About Nina:

http://www.ninareiser.com./aboutnina.html

Nina Reiser is a beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, caring, devoted mother of two young kids, Rory, age 7 and Niorline, age 5. Nina is a trained medical doctor from Russia; she moved to the US in 1999 and has lived in Oakland, CA since then. Nina was last seen dropping her kids off with her estranged husband in the Montclair neighborhood of Oakland, around 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 3, 2006. It is believed that after Nina dropped her kids off, she went food shopping to a super market in Berkeley. She had planned to visit her best friend around 6:00 pm that evening but never arrived. She was reported missing on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 after she failed to pick her kids up from school. Her car was found by the police in Montclair on Saturday, September 9, 2006. Nina’s purse and groceries were still in the car. Neighborhood residents believe that the car had been left there since September 5.

Since her disappearance, dozens of people who know and love Nina, who have been touched by her smile and kindness, have contributed time, effort and money to help find her. Hundreds of others who simply cannot accept that a mother of two young kids, with no history of mental illness or running away, can disappear between Berkeley and Oakland on a sunny Sunday afternoon have held vigils, scoured the Oakland Hills for evidence and clues, distributed flyers and passed the word to friends, relative and acquaintances. Nina’s story affects all of us. Please help find Nina.

- a friend of Nina

Comments: I have not read any news on Nina as of late. Let us pray she is found. This is a summary about this wonderful woman and what has taken place.

Lots of news about Hans Reiser today. His famous defense lawyer, Daniel Horowitz, whose wife was murdered recently, bailed on Reiser.

Said Reiser didn't have any money to pay for a defense.

As if Horowitz didn't know that to start with. Things must really be bad if the rats are jumping ship.

Reiser pleads not guilty to killing estranged wife
Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer
San Francisco Chronicle
November 28, 2006

(11-28) 12:11 PST OAKLAND -- An Oakland man pleaded not guilty today to killing his estranged wife, whose body is still missing more than two months after she disappeared.

Hans Reiser, 42, entered a not-guilty plea in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland in the slaying of his wife, Nina Reiser, 31.

The computer programmer invoked his right to have a preliminary hearing within 10 days of today's court appearance. Judge Trina Thompson Stanley scheduled the hearing for Dec. 11, after which Judge Julie Conger will decide whether there is enough evidence to hold Reiser over for trial.

His mother, Beverly Palmer, showed no emotion during the morning hearing, but Nina Reiser's best friend, Ellen Doren, cried as she sat next to the victim's mother, Irina Sharanova.

Nina Reiser's friends said they were more focused on the fate of the couple's children and on finding their mother -- who has not been seen since September -- than on Hans Reiser's court appearance.

"The plea is not important to me," said Nina Reiser's boyfriend, Anthony Zografos, who accused Oakland police of not doing enough to locate the missing woman.

"I think that's unacceptable," he said.

Nina Reiser was last seen Sept. 3, when she took the couple's son and daughter shopping at the Berkeley Bowl supermarket, then dropped them off at her estranged husband's home on Exeter Drive in the Oakland hills, police said.

The couple's 7-year-old son told police he heard his parents arguing and using "not nice words" the day police believe he killed her, authorities said.

Nina Reiser's 2001 Honda Odyssey was found six days later about 3 miles from Hans Reiser's home, the groceries askew in the back seat as if someone had driven the minivan wildly, police said.

Today, attorney Daniel Horowitz withdrew from the case, saying Reiser couldn't afford his services.

"This is an incredibly complex case," Horowitz said in an interview. "It requires hundreds of hours of intense work and a major amount of staff involvement. He actually can't afford me. There's no money."

Reiser's other attorney, William Du Bois, said his client wanted to have the preliminary hearing set sooner rather than later. The attorney said the case against his client was "flimsy."

"No case in the history of California, based on circumstantial evidence of murder, has featured an investigation which ran such a short period of time," Du Bois said. "They have to prove not only that she's missing, which we all know, but also that's she dead, which we don't know."

