Update on Nancy Grace on Tara tonight. Tara's sister was on, video of them decorating her tree, the sister saying maybe you can't put Tara in a car and bring her back home but any info whatsoever will be rewarded if they can find her, they say they will follow up on leads even if the police can't.

Equusearch saying they will come back in January, hoping for a lead to help determine where to search intensively.

The sister named an area that was the last tip that Equusearch searched when they were there, a wooded area that was only described as an area of interest, about 25 miles from Ocilla.

I think it was said at the time that some clothes or a tshirt was found there, but they didn't elaborate tonight, just a place of interest.

portion of CNN Nancy Grace Dec. 23 transcript:

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: We have not given up on the search for a beauty queen turned school teacher, Tara Grinstead. I want to go straight out to Tara`s sister joining us, Anita Gattis.

Thank you for being with us. What is the latest with the investigation?

ANITA GATTIS, TARA GRINSTEAD`S SISTER: Well, as you know, we have an additional $100,000 that has been pledged. And that`s for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was involved in Tara`s disappearance.

The money that we had before was for safe return. So we are very thankful that we have this money. We hope that there`s someone out there who`s got information. They may have at some point been involved with Tara`s disappearance. They may not be able to put her in a car and bring her home, but they may have some information that would be very helpful to us, the family and law enforcement.

GRACE: Anita, I know that EquuSearch has been out in Texas. They just recovered the body of a little girl, 12-year-old Teke Buggs, there in Brazos River. I understand they`re back working on your case. Have they received any new tips?

GATTIS: I`m not sure if they`ve received any new tips since they went to Texas, but Mr. Miller assured me they would be back in January.

GRACE: Can you tell us about the last tip they received?

GATTIS: The last tip that EquuSearch received had something to do with a wooded area called Queensland. It`s in Ben Hill County. It`s about maybe about 25 miles from Ocilla. And that was where they concentrated their search the last day that they were here.

GRACE: Let me ask you whether police have finally gotten around to questioning various people in her classes. Tara worked all day as a schoolteacher, and she was attending two different colleges at night, one in Valdosta, one in Waycross, Georgia. Have they spoken to the teachers and the other students of those night classes yet, Anita?

GATTIS: I`m not really sure if the GBI has done that yet. My husband has been back in touch with a couple of other students that have not been questioned. So, you know, I have no clue about that. I don`t believe anyone at the Waycross campus has been questioned, and they are adjourned for Christmas break and will not start back until January. Tara actually would have graduated the first week of December with her six-year specialist degree, had she been able to finish school.

GRACE: Anita, if you don`t mind, for the viewers that are just hearing about Tara`s case tonight, bring us up-to-date about her disappearance.

GATTIS: Tara had been to a dinner party, a cookout, watched a ballgame on Saturday, October 22nd. She did not show up for work at Orwin County High School (ph), where she`s a high school history teacher and a middle school assistant principle.

On Monday the 24th, the police were called in at that point. We`re not sure exactly when she disappeared, if it was, you know, sometime during the early hours of the 23rd. We just aren`t really sure...

    (CROSSTALK)

GRACE: You know what? Wait, wait, wait. Anita, the background is so loud I can`t quite hear you.

I`m going to go to Pat Lalama, investigative reporter. Pat, help me out, so the viewers can hear about the case of Tara Grinstead.

LALAMA: OK. She had gone to this event, as was mentioned, then afterwards had gone to dinner at a former superintendent`s house. There was a barbecue, lots of fun. Everything seemed fine. And then, as far as everyone knows, she went home.

What was found in her home were the clothes that she was wearing that night and her cell phone was there. What`s interesting is that her car was locked and her home was locked, and her keys and her purse were gone. This is all that has been left to deal with and to look at.

GRACE: There have been extensive searches for Tara Grinstead. Right now to Joe Huston with EquuSearch.

Joe, thank you for being with us. Explain to us what you`re doing to help find Tara.

JOE HUSTON, TEXAS EQUUSEARCH: Well, obviously, we`re still in the process of looking for her. Right now, we`re waiting for the public -- and hopefully this show will help today -- to give us some more leads.

While we were in Georgia, we did receive the lead, as you previously heard. We searched that area. We plan on going back in January. But before we go back, we would like to have additional leads come in before we know what areas to search specifically.

GRACE: This last tip that you got about a wooded area, what did the tip say? Was it about clothing, having seen her there, what?

HUSTON: It was basically just that it was an area of interest. And when we receive a lead like that, we try to cover it as quickly as possible, because if it is an area of interest, and it was a fairly heavily wooded area, it would be an ideal place for somebody to dispose of something if Tara was disposed of.

