CHICAGO -- Police have received several tips, but nothing to help locate a 47-year-old Aurora woman who police believe disappeared under suspicious circumstances Monday.

Now they are asking the public for any help that might lead them to the woman.

While police aren't sure of Bethell's whereabouts, they have recovered evidence from the vehicle and her home that may indicate that foul play was involved, NBC5's Anna Davlantes reported Monday.

On Tuesday, police returned to the home and continued to collect evidence and have ruled out robbery as a motive.

"There didn't seem to be anything taken from the house. There's no outward signs of that. We did find valuables in the home," said Dan Ferrelli of the Aurora Police Department.

Ferrelli said the focus of the investigation is on talking with Bethell's coworkers, neighbors and friends. Authorities were talking with a Rockford man who the woman had been dating, and they say he is coorperating.

Bethell's car was involved in a two-vehicle accident less than a mile from her home at about 7:05 a.m. Monday on the city's far east side.

When police arrived at the accident scene, in the DuPage County section of Aurora, officers found Bethell's 2003 black Honda Accord with heavy front end damage and pushed into the rear of a parked, 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche.

Witnesses told police that the Honda was driven by a black male south on White Barn Road at a high rate of speed, and was being followed by a red or maroon car -- possibly a Dodge Intrepid -- that was occupied by at least one male.

When the driver of the Honda attempted to turn westbound onto Stoney Brook Lane, the vehicle apparently "fish-tailed" and struck the Avalanche, a police news release stated.

Police said the driver of the Honda jumped out of the car and was struck by the car that appeared to be chasing him. Witnesses said the man got up and jumped into the red/maroon vehicle, which continued west from the area at a high rate of speed.

Witnesses said that the men in both vehicles apparently had handguns in their possession, NBC5 reported.

"We still don't have any information on the drivers. We are getting some information that will hopefully turn into some leads so we can cultivate those leads and get a picture of the puzzle," Ferrelli said.

Bethell is described as a white female, 5 feet 3 inches tall, 150 pounds, with red hair and brown eyes.

She works as a drug counselor in Hoffman Estates and was last seen at her job Sunday afternoon, NBC5's Kim Vatis reported

Bethell lived alone in a quiet cul-de-sac.

"It's like the neighborhood that everyone would like to live in. It's very nice and calm, your kids can be out playing. You feel safe," neighbor Angelica Cabrera said.

Vatis went to a Downer's Grove neighborhood where Bethell used to live with her father.

"She's just such a wonderful person, and such a sweet person, I can't even imagine that someone would want to harm her. I'm hopeful that they'll find her and that's she's OK," said Kathleen Benton, a friend of Bethell's.

"I hope they find her," said Marilyn Michalek, Bethell's aunt. "I hope she's not maybe a body in the woods there somewhere where in the future they will come up upon it."

Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora Police at (630) 801-6655; or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the suspects in the incident.

Massive Search Produces No Sign Of Missing Woman
Police Call Off Search Of Forest Preserve

POSTED: 10:52 am CST November 3, 2005
UPDATED: 8:26 am CST November 4, 2005

AURORA, Ill. -- Aurora police and officers from several other police agencies called off their search Thursday of a wooded area adjacent to a missing Aurora woman's home, saying the search had not turned up any evidence.

NBC5's Anita Padilla reported that authorities searched more than 450 acres of the forest preserve by Marilyn Bethell's home. More than 100 officers took part in the search and flagged potential pieces of evidence, but none proved to be helpful.

"There's more than one unusual aspect of this case -- there are several unusual aspects," said Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli. "And for us just not to have, not to be able to take information that we have and turn it into leads is incredibly frustrating for the detectives."

Bethell, 47, was last seen at her job in Hoffman Estates Sunday afternoon.

According to a news release, around 100 police officers organized into 14 teams to search a 1-square-mile area bound by Route 56 on the north, Eola Road on the east, and the Illinois Prairie Path on the west.

The area the officers are searching is adjacent to Bethell's home in the DuPage County Section of Aurora, police said.

Police said they did recover two pieces of clothing from a brush area. At this point, they said they don't think it has anything to do with the case, but will go ahead and take the clothing to the laboratory and process it anyway.

Police seek missing Aurora woman

November 2, 2005

BY DAN ROZEK Staff Reporter

Aurora police used search dogs Tuesday to hunt for a missing 47-year-old woman in woods near her home but found no signs of Marilyn Bethell, who vanished Sunday after leaving work.

