This is something I have often wondered about - especially when considering the timing of Chandra's disappearance May 1, the initial arrest of Ingmar Guandique on May 7, and the search of Chandra's apartment May 9 and apparent sabbotage of her computer/perhaps other tampering that night.

Is it possible that the party responsible for the sabbotage of Chandra's computer began looking for a patsy and found recently-released Ingmar Guandique? Could that party have sent someone to Ingmar, offering him dropped charges in the burglary of May 7 and perhaps money for attacking women jogging in Rock Creek Park?

When Ingmar was arrested July 1 for attacking Shilling and Wiegand, his prior buglary arrest did not show up on a search.

We can understand Ingmar's burglary of May 7. He took some jewelery, which he could have pawned or given to his girlfriend. He showed no proclivity for violence at that time, fleeing when the victim returned to her apartment and screamed. Ingmar's attacks on Shilling and Wiegand don't make much sense. Although the victims were understandably terrified, the attacks seemed half-hearted and without motivation. Ingmar left behind anything of value, such as the walkman players.

Interesting thoughts, Jane. D.C. homicide detective, Lawrence Kennedy, told my potential witness friend that Guandique had a police-verified alibi at the real time of Chandra's murder. As a matter-of-fact, he was already aquitted of Chandra's murder at the time of his final arrest for the jogger attacks.

Gladys Weatherspoon, Guandique's PD in the jogger trials corroborates this in the comment that she gave to the Guardian UK newspaper which you posted after his wrongful conviction for the murder of Chandra Levy, Jane.

Reasonable doubt in the Chandra Levy case
How reliable is the conviction of Ingmar Guandique for the 2001 murder, when the key evidence is a disputed prison confession?

Critics of the trial, like Maryland attorney Gladys Weatherspoon, who represented Guandique in his earlier defence, says she is stunned and appalled by the jury's verdict. In addition to the obvious evidential problems, she says the jury was not allowed to hear that Guandique had once passed a lie detector test or that police had ruled him out of any role in Levy's death at the time they had charged him with the two robberies.

"This case isn't what it appears to be, and it should never have come to trial," Weatherspoon told me. She accuses the jury – and the judge – of being swayed by their emotional identification with the defendant and the other robbery victims, and by what she sees as their susceptibility to a wish to allow the Levy family, especially Chandra's mother, obtain "closure" in the case.

And. . .

Weatherspoon says the jurors didn't seem to realise that Guandique was only a "weak teenage kid" when he committed his earlier robberies, not the full-grown 30-year-old man – and gang-member – which, to them, he appeared to be in court. Yet, the prosecution succeeded in planting in the jurors' minds that those earlier robberies were assaults, and possible preludes to murder, had the women not escaped.

Weatherspoon insists this idea is preposterous. "These women were older and much bigger than Guandique, and all he did was snatch their Walkmans," she says. "This was more like purse-snatching, and yet the prosecution threw the book at him, and he ended up getting a 10-year sentence." Court records show that Guandique was never charged with assault, let alone attempted rape or murder, in those earlier cases.

I wonder about the "disappearance" of Guandique's first arrest report, as well.

I have to say, if Guandique knew anything he'd be telling his lawyers and they'd be throwing it out there in defense.

He wouldn't be sitting on information like that.
