When did the police first hear about Chandra going missing?

The landlord called her parents on Sunday May 6th and her dad Dr. Levy had tried for several days to get her building management at the Newport or the DC Police to check her apartment, but they wouldn't do it.

When did they first go to her apartment?

Dr. Levy in desperation told the police on Sunday evening May 6 it was a medical emergency. They went and checked her apartment and told him she wasn't there.

Which was technically true but everything was in her apartment, she hadn't moved out. But telling her parents that made them think she had left for home. Just tragic and heartbreaking.

When did they finally come back to take evidence from the apartment?

When Condit came back to work in DC on Monday May 7 he had the FBI notified about a missing constituent in DC and the FBI contacted DC Police about it.

The police went to her apartment on May 9 and looked around. A detective looked at her laptop which was on but not plugged in. He took a look at the internet history and powered it off.

They left to get a search warrant to gather evidence in her apartment the next day. They also saw a business card for Congressman Condit and paid a visit to his condo to ask him for any insight he could provide.

What is troublesome about their timeline?

The next day they returned and the laptop was inoperable. They described it as the operating system was obliterated.

How did her laptop become obliterated overnight?

The data was finally extracted from her hard drive by a computer data recovery company six weeks later. You don't get that kind of damage turning the computer off.

What did the police initially find in Chandra’s apartment?

The most critical item is what they didn't look for. They didn't ask for the surveillance tape of the Newport for May 1 until too late. It had already been rotated into use again and recorded over. Especially with a 911 call from the building this tape should have been preserved by Newport management anyway.

What can you discern from her internet activity? What sticks out?

The only indication that Chandra may not have been the one screaming that morning is some search activity on her computer in mid morning to 1pm, including a search on Rock Creek Park and goFrance.

Just a lot of comprehensive searching on Condit and his family. The Rock Creek Park search is what got all the attention, and then her remains were found there a year later. The search brought up the address of park headquarters, Klingle Mansion, and a map, but the map was a green blob.

There were no trails or roads or any other detail of the park, which was reported to be provided by Mapquest. I would categorize the Rock Creek Park search in the same category as the Baskin Robbins and goFrance searches, whatever that reason was. At 12:59pm her last search was on the goFrance travel site and then logged off the internet.

Can you describe the last email she sent to her parents?

A super saver air fare promotion email was forwarded from her email account to her parents email at home in Modesto mid morning the day she disappeared.

But there was no comment included. She had big news for her aunt a couple of days earlier on Sunday and her parents were asking when and where they should meet her, but nothing about it in the email.

What were Chandra’s discussions with her landlord about possibly breaking her lease early?

A few months earlier in January, after she had completed her classes, she checked with her landlord about breaking her lease to move in with her boyfriend.

He offered to let the boyfriend live with her, but she said that wasn't an option. She also talked to her gym about cancelling her membership there. But by February she told her landlord it didn't work out.

Can you describe the email sent to Chandra’s landlord about vacating the apartment?

By the end of the week after losing her internship she was resigned to having to leave. She left a message for her landlord and sent an email saying she was out of work and would be moving out to go home. She gave a move out date of the next weekend, May 5 or 6.

Can you talk about the constant back and forth with her landlord why that raised concerns for you?

The next day, Sunday, she left a message for him that she now may stay and would have an answer for him on Wednesday.

On Monday Chandra called her own number several times throughout the day to check for a voice message she was waiting for.

Who did she talk to Sunday to change her prospects of staying in DC?

Can you describe the message she left for her Aunt on her machine before she disappeared?

She also called her aunt and left a message that her internship was over, she
was heading home for awhile and didn't know what she would do for the summer, but she had big news to tell her.

Not knowing what she would do for the summer leaves out pretty much every possibility that's been suggested except for some kind of opportunity in the fall that could have been promised to her that day.

Were there any details that the police withheld to the public in the initial
investigation of Chandra’s last days and/or her apartment?

It was revealed by defense questioning of police in the Guandique trial that a
handwritten note mentioning cerebral hemorrhage and cardiac death was found on her kitchen countertop.

This was a year before her remains were found in Rock Creek Park with a cracked skull, cause unclear according to medical examiner.

What would a note about cerebral hemorrhage and cardiac death be doing on her countertop, and why was this information withheld?

Was this where all the suicide talk came from? And wouldn't there be a purpose to that?

As the media storm intensifies on Gary Condit another woman steps forward to tell her story, what does she end up going public about?

Anne Marie Smith was another girlfriend of Condit, and she was worried about her safety. She filed an affidavit stating the contents of a phone call she received from Condit.

He said he may be in trouble and for her not to call him for awhile, don't talk to anyone about him. She went to the DC Police and told them everything she could about what she knew about interacting with the married congressman, including rules of secrecy.

One of the most important items learned is that Condit had access to a Ford Fiesta that he drove around in with her. She told her friends that if she disappeared, it wasn't because of suicide.

What made Anne Marie suspicious that Condit was seeing other women?

Anne Marie wasn't a nosy girlfriend, for example, Condit told her not to use the bedroom closet she normally used and use the hall closet, and she was too jet lagged to say anything about it, but she did see long brown hairs in the bathroom and asked him whose they were.

He told them they were hers. She said no, but they were supposed to be hers. She also saw some female toiletries that weren't hers. Then she saw neckties hanging out from under the bed and asked what those were.

Condit told her they were for her. She still talked to him after that but that was the last time they got together. This was about a month before Chandra disappeared.

When someone else sees the case on TV what does she do immediately, who does she call? What did that conversation consist of?

Another recent girlfriend of Condit, Joleen Argentini McKay, immediately went to the FBI when she saw the news of an intern associated with Condit disappear.

She also related the rules of secrecy she was to follow in her relationship with Condit, and this while working in his DC office as an assistant. She told the same story of staying in his apartment, provided airfare to California, and promised that Condit would marry her.

She called the DC Police and encouraged them to search his apartment. She clearly related to Chandra's disappearance.

Can you talk about the conversations between Sven Jones and Lisa Depaulo for Talk Magazine?

Chandra talked about her married boyfriend without naming him to Sven. She shared her problems with Sven and talked them out.

Sven tried to get her to lie low but Chandra was determined to have a confrontation about Condit keeping his word about leaving his terminally ill wife and marrying her, the five year plan.

This is what she believed and told friends and family.

What was the speculation surrounding female problem that she told Sven Jones?

Chandra told Sven that she had a problem, and when asked about it she said a female problem that she needed to take care of. She was uncomfortable talking about it and Sven got the impression she was going to go to a doctor about it.

The major speculation was of pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease. But her parents were coming to visit in a few days, her father was a doctor, and she didn't discuss the problem with him.

No appointments could be found that she made with a doctor in the DC area. She didn't discuss a female problem with her family when they got together a few days later. And she mentioned being on her period during that visit.

She was dreamy eyed about her boyfriend, so it wasn't a sexually transmitted disease she had discovered. Sven asked about Condit's wife, and Chandra said that was not really a major issue. Not sure what kind of problem she would bring up and then not want to talk about it, to Sven or her family.
