I guess bad news couldn't stay quiet for too long. At least we have a surveillance tape of Audrey leaving her apartment. What a novel concept.

Police 'puzzled' by disappearance of UW student
'It's a very, very weird case'

MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) -- A university student who was the victim of a baffling attack in February now has disappeared, and police and volunteers were searching for clues Tuesday.

Audrey R. Seiler, 20, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, was last seen early Saturday near her off-campus apartment.

A surveillance tape from her apartment building showed her leaving without her coat or purse, and her door was left open, police Officer Jennifer Krueger said Tuesday. She also left her car behind.

Police spokesman Larry Kamholz said there is little information about where Seiler, of Rockford, Minnesota, was headed.

"We are very puzzled by it," Kamholz said Tuesday on NBC's "Today." "It's not typical of Audrey."

Kamholz said Seiler also was walking near her residence when she was attacked on February 1. She was struck from behind by an unknown assailant and knocked unconscious. She was then moved about a block but was not sexually assaulted. Nothing was taken from her.

Police have no evidence linking Seiler's disappearance to the attack, Krueger said.

Kamholz said Seiler had no idea who may have wanted to harm her.

"It's a very, very weird case," Kamholz said.

Seiler's uncle, Scott Charlesworth-Seiler, said his niece was also baffled by the attack.

"That wasn't something she had any explanation for," he told WISC-TV in Madison.

Police have been following up on telephone tips while volunteers, many from Seiler's hometown, have searched the area around campus for clues. Fliers were posted at stores, dormitories and apartment buildings.

The university e-mailed 46,000 users of its computer system to appeal for help and established a Web site.

UW-Madison Provost Peter Spear said the school also offered its counseling services to her family and to students, faculty and staff who know her.

Several other college-age students from Minnesota have disappeared in recent years.

Last November, University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, was allegedly kidnapped from a mall parking lot in Grand Forks, North Dakota. A Crookston, Minnesota, man has been charged with kidnapping but no body has been found.

Erika Dalquist, 21, of Brainerd, Minnesota, was reported missing in October 2002 after she left a Brainerd bar. St. John's University student Josh Guimond, 20, was reported missing in November 2002 after leaving an apartment in Collegeville, Minnesota.

i find that attack back in february really disturbing, especially since the attack itself was so odd ... i almost get a sense that someone was following this girl around and he was intent on tormenting her. if that is the case, i shudder to think what might be happening to her right now, or maybe has already happened. i agree with rd that having a surveillance tape could make a big difference here ... good thing audrey wasn't living in washington and dating a sleazy politician, or there'd be no hope for her at all.

For starters, the police wouldn't be puzzled, they'd be saying there's no crime, let's put out pictures of her in weird looking wigs and see where she ran off to without her purse, her id, without anything except of course her wigs.

No body, no crime, at least in Washington when they're protecting a sleazy politician.

Parents pledge to find missing student
Audrey Seiler disappeared Saturday
CNN
March 31, 2004

MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) -- Parents of a missing University of Wisconsin student vowed to find her Wednesday, four days after she vanished from her off-campus apartment without a coat or purse.

Investigators said they are sorting through hundreds of tips about Audrey R. Seiler's disappearance. A surveillance tape showed the 20-year-old leaving her building early Saturday, and her door was left open, police said.

"Audrey, we are looking for you," her mother, Stephanie Seiler, said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "We will find you, Audrey, and we are going to bring you home safe."

Volunteers from Seiler's hometown of Rockford, Minnesota, slogged through marshes around campus Tuesday, while investigators scoured phone records and searched apartments for any clue into her disappearance.

"We don't have a clue why Audrey left" her apartment, her father, Keith Seiler, told ABC. "We assume that Audrey had a very good reason for leaving. Audrey wouldn't do anything without a good reason. She thought out all of her moves."

Madison Police Capt. Luis Yudice said investigators were trying to determine whether Seiler's disappearance was related to a February 1 attack that left her unconscious when she was struck from behind by an unknown assailant.

Investigators were reviewing files of sex offenders and others with a criminal history living in the area.

"We are methodically looking into every possible reason for her disappearance," Yudice said.

Her uncle, Scott Charlesworth-Seiler, said his niece had no idea who may have wanted to harm her and believed the attack was random.

"Audrey was worried after having been attacked and, as a result, was more careful to walk with friends and make sure she was safe," he said.

Volunteers, many from Seiler's hometown, searched the University of Wisconsin Arboretum, a large wooded area south of campus. Police also have used search-and-rescue dogs, planes and boats in the search.

Last November, University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin was kidnapped from a mall parking lot in Grand Forks, North Dakota. A Minnesota man has been charged with abducting her. She is feared dead, but no body has been found.

