Authorities and volunteers are widening a search for a 17-year-old missing in San Diego County after a registered sex offender was arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Some 1,400 volunteer searchers and more than 100 law enforcement officers failed to find Chelsea King on Sunday, but evidence was found that led to the arrest of 30-year-old John Albert Gardner of Lake Elsinore, Calif. some 75 miles to the north, San Diego County Sheriff William Gore told the Associated Press in an interview.

King disappeared on Thursday after going for a run near Lake Hodges at Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego, a popular regional park full of running trails. Her car, with her cell phone and iPod inside, were found later that night.

Gore said investigators discovered physical evidence linking Gardner to the case. Gore would not elaborate on the nature of the evidence. He said they were holding out hope that she would be found.

Gardner was taken into custody at a restaurant in Escondido shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday and was being questioned Sunday night.

"This investigation is ongoing and specific criminal charges are still being determined," Gore said at a news conference.

thanks for the update on yet another sex offender disappearance and murder, goz. Here's the problem with this country. You can betcha that someone will pass a law that says if you're a sex offender, we're going to give you a life sentence, or even execute you, for every capital felony you commit.

There, take that you sex offenders, they'll say. Now everyone can go back to being sheeple waiting to see which child or young woman is the next victim.

Out of this sad state of affairs for Chelsea King and her family and loved ones in San Diego, this appears to be a serial murderer (or serial attempts at murder) that should be considered a prime suspect in Amber Dubois' disappearance, unless we can absolutely rule out that he didn't have a bergundy pickup truck. (see Amber Dubois, 14, disappears in front of Escondido, CA High)

I am just so disgusted that we won't lock up these felony predators and won't monitor them when they've served their time and are out on probation. It's just so much easier and cheaper to see who disappears next and see if they can figure out who did it, I guess.

Chelsea was found in a shallow grave off the running trail, close to shore of the park lake.

Even though there is seldom any hope the disappeared woman will be found alive, it's always devastating news. For such a wonderful young life to be cut short by this evil is unspeakable.

We knew he was a sex offender, we didn't do anything about it.

Chelsea lost her life because of it.

May she rest in peace.

This makes me sick she was found dead. I expected it but it is always shocking. Why can't they lock up these SO for good? We know they will come out and do the same crime over and over..

The remains of Leticia Hernandez, the Oceanside girl whose 1989 Christmas-season kidnapping struck a sympathetic chord nationwide, were discovered Saturday near the Pala Indian Reservation, authorities said today.

A property caretaker found the remains off county Highway S16, two miles south of the Riverside County line, Oceanside police and FBI officials said. Dental records were used to confirm that the dead girl was Leticia, who was 7 when she was abducted.

Tests performed by the San Diego County medical examiner's office indicate she died from three to 12 months ago, police said.

Local and federal investigators converged this morning at the remote location where the remains were found, described by one officer as "a two-lane highway out in the middle of nowhere."

FBI spokesman Ron Orrantia, interviewed at the site, only 26 miles from Leticia's home, said he expects that more that 50 law-enforcement personnel would be at the scene today. He described the remains as a partial skeleton.

"We haven't found all the parts of the body," Orrantia said.

wonderful. a sex predator dumping ground. sheesh.

I get the feeling Amber's remains were not found that close to the highway as this child's remains were.

But other than how far off the road the body was left, you're right, sounds like predators found this to be a convenient dumping ground for victims.

As sad as it was to lose Chelsea, I think this loss of Chelsea and Amber has struck a nerve. We've run out of laws to pass named after yet another victim of a sex predator. People are finally realizing that letting these predators run around unmonitored is basically sacrificing children and hoping your child isn't next.

It sounds like they are finding that realization unacceptable.

Plea deal, he did not get the death penalty. The family decided to let him rot in prison the rest of his life. Guess that is better as he would have spent years and years on death row.

Chelsea King's parents decided to settle for life in prison and a guilty plea of murder from the sex offender charged with raping and killing their daughter and a 14-year-old girl, rather than insist on the death penalty. The Kings agreed to the deal because they wanted to spare their son the strife of continuing litigation as well as provide the other teen's grieving family a measure of peace.