Du Bois added that there's no evidence that her death was "caused by a criminal agency." His client had a number of theories of where his wife could be, including "all around the world," Du Bois said.

Doren said she wanted to focus on the couple's children. "The people suffering right now are the children," she said, adding that a fund for their education has been established.

Contributions can be sent to Education Fund for the Reiser children, 6114 LaSalle Ave. #127, Oakland, CA 94611, she said.

There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to the location of Nina Reiser. Police ask anyone with information to contact Oakland homicide Sgt. Bruce Brock at (510) 238-3821 or a police tip line at (510) 637-0298.

Wow Rd, this is shocking. I can't believe Dan bailed on the case. Wonder what the real reason was aside from the fact he knows that Hans is guilty but that usually is not the reason for Dan to jump ship! Shocking. And we know it can't be about money. As you said he had to know going in that Hans was broke. I'm just shocked.

I, of course knew Hans would claim his innocence, as we all knew he would. What I can't understand is all these men who have their "MAMA's" standing right there beside them willing to lay their lives down for them and of course lie for them. It makes no sense. Strange world.

I assume it does cost much money as Hans arrest is rather unusual being it is one of the few where there is no body and circumstantial evidence. Good for LE.

I hope they can find Nina soon and her family can have some peace and get the justice they deserve.

New Evidence Unveiled Against Hans Reiser

UPDATED: 12:47 pm PST November 29, 2006

OAKLAND, Calif. -- New information was released Tuesday about the case against Oakland software engineer Hans Reiser, NBC11's Jodi Hernandez reported.

Reiser is charged with the murder of his missing wife. He pleaded not guilty in an Oakland courtroom Tuesday morning.

SLIDESHOW: Images Of Nina Reiser

Police arrested Hans Reiser last month after authorities said they found Nina Reiser's blood in his home and car. Her body hasn't been found.

Hans Reiser's attorney Bill Dubois said Tuesday he hasn't seen all the evidence in the case and just learned prosecutors have potentially damaging tape recorded statements.

Even so, he said the case against his client is not very strong.

"No case in the history of California based on circumstantial evidence of murder has featured an investigation which ran such a short period of time," Dubois said.

Nina Reiser, 31, was last seen in early September when she dropped off the estranged couple's 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter at his house.

She never showed up for a meeting with her friend that evening.

"They have to prove not only that she is missing, which we all know, but also that she is dead, which we don't know," Dubois said.

Investigators said the couple's children were in the house when Hans Reiser allegedly killed his wife that day.

Nina Reiser's loved ones broke down in the courtroom, but said it's the Reiser children who are suffering the most.

"It's the worst crime I think that could ever happen in the world is to take the mother away from the children," said friend of Nina Reiser, Ellen Doren.

While Nina Reiser's friends and family want justice, they said that most of all, they want answers. They are urging police not to give up looking for her.

Also Tuesday, one of Hans Reiser's two lawyers told NBC11 he will no longer be working on the case. Daniel Horowitz told NBC11's Jodi Hernandez he is too busy with two other high-profile cases.

Friends and family have set up an education fund for the Reiser children, 7-year-old Rory and 5-year-old Niorline:

6114 LaSalle Ave No. 127
Oakland, Calif. 94611

Can't wait to find out what is on these tape recordings? Wonder what it is Rd?

I can't believe Dan bailed on the case.
I presume that Horowitz must feel differently about defending the guilty since his own wife's murder - that is the kind of experience that leads lawyers to become prosecutors, not defense attorneys (in defense attorney Lin Wood's case, the circumstances were complicated by the fact that his mom was murdered by his dad).

From all I have read about Dan, he seems to enjoy his work and does it well. I doubt he will ever change sides, (that is my opinion). Maybe Hans was even too much of a dog for him! Also, Dan does death penalty cases and after his wife was killed, he stated he would still stay as a defense atty.