Audrey Seiler disappeared Saturday

MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) -- A missing University of Wisconsin student was found alive Wednesday, four days after she vanished from her off-campus apartment without a coat or purse, according to a news report.

Madison police would not immediately confirm they had located Audrey Seiler, 20, but officer Chris Paulson told her friends and family that Seiler "is fine," the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported on its Web site.

Paulson did not say where or how Seiler was found, but said police are looking for an armed suspect in connection with the disappearance, the newspaper said.

A surveillance tape showed the 20-year-old leaving her building early Saturday, and her door was left open, police said.

Volunteers from Seiler's hometown of Rockford, Minnesota, slogged through marshes around campus Tuesday, while investigators scoured phone records and searched apartments for any clue into her disappearance.

"Everybody wants you back, Audrey," her mother, Stephanie Seiler, said during a press conference Wednesday morning. "We're not stopping, Audrey, and you can't stop either."

Madison Police Capt. Luis Yudice had said investigators were trying to determine whether Seiler's disappearance was related to a February 1 attack that left her unconscious when she was struck from behind by an unknown assailant.

Her uncle, Scott Charlesworth-Seiler, said his niece had no idea who may have wanted to harm her and believed the attack was random.

Police Release Sketch Of Man In Seiler's Disappearance

Police 'Continue On' With Investigation; Audrey Seiler Found Alive Wednesday

POSTED: 12:12 p.m. EST April 1, 2004
UPDATED: 6:20 p.m. EST April 1, 2004

MADISON, Wis. -- Madison police held a strange news conference Thursday to announce they "are continuing on" with the investigation into the disappearance of University of Wisconsin student Audrey Seiler, who was found Wednesday.

Assistant police chief Noble Wray read a statement, saying police have interviewed Seiler extensively and are "continuing on" with the investigation.

"Like in any other investigation, there may be inconsistencies," Wray said. "But we are continuing on with this investigation."

Wray said it is "not the Madison Police Department's job to speculate." He appeared to be addressing rumors surrounding the 20-year-old sophomore's disappearance, including a rumor that it was a hoax.

Wray released a composite sketch of a man he called "a suspect."

On Wednesday, Wray described a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall, last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, jeans, and black hat and armed with a gun and a knife.

Police told WISC-TV in Madison they would not have a news conference unless they'd gathered significant information about the case. Police have been very tight-lipped since Seiler walked out of a marsh Wednesday after disappearing early Saturday with no coat, purse or cell phone. She was caught on surveillance tape mysteriously peering out of the lobby window at her apartment before disappearing.

Seiler, of Rockford, Minn., spent the night at an undisclosed location with her parents.

Police theorize the man connected to the disappearance remains in Madison, in a marshy area where Seiler was found about 2 miles from campus where the search is concentrated. There are still a few officers on the scene near the Department of Revenue building, off Rimrock Road. They are reportedly looking for clues, not a particular person at this point.

Police say when they found Seiler on Wednesday, she told them her abductor was still in the area.

Wray told NBC's "Today" show early Thursday that police efforts in the initial moments after the recovery of Seiler focused on establishing a perimeter, based on the woman's information. Police scoured the area with dogs and thermal-scanning equipment.

After appearing reluctant at first to narrow the "missing persons case" to an abduction, police said Wednesday night that Seiler was abducted at gunpoint by a man she didn't know. They say they believe the suspect had a gun even though Seiler did not recall seeing one.

"She was not free to leave," one officer said.

Seiler was treated and released after arriving cold and dehydrated at a Madison hospital. Dr. Philip Schultz said during a late-afternoon news conference that she also had muscle aches from being confined.

Seiler Attacked In February

The area around Seiler's apartment is not known to be particularly dangerous; however, she was attacked by an apparent stranger Feb. 1, WISC-TV in Madison reported.

Detectives are refusing to release specifics of the report, but police told the television station that Seiler was attacked one block from her home.

Police said they don't know if the attack is related to her disappearance. She was approached from behind, struck unconscious and left in a secluded area. Because she was attacked from behind, police do not have a description of the attacker in that case.

"(The attacker) left her unconscious and moved to another location outside, and eventually she was found and she was treated for those injuries," Madison officer Larry Kamholz said.

Her family revealed Tuesday that Audrey considered that a random act.

Seiler's story hit national newscasts Tuesday, with some drawing parallels to the case of Dru Sjodin, the University of North Dakota student who was last seen Nov. 22, 2003, leaving a shopping mall in Grand Forks, N.D. A convicted rapist was ordered earlier this month to stand trial on charges he kidnapped her. Investigators have said they believe Sjodin is dead.

i'm hearing a lot of commentary about audrey recanting her story, then going back to the original story, and a fair amount of speculation that it might all be a hoax ... should be interesting to see how this one turns out, but one way or the other, i'm glad this girl is alive and uninjured.

