Holy cow. I looked at a map of the Ocilla area to see what they had to search, and I will post what I saw below. Nothing but swamp around Ocilla. Wonderful.
I mapped the route between Tara's and her ex's homes. Looking at this I will amend my conjecture. I was thinking of driving out into the country and back as anyone who lived in that area of Tara would have to do when I suggested her car was used to do it.
With a 30 mile drive to Douglas, my thoughts are that Tara was hidden south to southeast of Ocilla on a southerly swing south and east to Douglas.
Why is her car unlocked and the seat moved? It's possible he was thinking of driving her car off the road into one of those ponds to try to make it look like an accident, I wouldn't be surprised at all, but realized he wouldn't be able to get back to his car at her house without a risky hike.
I think he wanted to try to throw people off much more than just hiding her body in the woods on the way home. Suicide was his angle, and as long as Tara isn't found it's an angle that can keep being played.

rd: This appears to be a rather long, swampy route to be searched. I'm sure as you stated LE did a good job of the search. This case is becoming baffling also.
Have you heard or watched any further news on this. I have not seen any updates, but have not been tuned in, nor have read anything.
Do you know anything about poor Tara and what is going on?
I'm praying that something will break soon. I do not know what to make of this story anymore.
Just checking with you or anyone on some updates.
Have a great weekend?
Thoughts are with Tara and her family. Too many woman going missing and it appears there are alot of Southern gals going missing as of late.

Hi Goz! The search ended after two weeks, and now they wait. It will take a turtle hunter to turn up a skull someday apparently. I did see something about private searches continuing, but LE is officially finished for now.
I looked at the map I posted above and wondered how well all that can be searched, especially in all that water. I saw the quotes from the sheriff and realized they said they said all along when they would be done, and they were.
Clearly this was a prescheduled, two week timebased ending, not a "we've searched everywhere in the county, nowhere else to search" based ending. And of course nothing says that she wasn't taken out of the county.
But unlike the DC and Aruba police in Chandra's and Natalee's cases, I have faith this town will not stop working on finding one of their own.

I took a drive up to Ocilla today to look around. It's about four hours from Jacksonville. I drove all the major routes south and southeast between Ocilla and Douglas, 32, 129, 90, and 158.
It's swampy ponds in places, but not nearly as swampy as the map leads one to believe. Every pond has a house next to it, and all the roads are sparsely populated with small farms but populated. The roads are very quiet. Even on a Sunday afternoon I meandered slowly along in my old jeep and only one pickup truck came up on me and passed me. Saw very few people outside. It's a very quiet place.
I had time to think while I looked at what someone who wants to hide a body would be looking at. The more I thought about it, the less I like the idea that someone tried to hide Tara's body far off in the wilderness. Most roads off these small highways are red clay dirt roads, but they're lined with country homes. Even if it was early in the morning, people are going to notice a car going out such quiet dirt roads.
My focus was on 129 south of Tara's house. I took a look at her house , saw the carport I saw on Greta's show, but some other car was parked there in the carport and another car was parked across the front yard in front of the front steps, but no one was outside.
Anyway, Tara lived just a couple of blocks down 129 from the courthouse and just a couple of blocks on down 129 is the county jail. Her house is about three blocks in from 129.
The jail caught my eye. Her ex being a former Ocilla cop and her living only a few blocks from the jail, and the jail surrounded by heavy woods with a creek that runs along it and under 129 across to the other side and on into woods on that side was eerily spooky to me.
The more I thought about it, the more I thought that someone who was setting her up as suicidal would not take her far from her house. They night even slip a pair of sweatpants on her and drag her off back along the creek just before you get to the jail to make it look like she was attacked while jogging.
For that I can see her car used to drive her a few blocks away, drag her into the woods, and then drive back. If her car is seen, it doesn't identify her murderer. It could be argued she was jogging and who knows who murdered her, ala Chandra. Worst case if the car is seen, the murderer can leave her car there and sneak back to the house a few blocks away and get into his car and drive away.
A poor second choice is dropping her off the bridge over the Sapilla River on 158, but I'm sure overpasses were well searched and there was a fisherman there today, so although easiest to do it's also easiest to search.
I think the closer she is to her house, the more questions there are about what could have happened to her, so I won't be surprised if Tara is found just a few blocks away off of 129, maybe along the creek that runs by the jail. Then again, maybe they have searched that very well and it's not the case.
Here's the difference between disappearing in a small town in Georgia and disappearing in Washington, D.C. The Ocilla police chief, Billy Hancock, was quoted last week in The Herald-Leader, "We still need volunteer searchers. We hope to finish this thing up by mid-week. We appreciate all the help from the public safety community and volunteers. We encourage them to keep their eyes open for anything they may see."
The DC police turned away volunteers, even offers of help from local professional search organizations with dogs were turned away. Not in Ocilla, Georgia. At least Tara has that.

