Team Amber News: More FBI Agents To Investigate Missing Cleveland Girl

Gina DeJesus Disappeared 5 Weeks Ago

CLEVELAND -- Investigators in the case of missing 14-year-old Gina DeJesus are expected to announce new changes in the investigation Friday.

Gina disappeared five weeks ago. She was last seen at West 105th Street and Lorain Avenue while she was walking home from school.

Cleveland police will announce today that more FBI agents are being assigned to Gina's case, with the hope of getting some answers.

Fifteen agents have been investigating her case and taking every lead very seriously, NewsChannel5 reported.

Police said she made a call from a payphone April 2 and then vanished.

Gina is 5 foot 3 inches, 135 pounds and was last wearing a tan shirt with a white sweater, black pants and a light blue jacket.

Anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland police at (216) 621-1234 or Crime Stoppers at (216) 252-7463. Your anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers could be worth $2,000.

Something strange going on. She was walking home instead of taking the bus. She made a phone call. Had a problem with a bus connection and called home, or who did she call?

Search widens for missing west side girl
Reported by Obie Shelton
Tuesday, April 06, 2004

CLEVELAND -- People all over greater Cleveland are taking part in the search for a 14-year-old girl who's been missing since Friday afternoon.

The FBI and Cleveland Police are heading up the search, but citizens are also doing all they can.

Georgina "Gina" DeJesus lives On Cleveland's west side, and was last seen near West 105 And Lorain Avenue.

But green fliers with her picture are being spread on the east and the west side as far away as Solon. They are being posted in car windows.

Many of the people passing out the posters don't even know the missing girl.

She's just over 5 feet tall and weighs 140 pounds.

She was last seen walking home alone from Wilbur Wright Middle School Friday afternoon. That's unusual for her to do.

Her parents say they've repeatedly warned her about people on the street who might try to harm her.

They say they worry because although she may have listened to them, she is not street smart.

Her father has gotten a few calls from other parents who've gone through the same thing, but there are no new leads.

Anyone with information should call Cleveland detectives at (216) 623-5118 or the FBI at (216) 522-1400.

Missing girl spurs community safety effort

Lila J. Mills and Michael Sangiacomo
Plain Dealer Reporters

Two Cleveland councilmen pledged Monday that City Council would meet with school officials and police to come up with "ways to protect our children" as the hunt continues for a missing 14-year-old girl.

Georgina DeJesus, known as Gina, was last seen by a friend about 2:30 p.m. Friday at West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue. Gina had $1.25 to take a bus to her home on West 71st Street, but she gave 50 cents to a friend to call her mother to ask if she could go to Gina's house. The mother said no. Gina then started walking home alone.

Doesn't look good. Carlie Brucia was kidnapped from a street only a few months ago. The wolves have struck again to take the life of another lamb.

I said surely we cannot wait for it to happen again, but we did. We monitor neither the wolves nor the lambs. Is this something we're supposed to get used to, or will we ever do anything about it?

There seems to be much interest in psychics in this case, which is a bad sign as this mean there is very litte evidence of not only Gina's disappearance, but another young woman six blocks away from where Gina made the phone call.

The map I viewed on line, lost the url, under a search on Google, Gina DeJesus Cleveland and came up with scant information, she has vanished without a trace. Gina's school looks like a 1945-55 era fine two story high school in a residential neighbourhood, Gina's house is about a mile away or so, in a less residential area. There is a park close by where a search goes on. There is a strange man that was noticed in the area in a light car, hispanic, in his thirties.

One would suspect that Gina would only get in the car with someone she knew? This kind of rules out this dude, unless of course he just nabbed her off the street, possible. The big deal is wether or not Gina went to a park? Short cut? there are two highways that pass near the area Gina was travelling. This makes for allot of traffic and easy access onto freeways.

The impression that I get is someone who was known to Gina, Resturant, store, something like this...someone who might not be working at 300pm.
Was there a place in a park where teens meet, somewhere that Gina walked by daily. There had to be some boys in the hood that may have wanted to date her...the impression I get is that she was tricked, and killed. Although in the strange world we live in anything is possible, someone could have her locked up? This person she sees often? I get the impression that there is someone that the friends of Gina have forgotten, someone they never noticed. Someone who doesn't stand out. The construction guy or truck driver that gives the girls the look.

Wonder if there are any persons the teens who are missing might have known in common, friend of a friend. Will have to research more, and will post the information here. A person at the school? A person who hags out at the telephone that Gina used?

I guess until a body is found there is hope that these women might still be alive!

