Body Found Near Missing Woman's Home

Kristyn Hartman
Reporting

AURORA A decomposed body yesterday could be that of a woman from Aurora whose been missing since late October. That body was found yesterday near Farnsworth and Butterfield Roads, that’s in unincorporated Kane County.

The body was found less than a mile from the home of that woman whose been missing for almost two months now. Authorities focused their investigation on a nature path in unincorporated Kane County, very near a sub-division.

The sheriff says the body discovered in this trail area is in poor condition. They can’t even tell if it’s male or female. He speculates it might have been there 1-3 months. A man on an early evening winter walk found the remains.

Sheriff Ken Ramsey described, “A man was out walking his dog along the bike trail, his dog got away from him, and ran off into the wooded area off the bike trail. The man retrieved his dog, and he looked on and noticed that there was what appeared to be a badly decomposed body along the nature trail.”

The question now, could the body be that of 47 year-old Marilyn Bethell. The Aurora woman was last seen leaving work back in late October. Police determined she was the possible victim of foul play when they found troubling evidence in her home after a bazaar crash involving her stolen car. The person driving that car got away.

That it could be her, at this point, is purely speculative. Investigators here in Kane County say it will take “painstaking work” and that work could take time.

Kristyn Hartman reporting.

Thanks for that update, goz. Very similar to Chandra. We'll probably hear Geragos anytime now telling us she was out jogging.

We'll post a link to this news in Tara's thread. This is as I think Tara will be found.

Sadness for Marilyn's family and friends. All she tried to do was do her job to help people, and like rabid dogs, they turned on her.

Cops hunt for killer of Aurora woman
Coroner identifies body found in woods
By Crystal Yednak
Tribune staff reporter
December 28, 2005

The search for a missing Aurora woman turned into a hunt for a killer as investigators determined Wednesday that she had been slain in a wooded area just a couple of miles from her home.

Using dental records, the Kane County coroner's office confirmed that a body found Monday near the Illinois Prairie Path was Marilyn Bethell, 47, who was last seen Oct. 30.

Kane County Coroner Charles West would say only that Bethell died of head trauma. Authorities said they would not provide any specifics on the cause of death, details of the crime scene or evidence found in her home.

"There are some things only we and the perpetrator know," said Kane County Sheriff Kenneth Ramsey.

Investigators are particularly interested in finding two men involved in a crash with Bethell's car on Oct. 31.

Witnesses reported seeing an armed man speeding in her Honda Accord near her home. The man was followed closely by a red or maroon car, possibly a Dodge Intrepid, before he crashed into a parked vehicle. After the crash, the armed man jumped out of Bethell's car and got into the reddish car, which sped away.

Police entered Bethell's home through an open window, though they don't know if it had been forced open or left open, Aurora police said. Her purse, credit cards and jewelry were inside, but investigators found evidence that led them to believe foul play was involved in her disappearance.

On foot and by plane, police searched woods south of Butterfield Road near her home. Then on Monday, a man walking his dog along the Illinois Prairie Path northeast of Butterfield and Kirk Roads discovered a badly decomposed body.

Dental records, the body's size and clothes found at the site led police to believe it was Bethell, West said.

Evidence teams have been searching the wooded area along the Illinois Prairie Path but have not found a weapon, police said. They would not comment on whether there was any sign of a struggle. Evidence gathered from Bethell's car is being analyzed at a crime lab.

"To date we continue to have no solid leads," Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.

Bethell had worked as an administrative assistant, but she was looking forward to a career as a substance-abuse counselor. She had recently graduated from the College of DuPage and was working as an assistant to substance-abuse counselors at the SHARE program in Hoffman Estates, police said.

People she came into contact with through the program are being interviewed by police. They have ruled Bethell's boyfriend out as a suspect.

Lois Rettinger, a friend of Bethell's since the two were students at Downers Grove North High School, said that although the news of her body being found was horrible, it also helped in some respects.

"We can take care of her now. We couldn't do anything for Mari before this," Rettinger said. "I hated the idea that she was just out there somewhere."

The two months of not knowing took a toll on Bethell's friends and family. Just a month before her disappearance, Bethell served as Rettinger's maid of honor.

