2 July 2003

quote from angelfire.com [bolding added]

One Murder. Two Victims?

At about 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 4, 1998, a still-unidentified assailant stabbed Yale University Senior Suzanne Jovin 17 times in the head, neck and back. Less than 15 minutes later, police found her near death at the intersection of East Rock and Edgehill roads, a mile from central campus. The senior was a well liked and respected member of her class. The State of Connecticut and Yale University have offered rewards that together are worth a total of $150,000. Originally, Yale Officials publically identified Suzanne's thesis advisor and at the time Yale Political Science Lecturer, James Van de Velde as a suspect. After years of suspicion, DNA taken from under Suzanne's fingernails failed to match a sample from Van de Velde's, thereby lessening the chance that Van de Velde may have been the murderer. The case has embarassed Yale and the New Haven Police department. Did they focus on the wrong person? It is over three years later and Suzanne's killer still has not been caught. There are no witnesses and little physical evidence. The last time she was sighted was around 9:20 pm that night, what happened the next 25 minutes remains a mystery. If you have any information on this case please contact the New Haven Police Department at 1-866-888-TIPS.

What a really nice girl Suzanne was - and what a loss to the world when she was murdered.

The large number of stab wounds would seem to indicate rage on the part of the murderer, wouldn't they? Not like a contract (professional) killing.

Benn, I was a little surprised at you referring to women walking alone after 9:00 pm as "the freedom that women have wanted". Walking alone after 9 doesn't seem that uncommon. In Jane Austen's day (Napoleonic wars - that era) upper class people apparently were amazed if women walked more than a few steps at any time of day - but that was long ago.

I am beginning more and more to look at why these things are happening rather than "Who did it" after someone is murdered. I am not against women walking alone late at night, but I think we have to look at reality.

Some of those antidated customs must have been developed for reasons. I don't have any records, but bad things do happen around campuses. I guess it depends on the time and the place and the social atmosphere at a particular time and place.

I think that statistics show us that a lot of crime happens at night. I don't have any figures available. Maybe I should take a course in criminology. You mentioned you had lived around, or on, universities. When I was about six years old my family lived about a mile from Stanford University, which is across the highway from Palo Alto, California. A Stanford Professor's wife was found dead in the bathroom.

I have never really studied this closely, but I may go back a little more and look at it. The professor's name was Lamson. There was a book about him which I never read. Recently, though, I saw that there is quite a bit of material on the Internet about this case.

There were four trials all together eventually, if what I read is true. Lamson was on death row at least once, but finally was released. He was ferreted away once by jailors when a mob came to lynch two kidnappers in the jail in San Jose, California. This was about 1932.

So bad things do happen, and if people want to defy the mores of the time they put themselves at risk. I know at the University of California at Berkeley for a time they had volunteer escort services for women walking on the campus at night.

People have to use common sense, because there are a lot of other people around who do not have common sense. I wonder if we can equate this to Joyce Chiang who was walking around alone late at night, and Chandra who was not following the safest procedure. Chandra was doing things secretly without telling anyone what she was doing, except she did communicate with her family, but not enough, and too late. If Chandra had not been living a secret life she might have been able to pick up some second opinions from others whom she talked to.

Condit is very guilty in wanting every girl he knew to live secretly, at least where he was involved. That is like trying to steal someone's soul.

Just some of my thoughts. I think it is good to exchange ideas.

Hey, how is this for an occaisional signature?

"Condit is very guilty in wanting every girl he knew to live secretly, at least where he was involved. That is like trying to steal someone's soul."

It sounds true to me.

too complicated, even if it does have a ring of truth to it. Concerning women walking alone, we had the same discussion about Chandra coming home from a gym two blocks to her apartment on a major downtown street at about the same time. Some thought that she shouldn't be outside alone after dark, even if it was only 8:30 pm.

Same goes for students around a campus. A lot of people walk all over around a campus in the evening. But Yale's "campus" is now set in a crime ridden city, so the campuses of yore are not the secluded havens for students that they were before inner cities grew up and decayed around them.

Also, women who lived around our Ohio State campus were attacked in their homes. For the last two years many were afraid of being alone even inside their apartment. They finally caught the guy last year. H elived in a nice suburb in the north part of town and drove down there to attack women.

