I watched the show just now, Chandra Levy: Who Killed Chandra?

It's on Oxygen.com site: http://www.oxygen.com/mysteries-scandals

This is excellently done. My congrats to Oxygen and NBCUniversal and Soledad O'Brien for tying together the interviews and presenting with helpful visuals. I can highly recommend this show for anyone interested in True Crime.

It apparently was aired March 23 but I missed seeing it in the TV listings. I checked Comcast On Demand and it isn't included, there's a Mysteries & Scandals episode 6 missing which appears to be this slot.

The Oxygen Scandals & Mysteries site shows the video, and there are different ways to access it. Some watched it from Amazon Prime. Anyone with cable with the Oxygen channel can enter their cable site signon and watch the streaming video. I entered my password for Comcast and watched it no problem.

This was shot last June. Mysteries & Scandals was new, Oxygen was focusing a new season on True Crime, and they asked me to participate in the Chandra Levy episode. I went to DC and did the filming which appears in this episode.

I wasn't sure if the Chandra Levy episode would get the go ahead so I didn't mention it. Then it aired without me realizing it, so mentioning it belatedly. Hopefully everyone visiting this site will get the opportunity to view it.

The easiest way to view it is apparently Amazon Prime as it shows up in the list of shows. But http://www.oxygen.com/mysteries-scandals is the goto as long as you have a password for your cable site. For those that have cut the cord then something like Amazon Prime or Google Play is something you might still have.

I dd some prep for this show, with some questions and answers. Over next few days I will type various questions and answers prep for this interview. All of the questions and answers didn't get asked and answered in filming, and only a portion of the filming made it into the show.

They did a good job of interleaving info from myself and others though, in my opinion. Out of the shows done on Chandra so far, this was the one that actually dealt with the mystery and scandal of her disappearance, true to its name.

thank you, kate. I wasn't aware about the being able to listen with iTunes. Interesting. Michael Doyle and Joe McCann do an excellent job in this. I think you'll find it's well done although you knew as much as anyone about Chandra's case when she disappeared.

I'm collateral damage from the Great Recession. I was lucky to find a job down here and happy to stay here for the duration.

I'll be adding some more Q&A to this thread to provide more info for readers.

thanks

I saw the show and it is very good! They did an excellent job of summarizing the important events. You did a wonderful job, re: reporting on her computer as well as the “scream”, the “911” call, and the fact that the things she normally would have taken with her when she went out, were lying around the apartment!
It was great hearing more from McCann, too! It’s nice that Soledad O’Brien allowed the “non-jogger” theory in, although I was surprised that McCann still held the theory that Chandra went out to meet “someone”, after pulling a blanket out of the dryer, which was lying on the floor and didn’t take her keys, identification, mace, etc. with her. He didn’t mention anything about the crime scene having possibly been staged and Chandra’s remains having possibly been moved to Rock Creek Park after she passed away.

I agree, Rainbow. McCann is the voice of reason in Chandra's case, along with the reporting of McClatchy's Michael Doyle. We will be filling in what wasn't covered more in depth here.

thanks much for your review.

As good as Oxygen's Mysteries & Scandals covered Chandra's case at this point, and I will be commenting on the shows that didn't cover it as well in another thread, there was one misleading theme in an accompanying Crime Time blog on their site.

Somewhere. I was unable to find it again, so not sure how many people are being misled by it. But wrote to get it clarified.

The gist was that the case summary said that Guandique confessed to a cellmate in 2001, and this confession would not resurface until a decade later.

This is an easy error to make, but is unacceptably misleading. I think many of the crime show people and therefore the audience are confused by the two alleged cellmate confessions and how they were handled or alegedly mishandled.

The 2001 "cellmate confession" was while Guandique was jailed in DC pre-trial after being arrested for assaulting two joggers. That was a different jail and a different cellmate than a decade later.

It was investigated immediately. Guandique, and this is a quote from law enforcement at the time, "passed", and the cellmate "failed" polygraph tests.

It was only years later that DC Police would claim that any polygraph administered with a Spanish interpreter is "inconclusive". Which means that taking a law enforcement polygraph is completely worthless if you speak Spanish. Pretty convenient, heh?

Nearly a decade later there was another cellmate, in Federal prison where Guandique was serving 10 years for those two assaults, that told law enforcement of a story of a confession to him by Guandique. This is the cellmate that testified at the trial, lied, was cause for a retrial, etc.

Interestingly, we were beyond polygraphs at this point, you can take a good guess why.

So please correct your blog on this matter. The DC Police were not actually involved in that first passed polygraph so if they found the results inconvenient then it is very fitting. Chandra is after all the story of an inconvenient woman.

Now, for some questions and answers prep I did for this interview. Most of this didn't make it into the show. Much of that is very important to understanding what happened to Chandra. Mysteries & Scandals came much closer than anyone else to getting that story out there.

Introduce yourself. What’s your name and what’s your connection to this story?