Family seeks teen's treatment
By Malaika Fraley and Chris Metinko
CONTRA COSTA TIMES

As friends and relatives mourned Danville mother Dimitra Mantas on Wednesday, the teenage son charged with her murder was on suicide watch in a psychiatric ward.

Andrew Mantas, 16, was arrested Monday and accused of bludgeoning his 43-year-old mother to death with an aluminum baseball bat. Prosecutors have charged him as an adult.

Multiple sources said Andrew Mantas struggles with mental illness, and believes he is demon-possessed. He recently sought help for what he said are voices in his head. His arraignment has been postponed pending his release from the county hospital.

His family has retained defense attorney Daniel Horowitz, who vowed to show in court that Mantas is not a typical murder defendant.

"The structure of the legal system does not allow much compassion for a very disturbed young man," said Horowitz, whose wife Pamela Vitale was beaten to death by a teenage boy last year. "I don't think he should be treated the same as someone who kills and enjoys it, and I don't think it's what his mother would want. <snip>

MARTINEZ, Calif. - A teenager convicted of murdering the wife of a prominent defense attorney was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Scott Dyleski was 16 when he bludgeoned and stabbed his neighbor, Pamela Vitale, 45, in her Lafayette home on Oct. 15, 2005. He was convicted last month of first-degree murder with the special circumstance that Vitale was killed during the commission of a robbery.

Dyleski showed no reaction when he was sentenced. <snip>

The Oakland police and neighboring Contra Costa County are actively searching for Nina's body. SF news reports that Oakland police believe she may be in the Pinehurst Road area of Contra Costs County.

That would be driving off into the heavily wooded redwood tree forest about three miles from Reiser's house. Police are searching with dogs out to about 200 yards from roads. This is very similar terrain and proximity as in Chandra's case, and what it would have taken to find her.

County combs new location in Reiser hunt
Rescue teams search rugged Pinehurst Road, near husband's residence, in suspected murder
By William Brand, STAFF WRITER
12/03/2006

CANYON — Search and rescue teams with dogs and all-terrain vehicles combed both sides of rugged Pinehurst Road in Contra Costa County on Saturday in a new search for the body of 31-year-old Nina Reiser.

Reiser, the mother of two small children, disappeared in Oakland on Sept. 3. Her husband, computer software entrepreneur Hans Reiser, 42, has been charged with her murder.

It was a follow-up to the search on the Oakland side of the hills conducted in September, said Capt. Rick Kovar, of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office. He said about 50 volunteers, sheriff's deputies, members of the Contra Costa Search and Rescue team and others took part in the search.

Kovar said the search was conducted at the request of the Oakland Police, who believe her body may be found in the area. The area is less than three miles from Hans Reiser's residence.

(snip)

On Pinehurst Road on Saturday, Capt. Kovar said searchers were covering an area on both sides of the road out to about 200 yards. Crime statistics show victims are most often dumped close to a road, he said.

The search included part of Skyline Drive, then out Pinehurst through the hamlet of Canyon. Throughout the day, searchers carrying probes and teams of dog handlers could be seen along the road, which is usually lightly traveled.

Most of the area is heavily wooded, with towering redwoods blocking out the daylight. San Leandro Creek, which follows the road, is down a steeply sloping bank, a drop of a hundred feet or more at some points.

"We're only searching on the down side of the creek," said dog handler Leah Waarulf of Oakland. "We're trying to be thorough." Waarulf and her fellow volunteer, Scott Carlisle of Benicia, said they were counting on their dog, "Emma."

If there's a body to be found, Emma will find it, they said.

An Education Fund for the Reiser children has been set up and donations can be sent to 6114 LaSalle Ave., No. 127, Oakland, CA, 94611.

There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to the location of Nina Reiser. Contact Oakland homicide Sgt. Bruce Brock at (510) 238-3821 or the police tip line at (510) 637-0298.

SF news reports are that search for Nina in Canyon area of Contra Costa County was unsuccessful.

