Woman Supposedly Meeting Photographer Missing Foul Play Feared In Disappearance

UPDATED: 9:47 a.m. PST February 20, 2003

LOS ANGELES -- Police asked for the public's help in finding a 21-year-old woman who disappeared on Saturday after saying she was going to meet a photographer in Beverly Hills who told her she had an unusual look.

"A preliminary investigation disclosed that Kristine Louise Johnson was last seen leaving her residence in Santa Monica on Saturday afternoon," Lt. Frank Fabrega said Wednesday. "The circumstances behind her disappearance are suspicious in nature and a cause for great concern to her family and law enforcement.

"When she left, she was possibly en route to see a photographer," Fabrega said.

Johnson last was seen driving away in her 1996 white, Mazda Miata with black convertible top and California license plates 3RSV484. A missing person investigation began on Monday.

"The family and Police Department are very concerned because this is very uncharacteristic of her behavior to not show up to work yesterday and today and no one has seen her since Saturday afternoon," Fabrega said.

"You know as each day goes by you get more frantic," said Johnson's grandmother, Kristine Johnson of Santa Maria.

She said her granddaughter visited her in Santa Maria one week before her disappearance.

"She had a cell phone and she would have been in contact with one of us," she said.

Man this is deja vu all over again. I remember a previous case almost identical to this one shown on Unsolved Mysteries and elsewhere. An aspiring blonde model goes out on a shoot and never comes back. A janitor finds photos thrown in the trash and later her body is found and the perp is caught. It also took place in California.

This is a book based on the case:

Death of a Model

This case makes me wonder if this guy is still in prison.

The strangulation murder of Raiderette Linda Sobek in November of 1995 had its own similarities to those committed in the late 1950s by photographer and serial killer- before that term was coined- Harvey Glatman, who hired unsuspecting models for photo shoots in remote locations, raped and then strangled them. But Glatman is no longer around to be a suspect in this most recent possible homicide; on 18 September 1959 he passed away from a most appropriate slow suffocation, brought on by the inhalation of cyanide in the green room of San Quentin's gas chamber. Though he had previously murdered at least three young women, after his execution he reformed his ways and never committed any criminal acts again....

They are now looking for this guy. He tried the same thing with another girl who brought her boyfriend along. When she met the guy, he acted aggressive and she called for her boyfriend. Perp managed to escape. LE says he had told this woman he would be passing the pictures for consideration in a movie with the SAME NAME as the one Kristine's roommate told police she had said. That's how certain this is the same guy!

The subject in this composite is wanted for questioning in the disappearance of Kristine Johnson. He is described as male White in his 30's, 6' tall, thin-medium build, clean shaven and light complected. Kristine Louise Johnson was last seen on February 15, 2003. She told her roommate that she was meeting a man in Beverly Hills for some type of an audition. The identity of the man and the location of the meeting are not known.

Police Release Sketch of Man Wanted in Case of Missing Woman
By Erica Williams
Staff Writer

Feb. 25 -- Ten days after Kristine Louise Johnson vanished under suspicious circumstances, police Tuesday released a composite sketch of a man wanted in the 21-year-old Santa Monica resident's disappearance.

The sketch -- which could be a major break in a case that has attracted national attention -- was released one day after Los Angeles police discovered Johnson's 1996 white Mazda Miata at a Century City hotel.

The sketch was developed from the description given on a special police tip line by a woman who said she had been lured to West Hollywood for a photo shoot under circumstances similar to those Johnson described to her roommate before disappearing.

A valet at the St. Regis Hotel in Century City said the man in the composite sketch strongly resembles a man he said parked Johnson's car the day after she disappeared.

"It is our belief that this person is involved in or has information regarding the disappearance of Kristine Johnson," Police Chief James T. Butts, Jr. said during a press conference in the City Council chambers attended by local and national media.

The man is described as white, in his 30s, 6-foot tall, with a thin to medium build, clean-shaven and of light complexion. He was last seen wearing a dark suit.

According to Butts, detectives received a tip last Thursday from a woman who said the man depicted in the sketch had approached her in late January 2003 at the Century City Mall. The man identified himself as a photographer and said he wanted to photograph her in a photo shoot related to a specific movie.

Johnson's roommate reported her missing February 17, two days after Johnson left their home saying that she was going to meet a photographer in Beverly Hills for an audition for a photo shoot related to a specific movie production. Johnson never returned home.

Butts said both the roommate and the witness identified the title of the movie, but he declined to give that information.

The witness who gave the tip said she followed the man's instructions to meet him on a street corner in West Hollywood. Her boyfriend, a former law enforcement officer, drove her to the location and waited in the car as she got out.

As the witness walked to the location, the man approached her and aggressively insisted that she go with him. She then signaled her boyfriend, who confronted the man and demanded he identify himself.

The man fled but was soon caught by the boyfriend, who frisked him for identification. He found none. The man was able to break free again, fled and was not caught.

Meanwhile, hotel security at the St. Regis Hotel reported to police Monday that a white 1996 Mazda Miata had been parked in their parking structure for several days. The LAPD ran the car's plates and informed Santa Monica police that they'd found a car they'd been looking for.

"We responded and summoned Los Angeles County Sheriff's crime lab personnel, who processed the car for evidence," Butts said.

Police interviewed the valet on duty February 16, the day Johnson's car was left at the hotel. According to Butts, the parking attendant said he saw a man park the car in the valet area that day.

