A lot of information in this article. First off, the obvious about the mailing being illegal, as pointed out by Don Langman, which brings up another point- Don Langman's position....how about a couple more witnesses for Dunne's case?

Recall that Don Langman's son, who had worked for Condit when Chandra went missing, high-tailed it back to California in a hurry?

I'm betting that the Langmans know something that they could contribute to Dunnes' attorney.

Another point is the fact that Cadee and Chad keep bringing up the same old material that was mentioned in their mailing about Cardoza:

Quote:
"If this district elects Dennis Cardoza, it will elect someone who cares about one thing: Dennis Cardoza," reads the letter. "He is neither Democrat, Republican or independent, but an opportunist that would use anything or anyone to get elected."

Evidently, they have no new material. What was that that Cadee said about Dunne should do research?

Rep. Gary Condit's children have thrust themselves into the race to succeed their father by writing an angry letter urging people to vote against Democrat Dennis Cardoza.

Addressed to "Friends, neighbors and fellow Democrats," the one-page letter from Chad and Cadee Condit began arriving in mailboxes Wednesday. Dated Oct. 10, it accuses Cardoza of betraying their father by challenging him in the March primary for the 18th Congressional District seat. It also alleges wrongdoing by Cardoza over the years.

"If this district elects Dennis Cardoza, it will elect someone who cares about one thing: Dennis Cardoza," reads the letter. "He is neither Democrat, Republican or independent, but an opportunist that would use anything or anyone to get elected."

A Cardoza aide blasted the letter as "riddled with false accusations."

"It's disappointing and sad that Chad and Cadee have had to stoop to this level," Cardoza spokesman Steve Haro said. "They're stuck in March, when the rest of the world is living in October. It's time to move on."

Cardoza, an assemblyman from Merced who once was a close ally of Condit, defeated the Ceres Democrat in the primary. His victory followed a monthslong scandal over the congressman's relationship with former federal intern Chandra Levy of Modesto.

Condit, 54, has not denied reports that he had an affair with Levy. She was last heard from May 1, 2001, in an e-mail to her parents. The 24-year-old's remains were found in a Washington, D.C., park a little more than a year later.

The contest to succeed Condit has become one of the most competitive in the country, pitting Cardoza against state Sen. Dick Monteith, R-Modesto.

Since the primary, the Monteith campaign has proclaimed the support of many people who voted for Condit. But a Monteith spokesman denied Wednesday that the campaign had any connection with the letter.

"Absolutely not," Monteith campaign manager Bob Rucker said, adding, "Gary was Dennis' mentor, and Dennis stabbed him in the back. Beyond that, nothing would surprise me at this stage."

The letter does not mention Monteith. But some Democratic leaders said they think the Republican's campaign knows more about the letter than it acknowledges.

"Somewhere in all of this, they would have checked with (Monteith) before they did it," said Sandra Lucas, a member of the Stanislaus County Democratic Central Committee.

Haro said the Cardoza campaign will not ask Monteith to denounce the letter. He also predicted that the letter will backfire. "People will see through their bitterness," he said.

Before their letter became public Wednesday, the Condit children largely had kept out of the public eye since their father's defeat. While mostly criticizing Cardoza, the letter also defends Condit.

"You can say whatever you want about Gary Condit, and believe us it has all been said, but you know as well as we do that Gary Condit is a good public servant," it reads.

Chad and Cadee Condit were unavailable for comment Wednesday, as was a spokesman for Gary Condit.

It couldn't be determine Wednesday how many letters were mailed. A bulk-mail permit number, which is used for sending 200 or more pieces, is registered to Cadee Condit.

The letter says that Chad and Cadee Condit paid for it. But under campaign law, only registered campaign committees can send out such mailings, Modesto political adviser Don Langman said. The letter also lacks a return address, which is another legal requirement for political mailings, he said.

"They may be well-known, but they're not like Santa Claus," Langman said. "This violates, as far as I can see, regulations for mass mailing. It's an illegal piece."

Langman, who frequently handles bulk mailings for candidates, estimated that each letter cost about 45 cents, including printing and postage.

Since April, Chad Condit has controlled a political action committee that his father created nearly three years ago. The Justice PAC paid the Condit children a total of $100,000 for campaign consulting services the first six months of the year.

The committee did not file a quarterly finance report due Oct. 7, according to the secretary of state's office.

I thought it was interesting as well, Jane.

At this point, I would imagine most people who have real inside info, don't want to get involved at all. Even to the confirming of information such as contained in the article above.