In my opinion she's underwater tied to the car seat, but he may not have had time to get closer to water than a bridge, and that may be too obvious.

She's with the car seat, though, so not in a shallow grave and the like in my opinion. If not dropped off in water, where is the next most likely place for a seat and body to be dumped?

Here are some clues in the many, many details from not just good, but great reporting from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism:

Shackled and Silent, Reiser's Husband Charged with Murder
By Christi Chidester
Reporting by the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism
October 12, 2006

OAKLAND--In a red jail jumpsuit, his hands shackled to his waist, the estranged husband of missing Nina Reiser appeared this afternoon in Alameda County Superior Court, where he was formally charged with the murder of his wife.

Hans Reiser, 42, did not speak during his arraignment, except to state his full name for the record. Judge Trina Thompson-Stanley ordered that Reiser continue to be held without bail, due to the high-profile nature of this case.

Reiser will return to court on November 28 at 9 a.m. to enter his plea. According to defense lawyers William DuBois and Daniel Horowitz, Reiser will be entering a plea of ‘not guilty' at that time.

Nina Reiser, 31, was last seen on Sept. 3 dropping the couple's two children off at the home of her husband in the Montclair district of Oakland. She was reported missing the next day after she failed to meet a friend for dinner and pick her children up from school. On Monday, police reported that they had obtained enough circumstantial evidence to declare Reiser a murder victim, and name Hans Reiser as the chief suspect. Police arrested Reiser that morning.

"We are not numb," said Ellen Doren, a friend of Nina Reiser who accompanied the victim's mother to court. "Now we feel angry and we want justice."

She continued, "We are left with two choices. Either Hans has something to do with it, or he knows someone who does."

Irina Sharanova, Nina Reiser's mother, would not comment on her reaction to seeing her son-in-law in court today. "I wish Nina had never met him," she said.

Beverly Palmer, Hans Reiser's mother, refused to comment after the arraignment. She spoke with the defense lawyers in the hall privately, then left the building quickly.

DuBois described Palmer's state as "shattered" and said she is merely "holding herself together."

DuBois also spoke of his client's demeanor today. "His spirits are relatively high," he said. "He knows this is a severe problem and a solemn undertaking."

Horowitz, who joined the defense at the request of DuBois, said that Reiser mainly spoke of his children, expressing concern over their well-being and care.

Both attorneys said they felt the evidence in this case would not be enough to convict their client. "Anybody can be charged with a crime," DuBois said. "The evidence against Hans Reiser is relatively flimsy."

The evidence was detailed in a probable cause statement submitted to the court by police today. The document chronicles Reiser's lack of cooperation with police investigators and outlines police evidence including trace amounts of blood found in Hans Reiser's living room and car, which "cannot be eliminated" as being from Nina Reiser.

Reiser's car had been parked in a residential area of Berkeley until police located the vehicle via surveillance of Hans Reiser on September 18. The next morning, police recovered the vehicle after Reiser again left the vehicle in a residential area a short distance from his home. Inside, police discovered two books on homicide investigation purchased at Barnes & Noble Books in Berkeley on September 8. The books, Homicide, by David Simon and Masterpieces of Murder, by Jonathan Goodman, both take an in depth look at how detectives investigate homicides.

Also inside Reiser's car were a large roll of black trash bags, a map of Manteca, CA and atlas of northern California, ‘shop' towels, a sleeping bag with a blood stain, masking tape, and recently purchased items from Kragen Auto Parts including a socket wrench and socket and a siphon pump.

Additionally, the front passenger seat of Hans Reiser's 1998 Honda CRX had been removed as of September 19. Reiser had been pulled over in Redwood City and issued a traffic violation on September 12. The issuing officer in Redwood City told police he is sure the seat was in place at that time and that Reiser seemed "very nervous." To date, police have not been able to locate the seat.