Two West Side girls just the most recent to vanish
By Amy Starnes

So No One Forgets
Friends and relatives have built a shrine for the missing Gina DeJesus.
One year ago today , Amanda Berry walked out of a Burger King and disappeared into a bustling West Side Cleveland street. The last her family heard from her was a short cell phone call to say she had a ride and she'd call back. She never did.

Tomorrow she turns 18 years old.

Faded posters showing the petite sandy-blond are still nailed to light poles up and down Lorain Avenue near the Burger King where she worked at West 110th. Now, they are accompanied by new yellow ribbons and the smiling face of another girl — Georgina DeJesus, a 14-year-old who vanished earlier this month while walking home from school. She was last seen just five blocks from where Amanda disappeared.

Hundreds of police officers, sheriff's deputies, FBI investigators and volunteers have been combing the area looking for Georgina and any clues that might provide a fresh lead on Amanda. Searches and vigils have been carried on the nightly news. And America's Most Wanted featured their stories.

But Gina and Mandy, as family and friends refer to them, are only two of Northeast Ohio's lost children.

kate, interesting info. My understanding is that Gina normally rode the bus home but loaned money to a friend to make a phone call and so walked home that day. I don't think she walked home very often based on the way the article read.

No rd, this was an uncommon occurance that Gina walked home, however the parents implied that they often old their daughter, so it seems as though she may have walked home sometime.

Amanda Berry was last scene walking home from her job at Burger King on West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue in Cleveland.

There are conflicting report of the address where Gina was last seen, one says 117th street, and Lorain Drive, another said, 105 streets which seems more responsible.

Gina walked a diverse neighborhood
Saturday, April 10, 2004
Lila J. Mills
Plain Dealer Reporter
Many school days, Gina DeJesus winds her way through bustling commercial areas, students from public and parochial schools, and city bus stops.

It's a route Gina, the missing middle-school student last seen April 2, takes for almost 40 blocks from Wilbur Wright Middle School to her West 71st Street home.

The neighborhood includes active block clubs, racial diversity and churches.

But there is a shadow on these streets, some residents and community leaders say, that emerges as evening falls: a chronic drug and prostitution problem fueled by access from Interstate 90.

These bustling streets are, it seems, a perfect place for a young girl to vanish.

Gina was last seen near West 105th Street and Lorain Avenue. Police and FBI agents have been scouring the neighborhood, and on Friday two investigators from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children began working with authorities.

NCMEC changed Gina's status from runaway to missing this week. Bob O'Brien, deputy director of the center's Missing Children Division, said Gina's case raises concern because she has no history of running away. Even if she did run away, O'Brien said, she still could be in danger.

"We look for runaways with just as much enthusiasm as we look for somebody who's been abducted, because either way the child is at risk," he said.

Gina - described as an outgoing, funny seventh-grader - crossed three city council wards to and from school. She sometimes walked along Lorain Avenue to Clark Avenue; other times, she walked from Lorain to Denison Avenue, then home, police said. Generally, schoolmates say they don't feel unsafe, although sometimes men drive by and honk at them.

The area is diverse, and more than half of its residents own their homes, as Gina's parents do, council member Jay Westbrook said.

The area has evolved from an Eastern European enclave into an amalgamation of Hispanics, Asians, Middle Easterners and blacks, council members said. Lorain Avenue is enjoying a modest commercial renaissance. The avenue, bolstered by Westown Shopping Plaza, includes markets, clothing stores and restaurants - fast-food and family-owned.

[snip]

At the corner where Gina was last seen, West 105th Street and Lorain Avenue, yellow ribbons and missing posters hung on telephone poles and at a corner pay phone. Nearly 100 people gathered for a vigil Friday night, including teens, adults with infants in strollers, senior citizens, politicians and community organizers.

Police blocked off West 105th to protect the pedestrians in the busy intersection who surrounded Gina's parents and siblings to pray. Some of those gathered handed out fliers to passing cars.

"The best thing people can do is to keep showing their faith and pray really hard," said DeJesus family spokeswoman, Sylvia Col?

Community activist Khalid Samad led the vigil. He was active in the search for Shakira Johnson, the girl whose body was found five weeks after she disappeared from a September 2003 block party.

"We believe in total community involvement," Samad said to the crowd. "We know that without the community, this situation will not be solved. We just want to bring this baby home."

The area has been touched by its share of horrific crimes. In February, police said a crack-addicted man killed a customer during a botched robbery at Dimitri's Family Restaurant at West 110th Street and Lorain. Across the street, teenager Amanda Berry disappeared after leaving work at Burger King almost a year ago. Posters seeking answers to her disappearance share telephone poles with Gina's. Amanda's posters are beginning to yellow with age.