In a baffling twist to her disappearance, however, police said Bethell's car was heavily damaged in a high-speed crash early Monday less than a mile from her house. But she wasn't driving her 2003 Honda Accord when it smashed into a parked vehicle, police said.

A man carrying a handgun jumped out of Bethell's wrecked car after the 7:05 a.m. Monday crash and hopped into a following vehicle, also driven by a man wielding a pistol, witnesses told police.

The crash prompted police to check Bethell's home on nearby Quail Court, where they found signs of a break-in, although investigators wouldn't disclose details.

The strange chain of circumstances -- along with unspecified evidence found in Bethell's car -- has police fearing for her safety.

"We think there's probably foul play at this point, but it's way too early to point fingers," said Aurora Police Chief William Powell.

Bethell, who is divorced and lives alone, was last seen about 3:30 p.m. Sunday as she left her job at a substance-abuse treatment center in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates, Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said. There were no indications that she had been threatened or harassed by patients at the facility, he said.

Bethell earlier this year had earned an associate's degree in addictions counseling at the College of DuPage, a school spokesman said.

A Rockford man Bethell has been dating has been cooperative with police and isn't considered a suspect, officials said.

Despite signs of a break-in at Bethell's house, it hadn't been ransacked and Bethell's two pets, a cocker spaniel and a cockatiel, were found unharmed.

Bethell is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds, has red hair and brown eyes, investigators said.

Anyone with information can call police at (630) 801-6655 or Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.

_______________________________________________

Let us hope she is returned. She was in a dangerous business, working at as a substance abuse counselor, even though the article stated she had no problems, plus this accident, and a break-in.

Looks like a home invasion to me and Marilyn unfortunately not with us anymore, probably thanks to her working trying to help drug addicts.

I doubt someone who invaded her home and left in her car went to much trouble to hide her body. But they've done the search of the woods behind her house. We can see that thanks to the good satellite picture made available. Thanks to that source and and Goz for finding it.

I'm surprised he/they would go to the trouble of taking her body anywhere, even out back into the woods, but then we're dealing with the lowest scum running around out there. Who knows what they could have done.

They wouldn't last a week without breaking probation if they were wearing GPS recording devices as all felons on probation should be doing. This is exactly why.

They can't be around decent human beings for very long without recommitting their crimes over and over, while we just wait for the bodies to show up. That is, unless we become one of the bodies.

Rd: You hit the nail on the head RD, as you usually do in most case sir.

I think possibly you should consider penning a future book on cases as such, (missing women), you have the touch, and the finesse for this type of work. I think with the cases we present on the this board, it may prove an asset to those out there to help in prevention of future crimes. Maybe I will go into more detail with you. I just thought of that.

I too find it strange after a home invasion, or any such scenario that anyone would take the time to hide a body RD! Why go to the trouble.

I'd like to pose a theory somebody suggested to me that might be on target is some way:

Suppose one of these so called druggies felt she had some money- (substance abuse counselors cannot write Rx's so this would be out, but then again, they are not the brightest light in the box, nor the icons of any community). You can see my feelings toward the addicted may mirror yours...

So, somebody may have followed this poor helpful woman to her home, probably doing the druggie thing, begging for drugs, or possibly this wonderful do-gooder in society was helping one get straight . She may have voiced some opinion that was not liked. Also, these sort of counselors are sometimes referred clients that are court appointed. (Not pretty)-- who do not really want to come clean.

They did not get what they want- I believe as the one who suggested the theory, she did not have what was needed that was what they were seeking, or maybe they came to "WHINE"....I have heard this before, many times over when working with an addict. Not a pretty sight.

They then maybe get her to come into their car, by force, and possibly one of the other predators, takes her in the other car, pissed and geeked out...Hence, her vehicle was located and it was stated:

to some effect---- A man fled to another vehicle after the crash. Maybe the articles found in her car were already there, most have their own personal items in their car.

Maybe as stated, they are not the brightest and one of the lowest forms of society we let roam the streets so they figured identity would be easy, HENCE, get rid of the body...

That may be one theory. This one does not sound like the case of a boyfriend out to get her...yet it could be random.