Hi, I'm Ralph Daugherty. I'm a computer programmer and like a lot of people followed news of the missing Washington intern Chandra Levy that summer of 2001.

But some information from the DC Police in mid-July, two and a half months after Chandra disappeared, was to change my focus for the next several years. The police released a list of websites that Chandra visited just before she disappeared in the hopes it would prompt some information from the public. I thought, well, I'm a programmer, I'll take a look at it and see if I can help.

I've been writing on it ever since. I have a website justiceforchandra.com and wrote a book on it.

Why did you write your book and what is it called?

My book is Murder on a Horse Trail: The Disappearance of Chandra Levy. I wrote it to piece together all the information that was reported and discussed and dissected on the internet during the year that Chandra was missing.

Timelines usually suffice to lay out what happened in sequence. But I say in the opening chapter of Murder on a Horse Trail that the telling of this story will rival the most complex murder mysteries ever told. Many would have us believe this is a simple story of a woman murdered jogging, which is tragic enough but not complicated. What really happened is complicated. I try to make sense of it and pose the questions that still need answered.

What was the timeline of Chandra Levy’s last few days before she disappeared?

Chandra was a paid intern in the Public Relations office of the Bureau of Prisons. She had completed graduation requirements for her Masters Degree from USC in Public Administration with her internship part of that, and was expecting to go to a graduation ceremony in Los Angeles in May and return to her internship while she applied for converting it to a full time job and also applying to the FBI as an analyst.

But she got a rude shock in late April. A casual conversation with an HR person on a Friday resulted in being told her post graduate internship had expired due to graduation requirements met in December and that Monday was her last day.

She emailed friends back in California that that wasn't the way it was supposed to work. Something was wrong with the way the start and end of her internship was handled and communicated to her. She spent the remainder of the week and weekend trying to figure out if she had enough chance for a job to remain in her apartment or to give a move out date to her landlord and return home.

When was the last time she was seen alive?

Chandra was last seen Monday, April 30, 2001, the evening before she disappeared, at her gym a few blocks from her apartment on Dupont Circle.

She was trying to end her membership on the last day of the month of April because she said she was going back home to California.

Can you describe her encounter with the gym manager to cancel her membership? Why is that important?

Chandra was told she would have to give 30 day notice but that she could use her last 30 days membership at any reciprocating clubs in California.

They gave her a list, discussed locations near home, she xeroxed it, and took it home after working out. Many people including the DC Police Chief at the time have suggested she was jogging because she no longer had a gym membership. But she still had her gym membership for another 30 days.

What does her activity tell you about her disappearance?

Chandra clearly expected to receive some information by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday for her to make a critical decision about staying or leaving and when and how she would be going home to tell her landlord and family.

Unless she had those answers she wouldn't be without her cell phone and would continue checking for a message she was waiting for. She left her apartment without anything but her keys. This has been attributed to jogging or a long walk, but Chandra didn't jog or take long walks alone for exercise. She didn't even jog on a treadmill at her gym. Her friends Jennifer Baker and Sven Jones told police she didn't jog.

There is no basis and has never been a basis for Chandra walking or jogging in a park. In late May police searched around Calvert Street and Rock Creek, but this was a couple of blocks walk that took her down Calvert Street from Woodley Park Metro station to Condit's condo. Nevertheless news sources wrote that friends said she jogged frequently.

Who were these friends?

Can you talk about Chandra’s personality? Was she a cautious person?

Chandra was trained in self defense and security, and was an evangelist for
women safety measures. She always carried her pepper spray on her key chain as her father reminded her and urged her friends to carry.

She was an applicant to the FBI, prior to that minoring in college in criminal law, prior to that working for the Modesto police department, prior to that being a member of the police explorers club in high school and wearing her uniform to school.

Chandra was as safety conscious as anyone could be. Sven Jones often walked her home after work from the Dupont Circle metro station.

Was there anything that happened at her apartment complex the night/morning before she went missing?

The Scream. When DC police looked at police records for May 1 they found a 911 call had been placed from her building just after 4:30am that morning. Chandra was on the internet searching on Amtrak schedules to California as late as 2am.

Police responded to the 911 call and looked around but didn't see anything.

How long did it take for the Levys to become concerned that something was wrong? What did they do?

Both the landlord and her parents were expecting to hear from her and started calling and leaving messages. Condit also left a couple of messages.

Her parents grew more and more worried and concerned each day. By the weekend you can imagine how dire the situation was. They called their congressman Gary Condit at home on Saturday May 5. He said he would try to get help for them and set up a reward. That is a very strange answer to a call from her parents saying she is missing.

What's interesting about Condit's phone message is that much later Condit talked about Chandra taking a train home and thinking she was on a train for four days as to why he never heard from her.

But when Chandra disappeared he didn't tell her parents or the police anything about that, and the phone message he left was "I haven't heard from you, maybe you're out of the country". And the last search on her computer concerned traveling to France.
