public, advocacy groups, law enforcement, medical examiners and coroners. The Center also provides support, technical assistance and advocacy services to families dealing with the loss of a missing adult

I do not think Chandra's family has had any closure. I guess they are referring to the body being discovered but as for closure, none.

Responses all?

Definitely no closure, goz. Finding her body and the aftermath of investigators actions for the next year resulted in more questions than answers.

I wonder if there was ever a case that was as misreported or misrepresented in the media as Chandra Levy's. I suppose that because it recieved so much attention in the early days that to the media that somehow equates some kind of 'closure'. I read where former DC Chief Ramsey wants to be Chicago's top cop, and that he mentioned his handling of the Chandra Levy case as proof of his qualifications for the job.

"I've been police chief in one of the most complicated commands in the country with the federal, state and local jurisdictions here. We went through the World Trade Organization protests, the Chandra Levy murder and D.C. sniper case. I have shown in 9˝ years what I can do for a major department," he said.

I think it should eliminate him from any consideration.

On the other hand, if the politicians want the chief to take care of any missing interns, he might be just the man for it.