"When he approached the subject to admonish him that the parking area was valet only," Butts said, "the subject stated, 'here's the key,' and tossed him the keys."

The valet said the man he saw that day strongly resembles the man depicted in the composite sketch.

Butts said that Santa Monica police detectives conducted a bloodhound search in Century City assisted by bloodhound handlers from the Ventura and Los Angeles County Sheriffs departments and Torrance police.

Detectives also have obtained surveillance video from the Century City Mall, where Johnson is thought to have met the photographer before her disappearance.

"We continue to search for Ms. Johnson, hoping that we will be able to return her to her family and loved ones," Butts said,

Johnson is described as a 5' 9" white female, weighing 140 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Police also released another photo of Johnson depicting blond hair. (Picture and description)

Butts asked for the public's assistance in identifying and finding the man in the composite drawing.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Office of Criminal Investigations Tip Line at (310) 458-8449.

Bay Area Mother Joins SoCal Search

POSTED: 4:00 p.m. PST February 26, 2003
UPDATED: 4:54 p.m. PST February 26, 2003

LOS GATOS, Calif. -- A Bay Area mother headed to Southern California Wednesday, hoping to assist Santa Monica officials any way she can in an attempt to find her daughter, who vanished on Feb. 15 after allegedly going to a modeling audition.

Terry Wark said she no longer could stay in her Los Gatos home.

"It's just so disheartening," Wark told KTVU. "It's truly overwhelming. I feel right now there is a part of me inside that is absolutely turned off to the reality of the whole situation so I can move forward and be proactive."

On Tuesday, Santa Monica police released a composite sketch of a man wanted in connection with the disappearance of Kristine Louise Johnson, the 21-year-old woman who vanished after telling her roommate she was going to audition for a photographer in Beverly Hills.

The man depicted in the composite had approached another woman using the same ruse, said Police Chief James Butts, who also announced that authorities had recovered Johnson's car.

Johnson was last seen Feb. 15 when she told her roommate she was going to Beverly Hills to audition for a photographer she met while shopping at the Century City Mall. The audition was to be a photo shoot related to a specific movie production, Butts told a news conference.

"It's our hope that we will be able to return her safely to her family, but that's tempered with the realization that every day that she is gone the likelihood that we will find her safe and sound diminishes," Butts said.

The chief said detectives received a tip on their hot line Feb. 20 from a woman who said she met a man at the Century City Mall in late January who identified himself as a photographer. The woman said the man told her he wanted to photograph her for the same movie production Johnson told her roommate about.

The woman told detectives she met the man at a street corner in West Hollywood, but she had her boyfriend, a former law enforcement officer, drive her to the meeting. The suspect approached her on the street and told her in a "very aggressive manner" that she should come with him immediately, Butts said.

The woman signaled her boyfriend, who confronted the man and frisked him for identification, Butts said. No identification was found and the man broke free and fled.

The woman and her boyfriend helped authorities develop the composite sketch.

Santa Monica police were notified Monday that Johnson's white 1996 Mazda Miata was parked Feb. 16 at the St. Regis Hotel in Century City by a person strongly resembling the man in the composite sketch, Butts said.

jayne, did you mean to post this article about laci here on purpose? Is there some connection to the case of Kristine Johnson?

Hopefully the tape in the mall will show a picture of this guy in the composite drawing. This guy looks rather unique, my guess is that he now has his hair changed dramatically, as he has a very distinctive forehead and hair line. It seems like it would be easy for him to slick this hair down and comb it forward to one side.

Paint Pro programme allows you to change a photo or drawing, I should see if I can give buddy a new doo...

This girl also looks a bit like Kristen Modaffi! Very scary business how young girls go missing. IT seems that their are many things that need to be apart of the education of the youth, to provide them with some street smart sense, things to avoid. It is a whole other life out there than the one that exisited since I/we went to high school and college. That and up the anti for those who commit crimes of violence against the innocents..

I downloaded the stetch and gave him a new hairdo, puhed forward and to the side and the suspect looked exactly the same. I'll figure out how to post this yet....

Police say they're closing in on a suspect in Kristine Johnson case

(Santa Monica, March 3, 2003, 11:45 a.m.) Police in Santa Monica California say they're closing in on a suspect in the disappearance of the Kristine Johnson. She's the former Saugatuck woman missing in southern California. Police have not made any arrests as of Monday morning.

The 22-year-old Saugatuck High School graduate has been missing from her southern California home since February 15th. That's when she told her roommate she was going to meet a photographer in nearby Beverly Hills.

Volunteers searched the canyons of Santa Monica over the weekend but found nothing.

Police say they have not made an arrest, but authorities reportedly have matched a name to the suspect. Police say they are waiting for evidence to be evaluated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department before naming him. One investigator said it could take weeks to develop the case.

Last week, another woman told investigators she also met a photographer under similar circumstances, but left when he became aggressive. Information from that woman led to a sketch. Police say the man was seen abandoning Johnson's car at the St. Regis Hotel in nearby Century City the day after Kristine disappeared.

Authorities believe they know who the man is. Meanwhile, Kirk Johnson says he's not giving up hope his daughter is still alive.

Meanwhile another mother appeals for more searchers.

About 100 volunteers searched the Hollywood Hills and Topanga Canyon during the weekend, but found no sign of Kristine Louise Johnson, who disappeared Feb. 15 after telling her roommate she was going to Beverly Hills to audition for a photographer she met while shopping at the Century City Mall.