Friends said Bethell's warmth and empathy would have been a tremendous asset in her career as a counselor.

"She was a very good listener," Rettinger said. "You could talk about anything to her."

The Kane County sheriff's office will lead the homicide investigation, with Aurora police assisting.

"We probably have more unanswered questions than we have answered," Ramsey said.

The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. Aurora Area Crime Stoppers and the Kane County Sheriff's Office are each offering $1,000 rewards for information.

Anyone with information should call sheriff's investigators at 630-208-2024.

I found this link on Marilyn's case. We have not had any updates in quite awhile. At least they found the killer in this crime. Poor Marilyn. I feel he should be tried as an adult.

Detective cites factors that tie teen to death

By KATE THAYER - kthayer@kcchronicle.com

A teen told friends of a plan to break into an Aurora home and said he admired the car that belonged to the owner – a woman later found shot to death.

Those details and others were revealed at a juvenile court hearing Monday, nearly two years after 47-year-old Marilyn Bethell disappeared, to see whether the now-15-year-old boy should be tried as an adult in connection with her death.

The teen also is linked to Bethell’s death by his high school ID card, a car, a gun and DNA, according to testimony.

Prosecutors say the boy shot Bethell in the head after breaking into her home Oct. 30, 2005, and stealing her car, which later was abandoned after a hit-and-run crash. Bethell’s body then was left in a wooded area, off the Illinois Prairie Path in unincorporated Batavia Township, and discovered Dec. 26, 2005.

Associate Judge Wiley Edmondson will decide whether the teen should be tried as an adult after hearing about the Bethell investigation, along with the teen’s criminal and psychological background.

The Chronicle is not naming the teen because he is charged as a juvenile.

Sheriff’s Detective Steve Reitmeyer testified Monday during the hearing's first day about the events surrounding Bethell’s disappearance, and what led investigators to the teen.

He said a juvenile acquaintance of the charged teen told police that he was asked to “hit a home” around Halloween 2005 on Quail Court – where Bethell lived. The acquaintance declined to join the charged teen, Reitmeyer said.

Another acquaintance told police the teen admired Bethell’s black Honda, which was involved in a hit-and-run crash that alerted police to Bethell’s disappearance, according to testimony.

During a search of Bethell’s home after her disappearance, police found a tissue containing semen underneath a computer desk in a bedroom-turned-office, he said.

Tests of the tissue revealed DNA matching the teen, while a search of the Internet history on the computer showed visits to pornography sites, Reitmeyer testified.

A bicycle in the yard also had traces of the teen’s DNA on the handle bars, he said.

When investigators went to the teen’s nearby home, his mother allowed them to conduct a search, and police found a gun wrapped in a plastic bag that had been stored in the attic, according to testimony.

The bullet lodged in Bethell’s head matched characteristics of those used in the gun found in the teen’s home, Reitmeyer said, adding the gun – a Russian Tokorev – is very rare and has only been involved in one other area crime in the past 10 years.

During cross-examination the teen’s attorney, Raymond Bolden, pointed out that police were unable to make a definite match to the bullet because it deteriorated in the months before Bethell’s body was discovered.

Reitmeyer also testified that a dark red or maroon Dodge Intrepid – the same kind of car owned by the teen’s stepfather – was involved in a crash with Bethell’s car that alerted Aurora police to her disappearance.

Bethell’s Honda Accord was involved in a hit-and-run crash near White Barn Road and Stoney Brook Lane in Aurora – about two blocks from the teen’s home, police said.

Witnesses said the driver of the Honda crashed into a parked car, then ran from the car and got into a Dodge Intrepid, police said.

The Intrepid then sped away, leaving behind the Honda, which had a pillow with a gunshot hole through it, Reitmeyer said.

Bolden pointed out that police were not able to say for sure whether the Intrepid was the same one owned by the teen’s stepfather.

Reitmeyer also testified that a backpack with the teen’s Waubonsie Valley High School ID card inside was found on the path near the location of Bethell’s body. A man walking his dog found Bethell.

The hearing continues today. Testimony could include the teen’s psychological and criminal background, which involves several juvenile cases resulting in incarceration.