How sad....

and to quote you again and please let us try to take this action, maybe someone has a suggestion we can work on, or me:

I say this has got to start happening or we will let criminals rule or lives and roam the street to keep repeating crimes over and over. We need stronger laws.

I, as you probably believe, this woman is not alive. It is a shame another life is probably lost.

I was hoping Benn was working on GPS Monitoring research.

Have a good weekend all.

Can you help find Marilyn Bethell?

Missing Aurora woman Marilyn Bethell

By Matt Hanley
Staff Writer

AURORA – Police are searching for a 47-year-old woman who has been missing under suspicious circumstances since her car was involved in a bizarre accident a little more than a mile from her house.

Marilyn Bethell of the 2500 block of Quail Court was not in her car when two armed men were involved in the crash, and as of press time, Aurora police believe the certified drug and alcohol counselor might have met with foul play.

When officers came to Bethell's house on the far north side of Aurora to tell her that her car had been involved in an accident, they found signs to indicate she might have been a victim of a crime.

Police began their investigation Monday morning, when officers were called to the scene of an unusual accident that witnesses initially reported as a chase on White Barn Road in the DuPage County portion of Aurora.

Police found Bethell's 2003 black Honda Accord with heavy front-end damage and its air bags deployed.
The Honda had smashed into the rear of a parked pickup truck at a high speed, police said.

Witnesses told police they saw Bethell's Honda being driven fast by a black male, southbound on White Barn Road. It was followed by a maroon or red car, possibly a Dodge Intrepid, which was occupied by a male of unknown race, police said.

According to police, when the Honda tried to turn west onto Stoney Brook Lane, it fish-tailed and the driver lost control. The Honda swerved and struck the parked car.

The driver then got out of Bethell's Honda and was struck by the second car, which at first appeared to be chasing him, according to police. But the male got up off the roadway and jumped into the car that had just hit him, police said.

Both men then sped off westbound. Witness said both men were carrying guns, according to police.

Aurora Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said officers then found signs at Bethell's house and in her car that lead them to believe she might have met with foul play.

Police initiated a "protective sweep" at the house, Ferrelli said. They entered the home, but were unable to locate anyone inside, he said.

As of Monday evening, Ferrelli said there were no suspects and he could not elaborate on what police had found to indicate a crime might have occurred.

"We have to keep that close to the vest at this point," he said. "We're considering all possible scenarios to be sure we don't get tunnel vision."

Ferrelli said police have had no previous contact at Bethell's home.

From outside police lines, there was no readily apparent signs of foul play at Bethell's two-story blue house tucked at the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet, middle-class neighborhood. Police spent the day parked in front of the home, talking to neighbors and searching for clues.

Into the late hours, DuPage County Sheriff's Department bloodhounds were sniffing through the wooded areas that separate Bethell's back yard from Butterfield Road. Numerous Aurora officers, detectives and evidence technicians searched the house and tried to contact witnesses.

Neighbors confirmed the police description of Bethell, adding only that she often wore glasses. They seemed shocked she would be involved with anything considered suspicious.

They said Bethell is quiet, but friendly. Neighbors thought Bethell has lived in the house for at least three years, where they often see her gardening. Bethell has been divorced for several years and she lives alone.

She has been working as a drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselor in Hoffman Estates for a few months, after recently completing an internship and graduating from the College of DuPage.

Deborah Eastman, a friend for 10 years, said Bethell is enjoying the work and hasn't reported any trouble there to her. Police say Bethell was last seen leaving her office Sunday night.

Eastman was driving home when she heard a radio report that police were asking for anyone who knows Bethell to contact authorities. She immediately drove to Bethell's house to see if she could help.

"I just got an email from her just a few days ago," Eastman said. "It was one of those jokes you forward. She was just so nice."

Monday evening, as investigators combed through the house for clues and treat-or-treaters detoured around yellow police tape, Eastman waited in the rain to pick up Bethell's two pets — a tiny cocker spaniel named Cricket and a cockatiel.

None of the neighbors reported hearing any noise or commotion Monday morning. As Eastman smoked a cigarette she figured that Cricket — a dog more likely to shake than bark — wouldn't have been much help to its owner.

"Not that dog," she said. "He would lead you straight to the valuables."

Where to call

Police are asking anyone with information about Marilyn Bethell to call (630) 801-6655; or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the suspects.