The Reiser's two children, ages 7 and 5, were interviewed by police in the course of the investigation. According to reports, the children told police their parents were speaking in a "medium tone" and using "not nice words" after they arrived at their father's house on September 3. At one point, the older child came upstairs from the basement into the living room where his parents were talking, and was instructed by his father to go back downstairs, and "not to come back upstairs, even to go to the kitchen area."

Both children repeatedly told police that their mother is a "liar and that she lies to the courts," although neither could recall a specific incidence of her lying except times their father told them she had lied. One of the children also reported that his father had told him not to cooperate with the police.

Police briefly detained Reiser on September 28 in order to obtain a DNA sample. Reports indicate that at that time, Reiser was in possession of $8900 in cash and his passport. Although he did cooperate with the DNA sample donation, he continued to refuse to speak to police about his wife's disappearance.

Police are still searching for the body of Nina Reiser. They said Monday that they have "strong, circumstantial" evidence that Nina's body is still in the Bay Area. They are asking the public for help in recovering her remains. Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3821.

Black trash bags and masking tape? Manteca? Sounds like Scott and Laci Peterson all over.

Stopped in Redwood City a little over a week after Nina disappeared, he still had his car seat then. Redwood City is on the SF side of the bay from the Reiser's. Was Reiser crossing Bay bridges looking for a chance to dump Nina in the Bay strapped to the car seat?

Did he find that too hard to do, and from the search for Laci Peterson in the news, plan on dumping her off a bridge north of Manteca such as the Lake Tulloch bridge as was considered a possibility in Laci's disappearance?

With all the facts and information we have on this case, I am positive that Nina is underwater too and tied to the car seat. It is the only possible place as all the evidence points to him dumping her in the water. I could be wrong though but I doubt it.

Hans states he is concerned about his children yet they overheard him arguing with their mother before she disappeared and he murders their mother. He is an ego-manic and just concerned with himself.

I thought Dan was no longer one of his attorney's?

You're right, goz. I just found this very informative article from UC Berkeley journalists, but this covers the earlier hearing. Dan dropped out at the last hearing where Reiser pleaded not guilty.

But, yeah, I think everything points to Reiser trying to pull a Scott Peterson without making the same mistakes.

Preliminary hearing to see if Reiser stands trial for the disappearance of his wife Nina started today. Questioning for next few days to find probable cause.

I can't wait to hear his explanation of the missing car seat in his car he was hiding.

On the other hand, just like Condit and Peterson, he won't be talking.

Ok, the current boyfriend is backing up the ex-boyfriend as into sadomachism, who knows what weird stuff that was, into M & M's as Cadee said she thought it was.

So Nina didn't want any part of that, and defense says he could have done it. Fair enough. Sturgeon will (and has already probably) need to provide an alibi.

That's the way it goes when your ex disappears and you're into M & M's.

UPDATE: SADOMASOCHISM, SPIES INJECTED INTO REISER HEARING
12/11/06

OAKLAND (BCN)

The attorney for an Oakland computer programmer accused of murdering his wife suggested today that she may have been killed by an ex-boyfriend who's into sadomasochism or because of alleged Russian spy connections.

In the first day of a preliminary hearing that will determine if there's enough evidence to order 43-year-old Hans Reiser to stand trial, defense attorney William DuBois attempted to attack 31-year-old Nina Reiser's character through aggressive cross-examination of witnesses presented by prosecutor Greg Dolge.

Nina Reiser, who was trained as a physician in her native Russia, was last seen about 2 p.m. on Sept. 3 when she dropped off the couple's two children at Hans Reiser's home in the 6900 block of Exeter Drive in Oakland.

Hans Reiser and Nina Reiser married in 1999 but separated in May of 2004. They were undergoing contentious divorce proceedings at the time she disappeared but the divorce wasn't finalized.

Nina Reiser was awarded custody of the couple's 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter but Hans Reiser was allowed to have the children one weeknight a week and every other weekend.