Rd: you are a beautiful person! I don't think I can add more. This is what I would have done, but you, you, you, are wonderful. Thank you for being a great person, and a one I can be proud to say I know:

Also, it blows my mind it is not all swamp area there but by the media coverage it appeared that way. Glad you put that to rest.
I'd like to mention, I did not know that it was only 4 hours from Jacksonville, I guess my trip meter is a tad bit off from years of doing the routes between GA/FL and NC.
back to your coverage of this wonderful journey to search.

Hum I find that of interest rd, considering there is very widespread rumor this is one of the causes of her death. Many are going with that theory. Close to home as opposed to far may make sense in a way. And dragging to one of the swamps may just prove too much of a hassle and as you said---with all the country area, one might be noticed.
-----^Also, I will make a correction- I did see it noted he was a former PO, it had been up in the air on a few stories but I heard or read it confirmed. Thanks for alerting me too.
I'm hoping your conclusion is correct. The bridge may be a theory too, but as stated, it usually easy to find a body thrown out into an area as such.
(except if you are in denial as WAYNE WILLIAMS- sidenote- who I don't believe is innocent, maybe of some of the child killings)!
Thank you rd for the rundown. You are an asset and I'm glad to see you did this search.
Peace to you sir.
Prayers for Tara and her family. Hoping we get news soon.

This was posted on Tara's site, and I also saw it on AMW-- which I will post their link as to the coverage.
Observing Tara's Birthday
A candlelight ceremony and birthday celebration was held at Tara's home tonight (11/14) to honor her and her 31st birthday. It was a touching event - with a glaringly absent guest of honor. We will post pictures of the event on Tuesday
I didn't see the pics yet.

A day after the end of the official ground search for a missing teacher, her family members announced they plan to continue searching local fields and woods.
Hawkinsville native Tara Grinstead disappeared more than two weeks ago.
Tuesday night law enforcement completed the countywide search. Now Police Chief Billy Hancock says future searches will only take place based on tips.
Citizen searches for Tara are still going on. Family and friends are manning the command center.
Chief Billy Hancock says his crews will search based on new leads. Hancock says the search won't be over until Tara comes home.

Goz, I know you and the others here would do the same thing if you had the opportunity. I just had the misfortune to be close enough to visit this sad site of grief.
I thought it would be farther, but when I checked the map US 1 runs diagonally from Jacksonville straight to Waycross and then US 32 continues through Douglas right to Ocilla. The straight shot there makes it not that far of a drive.
I am reminded of the lottery winner's granddaughter in WV who disappeared with her car found in the driveway of a friend's home, and at least two weeks later she was found wrapped in plastic behind a small building or trailer right there on the property.
That is literally unbelievable, I could only think that she was brought there after the initial search, but then there was the case of two or three boys who everyone was searching for and there they were in a car trunk in the front yard.
I have to tell you, finding disappeared people in the yard after what should be ground zero of the search is a lesson to go back to ground zero and start over. The street ends a block away into woods, woods lie a couple of blocks away along a creek running by the county jail.
I think that's where he hid her. But hopefully her family will find her soon, along with some closure.

I hope you are correct sir. I tend to agree with you. It was interesting how you pointed out the other case too. I hope we see a conclusion to this too.
And once again - I thank you.