Bethell is described as a white female, 5-foot-3, about 150 pounds with red hair and brown eyes.

It's really sad Goz but there may very well be a need to tell the story of these women victims and what needs to be done to protect them. I am focused on software for awhile, but we'll see what develops from there.

I see from the latest news that Marilyn or her body must have been in the trunk of the trailing red car. The first news accounts were confusing but it is clear now what these drug crazed predators did.

Well another woman, captured and likely dead. She was at risk by the nature of where she worked. Although the police stated that her house was not ramsacked and that robbery did not appear to be the motive. Either these men took Marilyn to a bank machine to get money, or that this murder was a payback for something related to her job, but still a drug addict would have taken anything that was not nailed down, unless the motive was to simply steal her car, and as you say why bother to hid the body.

The other thing to look at, who is the beneficary of her estate? Who would have a motive?

Surely someone at the scene of the accident might be able to identify her assailant if pictures of those in drug conselling were shown to them?

I'm wondering if Marilyn's former husband was paying alimony?

This sure looks like a gun for hire. I cannot see that a drug dealer/user would not have ramsacked her house. This does not make any sense.

The only reason I can think of that Marilyn's body was hid was that she was sexually assaulted and the perps did not want to leave any DNA evidence. This still might be a gun for hire.

rd, where does it say about the body being in the back of the red car, one wonders if the accident was intentional, had they planned to place Marilyn in the car, and make it look like she was in an accident but could not do so as witnesses appeared?

It is difficult to comment on this case as the police are for obvious reasons keeping much of the information MUMM at the moment.

kate, I am saying it is obvious to me she was in the trunk of the trailing red car, and that these are drug crazed predators who invaded her house because they knew of her through her job trying to help the bastards.

It is obvious to me, may not be to others. :)

Ok rd, I get your drift. It seems like a weird time to break into a house so may people up at 7am who could have seen the perps placing her body in the car, and I just can't help thinking that this was a hit of some kind. Perhaps, someone who was using drugs who was in one of her programmes thought she was going to rat them out, perhaps tell the probabtion officer. Unless the police have been misleading about the information of the house not being trashed this appears more like a murder for hire or to keep someone quiet. Just can't get over if it is one of her clients that they would not have taken what they could to sell, but perhaps they wanted only her car, which seems unlikely.

One wonders also, if Marilyn if she was ALIVE in the trunk at the time of the accident, headed to her bank to get money out on an ATM card by extortion. Seems very weird that drug dealers/users would have only taken her car?

I see in one newsarticle where the airbag was deployed, perhaps the police can glean some DNA off the airbag, and fingerprints from her car or house. I've a feeling that these dudes are exfelons, or on probabtion
and likely have their fingerprints on record, and with any luck their DNA.

As it seems apparent that they were planning on keeping her car perhaps they were not too careful about wearing gloves inside the car, and hopefully they were real stupid and did not wear any inside the house.

Friends Hope Vigil Will Help In Search For Woman
Marilyn Bethell Disappeared Last Month

Pamela Jones
Reporting

(CBS)

Friends of a missing woman from Aurora are making a new push to help solve the case.

They’re holding a vigil Friday night for Marilyn Bethell at the College of DuPage in hopes of generating new leads.

As friends gathered for the vigil they said, contrary to original reports, Bethell has a host of people who were close to her and don’t want this case to be forgotten.

She’s a 47-year-old counselor who police say seemingly vanished at the end of October.

Her stolen car crashed in a traffic accident just blocks away from her home in Aurora. Police say the driver fled in another car.

Investigators searched Bethell’s home and found evident leading them to suspect foul play.

People who studied with Bethell at the College of DuPage say she graduated with honors in June. Classmate Kimberly Groll is leading part of the service.

“I am not going to say a prayer at this point. I am going to ask people to reflect back on their memories and to join hands, bow and say an individual prayer for her,” she said.

Other friends say they feel out of the loop.

“What’s frustrating to us is that they’re saying she doesn’t have a lot of family. And what we’re picturing is if there was family jumping up and down in the driveway, saying, you know, ‘I miss my daughter, I miss my daughter. Where is she? Tell me something.’ They’re getting more feedback from the police. And we’re like outside the loop. We feel powerless in it,” said friend Sandy Adler.

Aurora police say this case is still considered an open investigation. They say there are no new details to report publicly, and they are still looking for the men involved in the crash.