I wonder what that's all about. It seems closer to Elizabeth Smart than Dru Sjodin at this point, but if she was cold and dehydrated she was not in a mental condition to pull a hoax. That's a serious mental problem.

good point, rd ...

this story has gained enough national attention that i suspect we'll eventually know what all has happened here ... at the moment, the media is moving heaven and earth to be 'fair and balanced' in what they're saying about this, but i don't think they're apt to give up 'til they have a lot more answers than we have right now. i've even heard of rumors to the effect that audrey would 'go to the marsh to relax', and i can assure you that anyone who can 'relax' in a wisconsin marsh in march is a major candidate for someone with mental health problems!!

Audrey Seiler Changes Story
MPD Faces Criticism For Slow Progress

POSTED: 11:25 a.m. EST April 2, 2004
UPDATED: 12:42 p.m. EST April 2, 2004

BREAKING NEWS:University of Wisconsin student Audrey Seiler made up her original abduction story, police said this morning.

Seiler says that she was not abducted from her Regent Street Apartment Saturday; however, she was abducted from another place in the city at knife-point.

The search for Seiler has been the focus of national attention all week. Seiler changed her story when police confronted her with "inconsistencies," said acting Madison Police Chief Noble Wray at a press conference.

"The MPD took a report from Audrey that someone had abducted her by knife-point from her residence and taken her to various areas within the city and eventually held her in a marsh off Rimrock Road in the city of Madison," Wray said. "Audrey reported the she believed her abductor was still in the marsh area and may have a gun ... no suspicious person was located in the marsh area.

"During this investigation, inconsistencies appeared between Audrey's statements, witness' statements and physical evidence. As we continued to investigate, she was presented with these confirmed inconsistencies, that resulted in Audrey admitting she had not been abducted at her apartment at all."

Seiler told police that she just wanted to "be alone."

"Audrey is now reporting the suspect, depicted in the sketch, abducted her from a different location in the city at knife-point," Wray said.

Wray said the department is helping the Seiler family deal with a wide range of emotions and continues to have a positive relationship with them.

Police refused to answer any questions at today's press conference.

WISC-TV reported that no one is in custody at this point.

The Madison Police Department is being criticized for being too careful in this investigation and withholding too much information.

Madison lawyer Stephen Eisenberg told WISC-TV that if Seiler's claim of being abducted is not true, she could face charges.

Thursday: Composite Released

Wray said Thursday night the department would continue to investigate Audrey Seiler's alleged abduction and released a composite sketch of the alleged man.

Wray refused to take any questions at the press conference.

"Like in any other major investigation, there may be inconsistencies," Wray said. "But we are continuing forward with this investigation. It is not our role or the role of police to speculate on the outcome of an investigation until it is completed. The department will continue investigating all reports involving the reported abduction."

Wray told people to continue taking safety precautions, such as locking doors and never walking alone.

Police told WISC-TV in Madison earlier Thursday that they would not have a press conference unless they had "major" information about an alleged abductor.

Police have been very tight-lipped since the University of Wisconsin student walked out of a marsh Wednesday after she seemingly disappeared Saturday.

A Department of Revenue employee who called 911 Wednesday after spotting Seiler in the marshy area near the DOR building is not talking to the media, but WISC-TV in Madison confirmed more information about the 911 call. A high-level police source told WISC-TV that the DOR worker must have talked to Seiler in the marsh. Seiler allegedly told the woman she was a college student and she goes to the marsh to relax. The woman told the 911 dispatcher she also saw Seiler on Monday and Tuesday.

A second high-level police source told WISC-TV that Seiler (pictured left, as she walked to ambulance yesterday) seemed surprised about all the attention.

Seiler, 20, spent Wednesday night at an undisclosed location with her parents after being treated and released at St. Mary's Hospital. Doctors said she was in good health, except for being a little cold. Doctors also said she had muscle soreness from being confined.

Police interviewed Audrey Thursday, trying to piece together what exactly happened between the time she disappeared Saturday and her discovery.

Police theorized Thursday morning that Audrey's abductor remains in Madison, where they continued to search. Seiler told police she was being held hostage by a man with a knife and/or a gun. There were still a few officers on the scene near the DOR building, off Rimrock Road, through noon Thursday. They were reportedly looking for clues, not a suspect at that time.

"A lot of that information is sensitive to the investigation," Larry Kamholz of Madison police said Thursday morning. "We haven't gotten into details with her. We anticipate that will come today. We want to give her time before we start asking questions. When you have someone who's been abducted, and they still are in town with the abductor, a lot of times, that means there're some type of ties here."