COP IS QUIZZED OVER MISSING BEAUTY QUEEN -- WAS TARA HAVING AFFAIR WITH MARRIED OFFICER?
By DON GENTILE
A married policeman bombarded missing beauty queen Tara Grinstead with more than 20 frantic phone calls on the day of her disappearance, The National Enquirer can reveal. In a stunning development, a source revealed that the officer repeatedly phoned Tara in the hours before she vanished from her Georgia home at 11 pm on October 22. "He called her more than 20 times," the source said.
"That's how authorities found out about him. They traced him through the calls.
"The cop is married. Authorities have already spoken to him and his wife. He may have been having a relationship with Tara. Investigators believe he told Tara he was going to leave his wife but backed out on the promise.
"One theory is Tara got angry and threatened to tell his wife about their affair. So she had to be silenced."
A lawyer who has spoken to investigating officers said they had told him numerous messages were left on Tara's answering machine in the hours before her disappearance.
"The calls are from a married man and he's a cop," Thomas Pujadas told The National Enquirer. "I am told police are investigating him."
On the last day she was seen, Tara, 30, a well-loved history teacher in the tiny town of Ocilla, Georgia, was busy helping others as usual. Girls appearing that afternoon in the Miss Sweet Potato Pageant in nearby Fitzgerald came to her home, where she combed and fixed up their hair. Tara was in the pageant in 1998 and won the title of Miss Charisma.
"The girls were so grateful," Tara's good friend Susan Oakley told The National Enquirer. "Then Tara went to the event in the afternoon."
In the early evening, Tara drove to a barbecue at the home of high school principal Troy Davis, eight blocks from her house. Guests noticed that Tara's cell phone kept ringing during the evening.
"She got a bunch of calls," said Susan. "Tara told the guests the calls were from the pageant girls thanking her for doing their hair."
Tara drove home at 11 pm. Police were called on Monday, October 24, when she didn't show up for classes. Tara had vanished and investigators found little to go on when they searched Tara's home.

wow, Goz. The first thought that came to mind was that the ex-cop ex-boyfriend was said to have been running around that night with a cop.
What's the odds that that is the cop that NE is talking about? I'd say pretty good. Ocilla isn't very large, about 7,000 if I remember right. They can't have many cops to start with.
I wrote the better part of two chapters in Murder on a Horse Trail making sense of the twenty phone calls that NE and others said Chandra made just before she disappeared, but now Tara is said to have been on the receiving end.
The results were still the same.
I was looking for some parsing loopholes in what they're saying to see if it could be her ex, but there's no loopholes. They say he is married and the cops talked to his wife.
Let's see now. She was said to be indicating she might call the parents of an 18 year old her ex was secretly dating, and now indications she might call the wife of a married boyfriend because he wouldn't leave his wife.
That lines right up with Chandra talking to her mother and the father of an 18 year old, at least when the boyfriend was dating her, who was warning her about her married boyfriend, a married boyfriend who also just happened to not be leaving his wife as he had promised her.
I'll be very interested to see if this is real or whether they picked up an old Chandra article and recycled it. It reads that way to me. Almost like an inside joke. But this is no joke.
What do you think?

I checked for any news on the search for Tara, didn't see anything but saw on http://findtara.com that they are still searching and asking for volunteers this Saturday and or Sunday. Volunteers also search on weekday afternoons at 3:30 pm.
It's certainly a well coordinated volunteer effort. You couldn't ask for more in an effort to find her.
I made a more detailed street map of the area around Tara's home and will post it a little later. If everything goes well I'll try to make another trip there soon and volunteer to search and take some pictures. Hopefully they'll find Tara before that.

Hello Rd, I'm glad to hear you may make another trip, that would be wonderful, and I look forward to seeing the map. I don't think I have been through that area but it is possible.
Yes, the volunteer effort continues which is great and it does seem very well organized. Thankful for so many caring people giving their time.
I did find some more information that will prove worthy to you and all here.
From the website: http://www.findtara.com/index.htm
Texas Equusearch
Local law enforcement and the GBI are consulting with Tim Miller of Texas Equusearch on the search for Tara. They hope to be able to utilize the expertise of the TES group to move the search for Tara forward.
This should prove to be helpful I'm sure. (See next link)