In this article there is some information about the paper that Suzanne Jovin submitted to the Professor on the day she disappeared.

The Bin Laden Connection

Bin Laden, crop dusters - and the last work of Suzanne Jovin

By Paul Bass
Published 09/27/01
A Yale student researches the worldwide terrorist conspiracies of Osama bin Laden. She writes her undergraduate thesis on it.

Her professor, a U.S. intelligence officer, has his class figure out how terrorists might attack U.S. citizens. They come up with a scenario that will resonate three years later in a real-life national panic: The terrorists will plan to use a crop duster to spread chemical weapons through a crowded area.

Soon after the student completes her thesis, she's found murdered in New Haven.

The student was Suzanne Jovin. The murder took place the evening of Dec. 4, 1998. It remains one of the state's great unsolved mysteries, the subject of exposés and in-depth features in the national media.

Jovin's choice of thesis subject is one of many leads that have intrigued investigators who continue poring through evidence to this day. It led to renewed inquiry the past two weeks after the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon, in which the Bush administration consider bin Laden a prime suspect. And this week the federal government grounded crop dusters amid reports that terrorists (allegedly bin Laden-connected) considered using the planes to spread chemical or biological weapons over American cities.

All of which makes for easy conspiracy theorizing. But, say those close to the case, it's more a coincidence that adds yet another storybook twist to the Jovin saga.

"We exchanged some comments about it," David Rosen, attorney for Jovin's parents, said Monday. "I don't think anybody has any sense that it's any more than a horrific coincidence."

New Haven police have considered Jovin's thesis while pursuing all possible angles of the murder investigation. They also apparently received a letter (similar to one published in The New York Times magazine) urging them to consider a possible connection between her thesis and the murder. But there's no evidence that the police found a connection.

Chief Melvin Wearing said he can't discuss any part of the investigation because the case remains open. "We're looking at all aspects," he said.

One man would stand to gain from suggestions that Jovin's death bore a relationship to her terrorism thesis: Jovin's instructor, James Van de Velde, who lost his Yale job and his reputation after police identified him as a suspect in the murder. He has fought in the press and in the courts to clear his name.

But even Van de Velde, a career intelligence officer who now works at the Pentagon in a job with high security clearance, debunks the conspiracy theory as "fanciful."

"Suzanne's [1998] paper was indeed on [Osama bin Laden] and correctly noted with alarm the worldwide war he called for against Americans everywhere," Van de Velde wrote to the Advocate Monday in an e-mail responding to questions. "Her paper noted (although it was hardly new news) that OBL issued a fatwah calling for the death of all Americans everywhere, not just U.S. soldiers abroad."

Van de Velde reported that Jovin never mentioned having conducted interviews for the thesis. "I would suspect she would have footnoted it to impress me that she conducted primary research and did an interview or two. The paper I got on the day of her death, the penultimate draft, a weekend and two days before it was due in final, had no such reference."

Still, Van de Velde, too, used the word "ironic" to describe Jovin's work and the terrorist crisis.

"I challenged my class to a class project to think like a terrorist group in an optional out of class exercise and consider how might terrorists attack the U.S. and American citizens. The class came up with buying a crop duster to attack Americans at a large and notable public event with chemical weapons ... [T]he OBL network considered precisely this scenario.

To put Suzanne Jovin's thesis (which, maybe, we haven't actually heard!) in perspective here is a description of the final scene in a cancelled TV show called "The Lone Gunmen" which was the spinoff series featuring the three computer geeks from the X-Files. In the very first episode (the "Pilot") the show ended with a terrorist group hijacking a commercial airliner and aiming it at the World Trade Center. The "pilot" episode was shown on television in March of 2001!!!!!!!!!

On September 11, 2001 the lead writer for the series sat in his apartment in shock. There was not any discussion about this weird coincidence in the media until the Spring of 2002.

As for me, I never heard of this story until this week. The pilot episode of this cancelled show was their highest rated show but somehow it was not part of the internet chat outside of the Jeff Rense site which serves as a wonderful showcase for mysterious and unexplained events- much like we had hoped Art Bell would have done except that he was stifeled and suffocated by the Clear Channel MegaMonolith!