GRACE: Take a listen to what a family friend had to say.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It`s time for us to make tougher laws against those that go out and kidnap those that we love. So many times now you can walk into a Wal-Mart or any other place and there`s posters all over the place of missing children or missing loved ones.

And it`s more prevalent now than any other time in our history. So it`s time that we get tough on crime. And we want to make it a way that people won`t think about doing this, you know, that we can stop some of this or we can put people behind bars for long periods of time.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re still -- we`re following up on calls we get and stuff. We`re not leaving anything unattended, no matter how small. We`re still checking out that everything that anybody calls in for us.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: I`m going to go try Anita Gattis one more time. She`s standing outside down in Georgia. Anita is Tara`s sister.

Anita, as you are facing the Christmas holiday, this has just got to be hell for you.

GATTIS: It really is a horrible time for our family. Last night, we had a tree lighting at Tara`s home. There were approximately 50 or 60 people that were here, brought ornaments. Several girls that had been in pageants that Tara had helped sang some Christmas songs. It was a very special time for us.

We wanted to do something with Tara. And since our family will not be celebrating Christmas, this was just one way that we could let friends, family and students have a little something special for Tara this holiday.

GRACE: Anita Gattis, we`re looking at video of you right now where you decorated your sister`s house. Are you losing hope?

GATTIS: Nancy, I`m not losing hope at all. I have thought from the very beginning that Tara is alive. I still feel that in my heart, in my soul, in my gut. I just want to get her back. I just want to get Tara back home.

GRACE: Before we go to break, Anita, what can we do to help you?

GATTIS: Nancy, you can keep her face, her story in the media. We don`t want anyone to forget Tara. We also need to have this additional reward published. If there`s someone who does have information that maybe he can`t put Tara in a car and drive her back home, but any tip that we get in at this point, even if law enforcement is not following up, as you know, the family certainly will.

GRACE: As we go to break, you can go online to find out about the case, www.FindTara.com, www.FindTara.com. The reward is up to now $200,000. This flyer says $90,000. The reward is up to $200,000. Tip line: 912-386-2564.

47 year old Marilyn Bethell found near her home, off of a nature trail, close to an intersection, very similar to Chandra. We'll probably hear Geragos anytime now telling us she was out jogging. This is as I think Tara will be found.

Congressman To Meet With FBI To Discuss Missing School Teacher

Congressman To Meet With FBI To Discuss Missing School Teacher
Kingston Looks For Federal Role in Four Month Old Search for Tara Grinstead

By Seamus McGraw

(Crime Library ) OCILLA, GA (Jan. 24, 2006) Though he has nothing but praise for the way the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has handled the four month old probe into the fate of missing school teacher and beauty queen Tara Grinstead, Congressman Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) says he plans to meet, perhaps as early as Wednesday, with FBI officials to discuss the young woman's mysterious disappearance.

Rep. Jack Kingston

"I don't sense that they're sitting on anything, I think they're vigorously pursuing this," Kingston said of the state's leading investigative unit during a brief interview Tuesday with Crime Library. "This is you know high profile so that they're not going to let it get on the back shelf."

Kingston, a seven-term Republican and a member of the House GOP leadership, made his comments after a brief meeting with Grinstead's family and local authorities spearheading the search for the missing woman. Kingston, whose district includes the rural Georgia community where Grinstead was last seen, credited the GBI with conducting a thorough investigation, thus far. Investigators, he noted, have quizzed all the key players in the missing teacher's life, including family members and former boyfriends. But if authorities have learned anything that might shed light on Grinstead's fate, he said, they're keeping it to themselves.

"Everybody has checked out...those that were close to her, but then again there could be things that the GBI for their own reasons don't want to disclose up to this point," the congressman said.

Despite his praise for the GBI, Kingston said he has scheduled a meeting with federal investigators to discuss a possible FBI role in the probe. "The FBI has not really been called in on the case, they're gonna help the GBI if they're asked, but right now the GBI has been handling it themselves, there's no federal hook," he said. Kingston said he plans to explore with FBI officials "what it is that we can do, what would bring them in."

While the FBI can assist local and state authorities, and offer its technical and investigative expertise as a resource to them, it is generally barred from actively participating in a case unless it is a major crime that crossed state lines or unless it involves a violation of federal laws.

The irony goz is that having disappeared, how would anyone know if someone crossed a state line with her, yet it is that very unknowing that should require bringing to bear the full capabilities of the FBI to find out.

