FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say they are investigating the "suspicious" death of a pregnant soldier, whose body was found at a Fayetteville motel.

Spc. Megan Lynn Touma was identified Tuesday, two days after her body was found in a motel room. The 23-year-old dental specialist with the 19th Replacement Company was from Cold Springs, Ky., and was originally born in Seoul, South Korea.

The Fayetteville Police Department called the death suspicious. Authorities said they do not know the cause of death but said Touma was seven months pregnant at the time.

I think we need to follow up on this story and find out where and who it leads too. It seems rather hinky.

There is not any new information on why the young lady has died. I will continue to follow the story. They are still calling it suspicious though. The soldier did go AWOL which is news to me.

Maybe a closer look at the ex as we always do is the first thing we should study. I have not gathered any information on the ex to date but may look at some other sites.

It appears this case is now moving along. There has been a POI named and now we can possibly make an arrest after finding the soldiers body in a motel bathtub. I hope they have the right person. Please read story below please.

Fort Bragg Soldier Named Person of Interest in Pregnant Army Dentist's Death
Saturday, June 28, 2008

SNIP
A soldier at Fort Bragg in North Carolina is a person of interest in the death of a pregnant servicewoman whose body was found in a motel bathtub a week ago, a military spokesman said Saturday.

The soldier is training at a school where special operations ranging from raids to reconstruction projects are taught, said Lt. Col. John Clearwater, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. The soldier is studying psychological operations.

"We understand and are aware that a soldier assigned to the command as a student for training is a person of interest. We are not aware of any charges," Clearwater said.

Telephone and e-mail messages left for a Fayetteville Police Department spokesman were not returned Saturday.

Police have called the death of Spc. Megan Lynn Touma, 23, suspicious. She was found after a maintenance supervisor smelled a foul odor coming from a room with a "Do Not Disturb" sign.

Search warrants released Friday evening showed blood might have been detected in the hotel room where a Touma was found dead, and a local newspaper reported getting a letter from a person claiming to be her killer.

Investigators seized two section of drywall containing a red substance suspected to be blood from Touma's room, according to the search warrants. Swabbings of DNA and other items were also taken from the hotel room and a rented Chevrolet Trailblazer parked outside.

The Fayetteville Observer has also released a letter, dated June 17, from a person purporting to be the killer of Touma. The letter carries a symbol used by the Zodiac killer, a serial killer from the 1960s.

The newspaper says an anonymous source told its reporters that police found an identical sign in lipstick on the bathroom mirror of Touma's room.

Fayetteville police told the paper that although the letter is valuable evidence, they believe it was written to mislead investigators and the public.

Dr. Michael Teague, a forensic psychologist who worked for the Raleigh Police Department as a criminal profiler, said there is a variety of reasons why someone would have used the reference to the Zodiac Killer.

“I’m thinking it's more a chance of somebody wanting publicity or having a strange sense of humor or maybe the actual perpetrator trying to confuse police,” Teague said.

Officials: Pregnant Army Servicewoman's Death a Homicide
Monday, June 30, 2008
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,373612,00.html

Civilian and military detectives are now treating the death of a Fort Bragg soldier as a homicide, although authorities have not determined the cause of her death, police said Monday.

Authorities have a person of interest in the case of Army Spc. Megan Lynn Touma's death. That person of interest is a soldier the military has said is assigned to the Fort Bragg-based U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

Meanwhile the Army's criminal investigations unit has joined the effort to catch the killer. Touma was found dead in the bathtub of motel room.

"It made sense. We've been providing information and working with Fayetteville from the start," said Christopher Grey, a spokesman for the Army's Criminal Investigation Command.

I wish the military authorities would do DNA testing on the fetus in all of these cases and compare it with that of the males who served in the vicinity of the mother around the time of conception. I know this couldn't be done, even outside of civilian life, but it sure might be interesting to see if anyone matched up. Maybe someone high-ranking (someone with a lot to lose financially or reputation-wise).

good idea Jane, it might move the case a long a bit doing DNA testing.