Nina Reiser's body hasn't been found, but in October Hans Reiser was charged with murdering her after Oakland police said they found biological and trace evidence suggesting that she is dead as well as blood evidence tying him to her death.

Nina Reiser's best friend, Ellen Doren, an Oakland woman who also is originally from Russia and has children about the same age as the Reisers' children, testified today that she became concerned when Reiser didn't come to her home as scheduled on Sept. 3.

DuBois asked Doren if she was aware of any connections Nina Reiser had to the KGB, the former name of Russia's spy agency, but Doren said no.

In court papers he filed as part of the couple's lengthy divorce proceedings, Hans Reiser alleged that Nina Reiser "is a product of a KGB-dominated society and is the child of someone who works for the KGB."

Antonios Zografos, an Oakland man who dated Nina Reiser for about eight months before she disappeared, said he became concerned when he couldn't reach her by phone the afternoon of Sept. 3, as they had planned to meet around 5:30 p.m. to have dinner and see a movie.

Fighting back tears and speaking in a broken voice, Zografos said the last time he saw Nina was at her house on 49th Street in Oakland about 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 2, just before he drove to Big Basin for an overnight stay with his children.

Zografos said he met Nina Reiser on July 30, 2005, after she responded to an ad he placed on a section of the Craigslist Web site for single parents who want to meet other single parents for engaging in mutual activities with their children. He said she had also placed on her own ad.

Zografos said their relationship became intimate in January.

Zografos said, "We became very close rather quickly" and they had discussed moving in together when her divorce was finalized.

Under cross-examination by DuBois, Zografos said Nina Reiser previously had dated Sean Sturgeon, another Oakland man, but had broken off the relationship because Sturgeon was into sadomasochism and "had a lifestyle that was unacceptable to her."

Zografos said he was present when Sturgeon returned his copy of the key to Reiser's house in January but admitted that it was possible that Sturgeon could have made an extra copy and kept it.

Zografos said he had his own key to Reiser's house and went there several times to look for her after she disappeared.

He said it appeared there wasn't a forced entry at her house and admitted that someone with a key might have been able to gain entry without leaving a trace.

Under further questioning by DuBois, Zografos said he downloaded some material from Nina Reiser's computer to search for clues to her disappearance and discovered links to personal ads on Craigslist.

DuBois asked if some of the ads were for sexual companions, but Zografos said he didn't read all the ads.

Hans and Nina Reiser's 7-year-old son, Rory Reiser, testified today that Hans Reiser told him and his 5-year-old sister, Nio Reiser, to go downstairs while he talked to Nina Reiser upstairs the day she disappeared.

Rory said, "My dad didn't want me to hear them," so he doesn't know if his parents argued that day.

Rory said his parents argued sometimes but more often would just "talk."

When Dolge asked him the difference between an argument and a talk, Rory said, "An argument is when they would use stronger voices."

Rory said the only argument he really remembers was "a couple weeks before" his mother disappeared.

Testimony in Reiser's preliminary hearing will continue Tuesday morning.

Dolge said the hearing could take four days, depending on how lengthy DuBois is in cross-examining witnesses.

Not that I put much stock in tabloid magazines, but this weeks Globe had an article on Han's and Nina's story so I had to buy it.

What was interesting is that it was very accurate and interesting. All the facts were correct and I feel this gives more exposure to the case.

I'm not sure if it was printed, or I forgot, but one of the crime books Hans had purchased was titled, "Masterpieces of Murder!"

Nope, goz, they're still having a preliminary hearing to see if he stands trial. It's being scheduled a day here or there around the lawyer's and court schedules, holidays, etc. It's been going on for weeks now to get six days of hearings in.

It's pretty much a dry rehearsal for the trial. All the stops are being pulled out by the defense even though it's virtually assured to go to trial.

Oh by the way, the defense says he bought those books to figure out what the police might do to plant evidence against him.

Lawyers who come up with that kind of stuff are pathetic.