Westbrook, who represents neighborhoods farther east on Lorain, said there is a "disturbing and unfortunate" drug and prostitution problem that has surfaced in the last five years.

"It's near the interstate," he said. "Word gets out that's where you can purchase sex and drugs."

Burglaries, drugs and prostitution "feed out of each other," said Police Commander Gary Gingell of the area's First Police District. "It's a vicious circle."

Lila J. Mills
Plain Dealer Reporter
Mayor Jane Campbell and a handful of Cleveland's leaders gathered Tuesday at the home of a missing 14-year-old girl to comfort her family and talk about ways to find her.

Georgina DeJesus, known as Gina, disappeared Friday afternoon as she walked to her West 71st Street home from Wilbur Wright Middle School on Parkhurst Drive. Gina is a seventh- grader in special-education classes.

[snip]

For the family, Tuesday was a day of mixed emotions seeking comfort, reaching out for faith, staying concerned.

At the news conference, Gina's family stood alongside police and city officials as Gina's disappearance stretched into its fourth day.

"Gina's a darling, darling young woman," relative Sylvia Colon said. "She's just a bundle of energy. . . . I know that our dear, dear Gina is not a runaway."

Earlier, Gina's father, Felix, said he has been finding comfort in churches down the block and around the country - from California to Memphis - whose members have said they are praying for Gina.

"It's been hard," he said. Family members have been catching sleep as they can, he added.

DeJesus said he is concerned that Cleveland middle-schoolers like Gina must ride public transportation or walk to and from school if they live less than two miles from school.

He also said the family would like changes made to Amber Alert guidelines so the alert can be used in cases like Gina's. Police did not sound the alert in Gina's case because, as with the disappearance of 11-year-old Shakira Johnson last September, no one saw the girl being abducted. Shakira's body was found in a desolate field a month after she disappeared from a block party.

While Gina's family kept hope, law enforcement agencies investigated. Police and the FBI followed dozens of leads and interviewed neighbors and friends. They checked abandoned homes and vacant lots. And FBI agents used a privately owned bloodhound to track Gina's scent.

The dog followed her scent to West 104th Street and Lorain Avenue - one block from where a friend last saw her. The area is relatively busy and home to the Westown Community Development Corporation, a barber shop, an after-school computer center and a pub.

Tom Keating works at Westown, where a flier about Gina's disappearance is posted in the window alongside one about missing 17-year-old Amanda Berry. Amanda disappeared a year ago April 21 from West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue, just a few blocks away.

Keating and others said they didn't notice anything unusual Friday. "Just after 2 p.m. a lot of kids walk through" the area, he said, "but there was nothing out of the ordinary that day."

She was last seen across the street from where Amanda Berry was last seen a year ago April 21. Amanda, 17, was leaving her job at the Burger King restaurant at West 110th and Lorain

I read where she was tracked to 104 W Street. and Lorain.

The employees of the business along this route.... There would be allot of food workers getting off at this time, those who worked the lunch hour would be quiting around 2:00-2:30 pm, restuarant and pup. Then back again for the supper time at 5 thereabouts.

Because the search has been expanded and that Gina was tracked to a certain street, says that she went into a house near there, or was picked up in a car, or she went into the burger king or somewhere to buy a soda, she has a dollar left from her bus money.

It seems that the walk was under two miles, it does look quite a way. There is reference in the articles that some of the Youth cut through on Clark Street. The hound used lost her scent at 104th street,
a pup, after school computer centre.

It mentions special education? Wonder if Gina was challenged or if she was gifted? Gina school is descripted as a middle school. And that she was in grade 7 or grade 8. These factors about her do not tell us of a girl who necessarily had the street smarts. My Son was very impressionable at this age. Seems as though Gina entered a store and went out driving or she accepted a drive or was napped off the street?

Chandra was last determined to be infront of her apartment when she went missing. Are there women out there literally being napped off the streets, and off paths in woods and parks.

Seems that the Amber Alert call was not taken seriously by the Police. Also that the children of the second schools and others are required to find there own transportation to school, this neighbourhood is not one that young children should have to walk to in order to get to school. High School perhaps, but middle school should have better policies for protecting their children's safety to and from school.

This must just be devasting for the community, all the Youth are likely scared out of their wits. And rightly so, however, there should be someway to engage the youth in order to make them more street wise, an have plenty of people they can talk to whom they trust. Hopefully the community will tract down the person responsible for Gina gone missing.