With spring coming the searches done over the winter will probably have been the best chance to spot Tara's location before everything is grown over.

Sue Ann Ray north of Atlanta wasn't found until her ex led the police to where he buried her. Many other women remain unfound.

Sadly, so does Tara.

Just a thought, I've been thinking with all the searches conducted in the area, that Tara has to be hidding on someone's personal propery, buried at sea or in the water, or wondering if she's been buried in someone elses grave....someone who died around the same time, two in a coffin sort of thing. It seems remarkable that if the student or someone random killed Tara that her body would not have turned up before now?!

Wondering when and how Tara's ex became an ex cop. Certainly, the cop who spilled the beans should have been disiplined for breaking confidentiality, and it does seem surprizing that the cop whom he told and he were still friends. The ex boyfriend would have gotten his friend in deep doo with the department, just seems very unlikely that they would still be friends, as the cop whom the boyfriend told on about the student, should have been pretty ticked for telling Tara the story.

Regarding the fact that they were driving around all night does indeed seem fishy, in fact this seems incredulous. No alibi!

It almost appears that whomever abducted Tara had to know her, as the only sign of a struggle was the broken or overturned table lamp and the alarm clock. It would seem that the person was able to get close enough to her while she was in bed (appears to have been in bed) not to have created more havoc in the house.

Tara hardly appears suicidal! Perhaps the police man and exboyfriend should step up to the polygrapher as well. It seems very unlikely that the student would murder Tara, as he knew the police would be all over him like flies to honey..

I personally believe that Tara has not been found as someone with some sophisticated knowledge of hidding people had a hand in disposing of her body.

Nancy Grace had a photo of Tara up for a moment and said that someone at some site, and I didn't catch who, posted a timeline that said Tara disappeared sometime between 11 pm and 5 am, and then alluded in the timeline to a former local policeman she knew was known to be in the area at the time, at least that's what I gathered from what Nancy said.

Nancy said she was glad it's out there now, but it needs to be said, and focused on publicly. The work on the timeline helped make that happen.

Grinstead search focuses on ponds

Tara Grinstead, from a beauty pageant.

March 27, 2006

Ben Hill County -- Right now, a search team is in Ben Hill County trying to find evidence that may lead them to missing Irwin County teacher Tara Grinstead.

Grinstead has been missing for more than five months, and the few leads law enforcement officers have received, have turned up little in the case, but they hope for a change of luck soon.

Over the weekend, a search team assembled in Ben Hill County to canvas land and check ponds for any sign of her. Two-dozen ponds were searched, but only one of them has triggered any particular interest.

A cadaver dog hits on a spot at a pond in Ben Hill County. A rare site, considering 23 other ponds were searched over the weekend, with no response from the dogs, but this pond is different.

"We had three dogs yesterday, different dogs, that actually hit on this pond. We took them out in the boats, and they all hit, pretty well the same place, in the boats which is right behind me now, and that dog hit also," said Ben Hill County Sheriff Bob McLemore.

So Monday, divers from Lowndes County are searching the pond, inch by inch, but even if they find nothing, the search here, is not over. "It's not a problem, if the divers don't find anything today, because if plan A, plan B and plan C don't work, we've got D, E, F, G and H. We are in this for the long haul until we find Tara," said the missing woman's sister, Anita Gattis.

Gattis, the possibility of finding her is long overdue. "It's been over five months. Some days, we are very apprehensive about, are we ever going to find her? And some days, we feel very positive that hopefully there will be an outcome," said Gattis.

And perhaps today will be that day, but, perhaps not. "We don't know what the answer is at this time, we're still searching and the divers are going back in in a few minutes and see if we can search the rest of the pond," the sheriff said.

The landowners where that pond is located say if the divers don't find anything, they'll be happy to drain it, in order to do whatever they can to help find Tara.

Grinstead's case has gained national attention. Anita Gattis and her husband Larry will be taping an episode of Montel Williams later this week.

Is Tara search nearly over?

Ben Hill County Sheriff Bob McLemore says three different cadaver dogs have alerted on a pond near Fitzgerald.

I'm hoping the pond will hold results needed and the search for Tara will come to a conclusion so at least all will know what has happened to Tara after a long 5 months.
- Prayers for the family and for Tara. -GG

I wonder if this is the same area that Texas Equusearch pulled all their searchers to based on a tip to the police. The tip was not disclosed, they never found anything, but perhaps there was something to that tip.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a suspect linked to that tip that they also won't disclose, at least until they find Tara.

