Police are looking for a 16-year-old Palacios girl who has been missing since Jan. 16 when she left her home for a trip to the store.

Mariana Arellano was last seen a week ago when she told her mother she was going to the store for some school supplies and then to visit a friend — she never came home.

The Palacios Police Department is in charge of the search for the girl and have enlisted the help of other agencies, including the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office and the Houston Police Department.

When police were first notified that the girl was missing, she was labeled as a runaway, because of a mix-up in translation from Spanish to English, the family thinks.

Her status now has been changed to a missing person and an Amber Alert will be issued soon.

Mariana’s family describes her as a typical teenager — she was outgoing and rarely in trouble at home.

She did not smoke or drink, and she had never threatened to run away, so when she disappeared that evening, her family knew something was wrong.

An earlier conversation between her sister, Eblia and a man who called the house for Mariana, alerted the family to a possible bigger problem.

A week or two prior to Mariana’s disappearance, her sister answered a call from a 27-year-old Houston man.

He asked for Mariana, and when he was told she wasn’t home from school, he mentioned that he had met her through an Internet chat room.

Eblia warned the man that her sister was only 16, and that he needed to stay away from her.

She hung up on him when he started asking for information about her.

When Mariana got home, Eblia confronted her about the man.

The girl told her sister she had been chatting with people on the Internet.

Eblia told their mother what was happening, and they thought the situation was handled.

However, Eblia later found out Mariana had continued conversations with her online friends.

Talking to Mariana’s friends alerted Eblia about a conversation her sister had with a man in Houston who said he wanted Mariana to live with him.

On the evening of her disappearance, Mariana headed to her friend’s home around 5:30 p.m.

When she got to her house, her friend’s brother told her that the girl was not there, so she headed to the store.

There is surveillance video of Mariana walking in and out of the store, but she did not buy anything, said Eblia.

Mariana is 5-feet 4-inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds.

She has black hair and black eyes, and was last seen wearing a black jacket, jeans and tennis shoes.

Family and friends are making flyers and scouring the town for leads.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Palacios Police Department at (361) 972-3112.

A 16-year-old Palacios girl who disappeared after a trip to the store on Jan. 16 is safely back home with her family.

Mariana Arellano returned home on her own Saturday night and was brought to the Palacios police station at about 7:30 p.m.

It appeared that the girl had been in Houston, said Palacios police Sgt. Jacob Whitell.

He added that the girl had apparently hitched a ride.

Palacios police are not looking for anyone in Houston, but they are still looking into the case to determine if any further action will be taken.

The girl was reported missing by her family after she left her home for the store and a visit to a friend’s house on Jan. 16 and did not return.

Family members did not know where the girl had disappeared to, but they thought she may have been with a 27-year-old Houston man she met in an Internet chat room.

An Amber Alert was never issued for the missing girl, because she did not meet three of the five necessary criteria, Whitell said.

Well this is one lucky young woman, whom very well have been seriously hurt, the hazzards of meeting someone on the internet if you are young cannot be understated, the hazzards of such impulsive behavior should be taught as part of the school ciriculum.....as the dangers cannot be overstated! Hopefully this young woman had learned her lesson, and that she is not allowed out until she is 19. I feel for her parents and the horrors that they must have gone through..
