News in brief from Northern California
Eds: Contains items from Redding and Sacramento
By The Associated Press

REDDING, Calif. (AP) - Bulletins are being posted nationwide for
missing Redding woman Heather Marie Carpenter.

The Center for Missing Adults - the only federally funded
clearinghouse for missing adults - has signed on to help find the
22-year-old woman, who disappeared from Redding last week.
The Phoenix-based nonprofit notifies national law enforcement
and the media about missing adults who have mental difficulties or
may have been the victim of a crime.

Carpenter was last seen Aug. 4 by a 17-year-old boy who dropped
her off at her apartment after a party. The boy isn't a suspect in
the case, said Redding Police Capt. Gary Dirks.

Detectives are still looking to interview people who attended
the party, but have had difficulty locating partygoers since many
only know each other by first name, Dirks said.

The Modesto-based Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Foundation has
also stepped in to help find Carpenter. The fund is offering a
$5,000 reward for information leading to the Carpenter's safe
return. That's on top of an additional $10,000 being offered by
Secret Witness of Shasta County.

Missing Redding woman sought

By E-R Staff
Thursday, August 07, 2003 - REDDING - Redding police are searching for a woman who disappeared Monday morning.

Heather Marie Carpenter, 22, was reported missing at 6 p.m. Monday. Her parents live in Chico.

Carpenter attended a party Sunday evening and was dropped off at her apartment at 6 a.m. Monday by an acquaintance, according to a press release from the Redding Police Department.

No one saw her enter her apartment in the Shasta Creek apartment complex on Mission De Oro Drive, according to the press release. Investigators have questioned party attendees and other people who may have seen her.

Carpenter's friend Nancy Krause said it was also very out of character for Heather to disappear. Krause said she wasn't aware of anyone bothering Carpenter or stalking her friend.

There was no one stalking her via the Internet because Carpenter didn't use e-mail, Krause added. Instead Carpenter relied on her cellular telephone to contact friends.

Carpenter is described as white, 5 feet 4 inches tall and 120 pounds. She has long blonde hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a pink top and blue capri pants.

Redding police have been issued bulletins both in and outside the state of California and flyers have been distributed throughout Redding.

Anyone who may have information about Carpenter's whereabouts can contact the Redding Police Department at 225-4564.