_______________________________________________________

Let us pray this case has some conclusion soon. It appears this lovely lady who chose to help others during her lifetime and is cared about by many is found. Thankful her friends are still searching. It seems the men involved in this crash may/are responsible for what may have been the cause of Marilyn's disappearance. No doubt (on my part) drugs played some part in this incident, her being a counselor to those in trouble.

Vigil keeps light on missing woman
Aurora drug counselor was last seen Oct. 30

By James Kimberly
Tribune staff reporter
Published November 19, 2005

In the stillness of a nearly vacant building at the College of DuPage, 23 women clasped hands Friday evening and prayed for the safe return of an Aurora woman whose mysterious disappearance three weeks ago continues to vex Aurora police.

Marilyn Bethell, 47, recently graduated from the school and began working as a state-licensed substance abuse counselor. She was last seen Oct. 30 at the SHARE program in Hoffman Estates, where she was a counselor.

Some of those who gathered Friday had known Bethell for years, others had only recently met her. They came, they said, to make sure their missing friend was remembered.

"I think she will stay in our hearts forever," said Linda Tkachenko of Addison.

Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the investigation into Bethell's disappearance continues. There were no developments to report as of Friday, Ferrelli said.

Bethell's disappearance was particularly troubling because her car was involved in a traffic accident just blocks from her home on Oct. 31.

Witnesses told police they saw an armed man get out of her 2003 Honda Accord after he drove it into a parked car. The man was hit by a red or maroon car, possibly a Dodge Intrepid, that had been following the Accord south on White Barn Road at a high rate of speed. The armed man then got into that car and it sped away. Police said evidence found in Bethell's Accord and in her Quail Court home leads them to believe she met with foul play, but they won't discuss specifics.

"She was a bright, smiling face at work all the time," said Phyllis Siebert of Hoffman Estates, who worked with Bethell at SHARE. "Our last conversation was about our plans for the future. I hope that we still have all those plans."

-----Prayers for Marilyn

Few missing persons turn out suspicious.

AURORA — Marilyn Bethell is only one of dozens of adults who are annually reported missing in Aurora.

Some are getting out of bad relationships and don't want to be followed.

Others have issues with substance abuse and try to make a clean break.

A few just need to get away.

But the vast majority, according to police, simply return home.

Very few missing-person cases ever raise suspicions for police the way the bizarre disappearance of 47-year-old Marilyn Bethell has.

"If they're an adult, and if they want to leave, they can leave," said Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli. "It's not a crime."

So how do police decide which disappearances are dangerous?

According to Ferrelli, a typical investigation begins by police talking to the family and friends closest to the missing person. Investigators try to determine if the disappearance seems out of the person's normal behavior.
They also consider whether police have a prior history of contacts with the individual.

Finally, the biggest warning is any sign that foul play might be involved.

"There are obvious reasons those cases were red-flagged," Ferrelli said.

That's when police usually turn to the public for help in gathering information about the missing person or suspects.

In the last three years, the disappearance of two other young Aurora women has frustrated police: Tyesha Bell, a 22-year-old mother of two who vanished in May 2003, and Lourdes Contreras, 27-year-old Aurora woman who was reported missing in October 2002.

Bell went missing late on May 8 or early May 9, 2003, from the West Side apartment she shared with her sister. At one point, police questioned a person of interest in the case, but no one has been charged with a crime — nor has it been proven that a crime occurred.

Still, police are convinced Bell met with foul play. A search of her apartment led police to believe that she expected to return home, and her mother says Bell would never have abandoned her two young children.

Police describe Bell as a black female about 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, with black braided hair and brown eyes.

Similarly, family members became concerned when Contreras failed to check in on her two daughters who lived in California.

The Aurora woman has not been seen since July 5, 2003. However, her pickup truck was discovered in early October outside a Target store in Naperville.

Contreras is described as a 5-foot-5, 130 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Bethell, Bell or Contreras is asked to call Aurora police detectives at (630) 801-6655. Callers can remain anonymous by calling Aurora Area Crimestoppers at (630) 892-1000.

Comments:

There has been no news of missing Marilyn as of yet. The police seem to be lost in this investigation. Let us hope she is located soon. I don't think this case is any more baffling than most others, except it does not involve most likely a boyfriend or x-husband as the suspect.