As stated, I know too it can't be done, but wonder what would happen if it could be done. Could snag a high ranking official....or someone other choice person as stated.

Local police would get a big clue days after the discovery of Touma’s body. An anonymous letter was received by The Fayetteville Observer, a message written by someone claiming to have murdered the person found in room 143. In a typewritten letter dated June 17 and postmarked locally on June 24, the writer said the following:

"17 JUNE @))*

To whom it may concern. The following is to inform that I am responsible for the dead body that was found on Saturday June 21 @ 1130 in room 143 at Fairfield INN by Marriot Skibo RD. It was a master piece. I confess, that I have killed many times before in several states, but now I will start using my role-model’s signature. There will be many more to come. Fayetteville law enforcement are very incompetent. I basically, sat there and watch while investigators were on site."

Investigators will note the order of date on the letter, in this case day, month, and year, is consistent with the form used by members of the military. The writer typed in 2008 while holding the shift key so it came out as "@))*". The writer then attempts to separate him/herself from any personal knowledge of the victim: He or she doesn't refer to Touma by name, or sex, but only as “the dead body.” The writer’s apparent reference to the suspected murder, “it was a master piece,” appears to have been inserted to suggest someone who has killed before. The writer then attempts to suggest his/her far-reaching ability to commit similar crimes by following “I have killed many times before” with the statement “in several states.”

FAYETTVILLE, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday in the death of a pregnant colleague whose partially decomposed body was found in a motel bathtub more than a month ago, police said.

Edgar Patino, 27, of nearby Hope Mills, was arrested at his home without incident just after 8 p.m. in the death of Army Spc. Megan L. Touma, said Fayetteville police watch commander Lt. Lars Paul. Paul said Patino was stationed at Fort Bragg but couldn't provide his rank or unit.

No further details were immediately available, but police have scheduled a 11 a.m. news conference Wednesday.

Touma, 23, was found dead June 21 at a Fayetteville motel after a maintenance supervisor smelled a foul odor coming from a room with a "Do Not Disturb" sign. A dental specialist from Cold Spring, Ky., Touma was seven months pregnant and had recently arrived from a base in Germany.

Suspect in Pregnant Soldier Killing Arraigned on First-Degree Murder Charges
Wednesday, July 30, 2008
Fox News/Assoc. Press

SNIP
A Fort Bragg soldier was arraigned Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in the death of a colleague police say was pregnant with his unborn baby.

Edgar Patino, 27, told Cumberland County Judge Laura Devane that he understood the charges against him and would ask that the court appoint him an attorney.

Patino appeared wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands cuffed in front of him. Devane set his next hearing for Aug. 20.

Earlier Wednesday, police in Fayetteville, N.C., said they zeroed in on Patino after gathering evidence that he wrote a letter to a local newspaper claiming he killed Army Spc. Megan L. Touma, whose decomposing body was found in a motel bathtub.

The note was from a person who said he was a serial killer responsible for Touma's death and featured a circle-and-cross drawing that had also been etched in lipstick on the motel room mirror where Touma's body was found.

It was the same symbol as one used a generation ago by San Francisco's infamous Zodiac Killer.

SNIP

SNIP
Police believe the note was written to mislead detectives and the media. Fayetteville Sgt. Chris Corcione said Wednesday that Patino wrote and mailed the letter "with the intent of throwing off investigators."

Det. Joshua Carter said that though Patino has not admitted to killing Touma, who police say was seven months pregnant with his child, "we have evidence linking the suspect with the letter" to the Fayetteville Observer.

Among that evidence is a typewriter taken from Patino's residence that investigators say was used to compose the note, Carter told reporters Wednesday. Patino allegedly purchased the typewriter the day before the letter was mailed.

What a putz! Hope he gets the DP...

May she and her child now RIP. Blessings.
