More than half of women pictured in killer's photo collection are alive
Updated 7/27/2006 6:44 PM ET

L.A. County Sheriff's Captain Ray Peavey Tuesday unveiled photographs of 50 women, which were found among the possessions of William Richard Bradford, who is on death row for murdering two aspiring models in the 1980s. Investigators rediscovered the photos last month and publicized them because they say Bradford posed as a photographer to lure victims into accompanying him, and they worried some had been raped or killed. Police now believe at least half of the women are alive.

This poster released by the L.A. County Sheriff's Department shows at least 50 women who may have been rape or homicide victims of convicted murderer William Richard Bradford.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Investigators who released decades-old pictures of about 50 women photographed by a murderer said Thursday they believe more than half the women are alive, but that one appears to be a homicide victim and another has been missing for years.
Several of those photographed by death row inmate William Richard Bradford have yet to be identified, but Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators said they have tentatively identified 28 women since publicizing the long-forgotten images Tuesday.

Twenty-six of those women were believed to be alive, sheriff's homicide Capt. Ray Peavy said. He said the other two are believed to be a homicide victim and a 15-year-old girl who has been missing for years, but no additional details were immediately available.

The photos of the women, many scantily clad and striking poses like amateur models, languished in an evidence room from 1984, when they were seized from Bradford's home, until detectives rediscovered them last month. Investigators were able to identify some of the women before releasing the photos, including several of Bradford's ex-wives and a victim of an unsolved 1978 slaying.

Investigators received more than 100 phone calls and e-mails since the photographs were posted on the Los Angeles County Sheriff's website Tuesday. A single e-mail from an unidentified sender listed 12 names.

Bradford, now 60, was condemned for killing two aspiring models in the early 1980s. Authorities say he posed as a freelance photographer and took pictures of women he met at bars and elsewhere, and are concerned that some of the women may have been victims of rape or murder between 1975 and 1984.Bradford's appellate attorney, Darlene Ricker, said Wednesday that the photographs were "old news" and that it was no surprise that they were found in a photographer's belongings.

In the penalty phase of his 1987 trial, Bradford asked jurors to sentence him to death, telling them, "Think of how many you don't even know about."

One woman in the photos has been identified as Donnalee Campbell Duhamel, a 31-year-old mother of two whose decapitated body was found in a Malibu canyon in 1978. A sheriff's official said Tuesday that the body was found a few days after the woman met Bradford at a bar. Bradford was never charged in that case.

On Wednesday, her daughter questioned why it took so long but was relieved that authorities were investigating.

"My mom just disappeared, and now she's getting the attention I feel she deserves," said Lisa Mora, 36, who was only 7 when her mother vanished. The family got confirmation of the death eight years later, she said.

Bradford was convicted of first-degree murder in the 1984 stranglings of Shari Miller, 21, who he met in a bar, and Tracey Campbell, 15, a neighbor. Prosecutors said he lured them into accompanying him with promises to help their modeling careers.

The photos date to the mid-1970s and could have been taken in any of several states: Bradford's past whereabouts extend to Illinois, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Oregon and elsewhere.

Comments: Thank God at least more than half of the women are alive. Let us pray they locate many of the other women and they are not his victims.