Quite an interesting act of creative writing for the Lone Gunmen staff. The lead writer wondered, in the interview, why the government had not had the same clarity of imagination in protecting our Country!

Would still love to see Suzanne Jovin's paper and have a chance to determine for myself whether or not she had written something that got her killed two hours after she turned it in to the Professor/CIA Man.

Goodnight,
James

James:

Very interesting information regarding Suzanne. I'm wondering how much information was disseminated in class regarding Suzanne's paper, whether or not she had discussions in class regarding Osama...in other words whether or not the entire class new of the subject matter. Who knew she was passing in her paper then, and as well knew the subject content.

I don't know if you recall but at 7pm thereabouts on May 1st an Arabian Intern was fired and removed from the congress building where he worked. It seems to me that this young man, was fired and removed for security reasons, that he was related to a well known Arabian terrorist, he was the nephew. If I recall correctly he went to one of the Ivy league universities. I had at one time the article which appeared in several newspapers, and for sure the Washington Post regarding this man's expulsion from the congress, it was reported that he cause a scene and the police were called.

Why this intrigued me of course, is regarding the murder of Chandra, that it was possible that Chandra could have been the victim, of an arab...jewish attack. Given that this man was expelled at approximately 7pm. And that only blocks away Chandra was leaving the gym after 7:30 p.m., there was opportunity, perhaps motive and likely means that Chandra could have been victim of a retailiation of this man. This is on the far side, I agree, however, the flying of the two jet lines into the twin towers in New York was on the far side of the far side.

The information that I have stated here about the intern being fired May 1st was posted on chandra levy.com, I posted the article from the Washington post myself, which I found looking for events (computer search) on May 1st that might have had relevance to Chandra's murder and to get an idea what Chandra may have been searching for in the media on that date on her computer. I do not remember whether the explusion of the intern was posted or discussed on whereschandra.com.

What now intrigues me is, where did this young arabian man do his undergraduate work at? Was he ( or someone else) avenging Osama and his cause and ordered to kill Suzanne? Likewise was Chandra's murder along similar lines simply because she was Jewish, for the cause so to speak. Did Chandra know this intern who was expelled.

I'm not much for conspiracy theories but as the information pointed out in this case, that the DNA found on Suzanne did not match the suspect. Also, the renewed interest in the case after the attack on the US, Sept 11th. A spy at Yale for the Taliban could have arrange for Suzanne to be murdered.

In the news articles provided, there is no hint that Suzanne had a boyfriend or that she was being stocked or what have ya. Yet stabbed this number of times, was either a crime of hate, or a random killing by a lunatic. If it was the latter, you'd expect that there were be other crimes, murders with the same MO. So likely someone hated Suzanne. I get the feeling that they did not know her, that it was a surprize attack as it came from behind. I sort of get the idea that if the person knew her that they would kill her face on. Given that it was likely dark, it is my guess that someone was waiting for her hidden, or that the killer was hiding waiting for any woman to walk by.

I do not think that it is likely that her teacher hired anyone to kill her, and it seems unlikely that he did it, if there is other DNA under her fingers, which of course implies that she fought back, or at least defended herself.

Let me know James if you remember the arabian that lost his internship the 1st of May 2001 and was protesting in the house of congress.

One other thing, there are a few unsolved murders associated with Universities, a couple in California for sure, one in Washington at the Campus of George Washington University, Christine Mizurnya(m.s.) Iranian decent. She was beatened and sexually assaulted. There is the young woman who was stabbed and found a mile away from the campus in California after having been last seen on the front lawn passed out in front of the Faternity and had walked home with her boyfriend and another person (girl). Kristina Modaffi who went missing in California while attending University (summer course) and working at a restaurant, her body has not been found.

I know this post is a little convuluted, but hopefully somewhat comprehensive!

Hello Peri,

I have those articles somewhere here. Will look for them and post it here.

I didn't remember it as being May 1 when the Arab intern was expelled but will check. There were some other reports about an attack on a woman at Georgetown U by an Arab man that same Spring.

The vicious knife attack does seem like a deranged person. As far as I know there haven't been any other similar murders in the vicinity of Yale since Suzanne Jovin's murder.

Cheerios,
James