Grinstead Supporters Plan New Search for Missing School Teacher

by Seamus McGraw

April 11, 2006

OCILLA, Ga. (Crime Library) — Supporters of missing schoolteacher and beauty queen Tara Grinstead say they have some promising leads and plan to rally their volunteers for yet another search later this week.

As they have on several recent occasions, supporters are keeping the precise location of the search a secret, fearing, they say, that any advance publicity might compromise their efforts. But according to Larry Gattis, the missing woman's brother in law, the new search, scheduled for Thursday, Friday and possibly Saturday, will focus on an area that has already been combed by volunteers. The location — which will be disclosed to volunteers on Thursday when they convene at what has become the command center for the Find Tara effort — was picked because during one of the earlier searches six out of eight trained cadaver dogs responded to something in the immediate area.

Tara Grinstead

That, Gattis said, convinced Grinstead's supporters that the area warranted a closer look.

So far, of course, neither searchers nor police have found any tangible evidence to indicate what happened to Grinstead. The missing woman's family and supporters have long suspected that the now 31-year-old teacher, who vanished on Oct. 22, may have been abducted. In recent weeks they have said they become increasingly convinced that she was killed, in all likelihood, they maintain, by someone who knew her.

Investigators, including members of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the local police and sheriff's department, have been far less definitive in their statements about the case. Officially, it remains a missing person's case, and authorities say they don't have any evidence that indicates conclusively whether she was a victim of a violent crime or a young woman, under immense pressure from her studies and emotionally overwrought by her troubled love life, who simply ran away.

New witness reported in Grinstead disappearance

By Liz Fabian
TELEGRAPH STAFF WRITER

OCILLA - New tips are coming in after word surfaced of a new witness and suspect vehicle in the disappearance of Tara Grinstead, said the sister of the missing Irwin County High School teacher.

The Tara Command Center - a clearinghouse for tips, searchers and volunteers - received about a half dozen calls this week after a North Carolina criminal psychologist working on the case said he located a new witness, said Anita Gattis, Grinstead's sister.

Maurice Godwin, who, according to his Web site, holds a doctorate in investigative psychology from the University of Liverpool, said he learned of the existence of a witness during a recent trip to Ocilla.

Godwin said the witness saw a man near a black Chevrolet pickup truck parked on the grass at Grinstead's house the night she was last seen, Oct. 22.

"The person standing by the truck said something very rude to the witness," Godwin said Wednesday.

The man threatened the witness, Godwin said, which might be the reason that person hasn't come forward.

Godwin said he has talked to the best friend of the witness and plans to contact the witness today.

"This person is legitimate. I can tell you that," Godwin said.

Godwin said he was triple-checking his information before turning over the witness's name to investigators, he said.

He expects to notify GBI Special Agent Gary Rothwell before the week is out, he said.

"When I get my ducks in a row ... I'm going to shoot them some information," Godwin said.

Rothwell would not comment Wednesday on the specifics of the investigation or any witnesses.

"It's a very complex investigation," Rothwell said. "We still have a lot of resources devoted to this investigation, and we still believe it's a solvable case."

As the investigation nears the six-month mark, Gattis said Godwin's new development "gives me hope that at some point justice would be served."

Godwin agreed to take the case without pay about six weeks ago, when he first traveled to Ocilla and gathered evidence at Grinstead's home, he said.

There have been two other witnesses who reported seeing a dark-colored pickup at Grinstead's house, including one man who called the tip line Wednesday, Gattis said.

"It really sounds like somebody she knew," Gattis said. "It's just kind of a bizarre thing, but then again, this whole thing has been bizarre. We're just waiting to see what comes of it."

In the meantime, Gattis said she spends every weekend looking for her sister.

Over the Easter weekend, searchers drained a pond looking for evidence, she said.

Two psychics, Carla Baron and John Oliver, also have taken an interest in the case, Gattis said.

Baron and Oliver filmed an episode about the Grinstead site for "Haunting Evidence," a television series scheduled to begin airing on Court TV in June, according to Baron's Web site.

In the meantime, anyone with information is asked to call the tip line at (229) 468-0667 or visit the Tara Command Center at its new location at 121 North Cherry St. in Ocilla, Gattis said.

"We feel like we're really moving in a positive direction right now," Gattis said.

-- Let us hope this case comes to a conclusion soon. Blessings for the family.

Good weekend to all here.

This would be after 11 pm Saturday night. Prior to this she was last seen by her friends she had dinner with a few blocks away when she went home at 11. Now we have this talk of all these witnesses that night, where there was none before.

I wonder if the sister has talked to this person. It sounds like it would have to be one of Tara's neighbors.