Department officials continue to be very tight-lipped.

wow, planned the hoax, wasn't out there all the time after all. She doesn't have a mental problem after all, but she does have a criminal charge problem coming.

I am amazed at how everything was caught on video tape. There must be security cameras everywhere actually recording. :)

Police: Evidence doesn't support abduction claim
Search for suspect dropped
CNN
April 2, 2004

MADISON, Wisconsin (CNN) -- Madison police said they have stopped the search for a suspect in the case of a University of Wisconsin honor student who said she was taken at knifepoint from outside her apartment Saturday, Assistant Police Chief Noble Wray said at a Friday news conference.

"Due to continuing inconsistences ... and a lack of any evidence to support her allegations ... we do not believe that there is a supect at large, period," Wray said.

Wray cited inconsistencies in 20-year-old Audrey Seiler's story that led police to question her claim. For example, the honor student told told police that her captor used duct tape, rope, cold medicine, a gun and a knife to keep her under his control.

Although those items were found in the marsh where she was located, buttressing her account, police obtained videotape Thursday that showed Seiler entering a Madison store and buying those items, he said.

Also, during the time she said she was held captive, two witnesses reported having seen her apparently "walking freely" in different areas of the city, he said.

In addition, during those four days she said she was held captive, someone used her computer to look up a five-day weather forecast and search wooded areas in and around Madison, he said.

Asked whether authorities were planning to press charges against her, Wray said, "I think it's a little bit early for us to say that. We still need to talk to all the detectives."

Earlier Friday, Wray said police asked Seiler about apparent inconsistencies among the physical evidence, her statements to police and those of other witnesses. Seiler then said the abduction had taken place in a different location, according to Wray.

She was found Wednesday and had last been seen leaving her apartment at 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Seiler told police she was abducted at knifepoint by a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall, and last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black hat and jeans.

A security camera recorded Seiler leaving her apartment early Saturday. She left her apartment door open, with her coat and purse inside, police said.

Police spokesman Larry Kamholz said earlier in the week that Seiler's disappearance puzzled investigators because there was no sign of foul play.

In February, Seiler told police she was attacked from behind and knocked unconscious while walking alone outside after midnight. She said she woke up behind a nearby building but wasn't robbed or otherwise hurt, police said. No one was arrested.

Shortly after Seiler was found Wednesday, authorities sealed off the area and began searching streets, parking lots and nearby woods in an unsuccessful attempt to locate a suspect.

Hundreds of volunteers, including many from Seiler's hometown of Rockford, Minnesota, helped search this week.

Seiler was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, and her parents expressed relief that the ordeal was over.

Maybe they mean used her computer account from someone else's computer. To use her computer would mean she came back to her apartment or had a laptop and had it pre-positioned elsewhere ahead of time.

i'm not sure exactly what you mean there, rd ...

but you are a heckuva lot better informed on cyberstuff than i am, so i'll take your word for it ... in light of the fact that she was reportedly seen walking around town, do you think audrey might have gone back to her place without being seen and used the computer there, or maybe that she had a wireless function on a laptop that let her access the internet from wherever she was in the swamp? in any case, this girl is now in a psychiatric facility and her family has said they will have no comments on the matter ... that's not too surprising, since i'm already hearing speculation that her parents could be held responsible for some $70,000 worth of wasted investigative resources.

well, pre-positioned means like having the laptop out in the swamp ahead of time. since she wasn't carrying it when she left. I was thinking that in walking around town she stayed somewhere and that person had a computer. She would log in her ISP but from a friend's computer. To the police it was her logging in as herself, but from a different computer by changing the log in and password.

A wireless laptop would do it, but if she had that she would have used it much more. She only logged in once.

Yeah, the scary thing is she very well may have come back to her apartment. I don't know when she was reported missing, but it would be scary if she was able to come back and leave after she was reported missing and no one knew about it.

That might be what happened, logging in from a friend's computer another, and a wireless laptop probably not.

I really didn't want to think she could come back and leave without being noticed and that she instead used a friend's computer in anothe rpart of town where she was seen walking.

thanks for the explanation, rd ...

my mind is pretty easily boggled by the kind of technology that makes it possible to do stuff like go onto the internet from somewhere like a swamp, whether that's where audrey did that or not. i suspect you're right about her going to a friend's place, but unless the friend wasn't home at the time and didn't know she was there, he or she could also find themselves looking at paying back some of that investigative cost.

even though this turned out to be a hoax, i sure was impressed by the way madison law enforcement took control of this situation and went after the truth in typical down to earth, direct and straightforward midwestern style ... too bad chandra didn't have anyone with that kind of attitude taking the same approach after she disappeared!
