A Serial Killer On the Loose?
In Daytona Beach, a corpse turns up, stirring fresh fears

Stacey Charlene Gage, 30, a single mother of a girl and a boy, went out to buy a bag of ice one night last month and never came home. Three weeks later, a few miles from where Gage lived with her grandmother in Holly Hill, a middle-class suburb of Daytona Beach, Fla., Police Officer Chris Reeder parked on a secluded dead-end road near an abandoned church to do some paperwork. He rolled down his window and "smelled something bad." About 15 yards in from the road, Reeder's flashlight fell on the nude, decomposed body of a young woman who was later identified by her fingerprints as Gage. Police say she was apparently killed within a day after her disappearance. And that's all the world at large would have heard about Stacey Charlene Gage, a former drum majorette who dropped out of high school in her senior year and had two children by the age of 21, except that her murder followed by almost exactly two years the unsolved killings of three other young women in Daytona Beach. "It's eerily similar and has all the earmarks of the other cases," says Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood. "I hope to God he's not back," he adds, referring to the unknown killer. "But I'm afraid that's what we're looking at."

For Daytona Beach, a working-class tourist mecca on Florida's Atlantic coast best known for its motor speedway, the murder reawakened memories of the winter of 2005-06, when the killer struck three times within less than three months. His victims--Laquetta Gunther, Julie Green and Iwana Patton--were described by police as prostitutes working the rundown strip of bars, motels and trailer parks near Ridgewood Avenue. (Police suspect that Gage, who had a history of drug abuse, may have been a part-time prostitute, but her family disagrees.) Gunther and Green were naked when they were found, shot in the back of the head; Patton had been shot in the face "which leads us to believe she knew what was going on and tried to fight," Chitwood says. The same .40-caliber handgun was used each time, and although Gunther's body had been dumped in a grubby downtown alley, the bodies of the other two victims were discovered in the woods on the fringes of the city--as was Gage's. Police have not said how Gage was killed.

Doctor questioned about serial killings, house searched

By LYDA LONGA
Staff Writer

Since the arrest of an Ormond Beach doctor who had a prostitute, handcuffs and weapons in his car, Daytona Beach police are looking for fresh leads in the unsolved murders of four women.

The physician, Jerrold Ecklind, has voluntarily given police a DNA sample and his home has been searched for a handgun of the same type used in three of the four killings, the doctor's attorney said. No gun of that type was found, attorney Mike Lambert said, and DNA results are not complete.

Investigators also have questioned Ecklind about the murders, asking whether he knew any of the four women who were shot to death, Lambert said.

However, police won't discuss anything concerning Ecklind, only saying he has cooperated with police and that any other information is considered criminal intelligence.

Well all I can say is at least he gave his DNA voluntarily which is more than we see from many that are investigated for crimes they are thought to commit. DNA was left at two of the crime scenes.

I'd like to keep an eye on these killings and see what transpires.

This is a very good writeup from impqueen and UnamusedCat on TheDreamin'Deamon. Sorry, I never heard of the website before but I know the Daytona area decently (I was born there) and this is an interesting take on it.

UnamusedCat also adds in a comment that the pic resembles the serial murderer's composite sketch. Here's the pic from their site:

We have an interest here on justiceforchandra.com in cop impersonators due to the missing Jennifer Kesse from Orlando. Work we've done on surveillance photos shows a person wearing an armed bike patrol uniform walking away from Jennifer's car a few hours after she disappeared. Those images in Blowup of Jennifer Kesse person of interest / suspect.

With a lot of work I found the Jennifer Kesse suspect's face in one of the surveillance photos, and this is one of those faces that could match it, including the goatee. Would be nice if Ecklind's records could be checked to determine if he was seeing patients the morning of January 24, 2006, the day Jennifer disappeared about an hour and a half away in Orlando.

Thanks for posting the picture RD. I hope their is a relationship to the
Kesse case with this man. Maybe you could do a side by side picture of what we do have.

Do you have any more information you can add to this on the Kesse case and the connection there may be? I am hoping this leads to something in either case. Daytona does not need to be a place of terror anymore.

Why do you think he gave the DNA to them? Think he would have been forced anyway?

From the website link
Quote:
Ormond Beach, FL - Osteopath Dr. Jerrold Ecklind, 37, likes to pretend to be a cop. But is he a serial killer? That’s what police are investigating, as some really weird events unfold around the genial geriatric specialist. Ecklind, 37, was pulled over last Sunday night. In his Mustang, he had a known prostitute named Gina Oslizlo, a pair of handcuffs, and three guns. Oh, and he’d told Oslizlo that he was a police officer.

A very interesting and scary character this Dr. is.....

Chilling that he specializes in End-Of-Life Care.

yeah, I think it's one of those if I act like I've got nothing to hide maybe they won't try real hard to match the DNA. You can always argue later the DNA, the gloves, whatever, don't fit.

I'll add that image from the Jennifer Kesse surveillance photo, goz.

Daytona Beach Journal comments on the story include:

x-county - deland - 4/29/2008 11:53:00 PM

Doc was arrested in 1989 for armed robbery with a mask and the whole works. If he was convicted he should also be charged posession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

but he also has a concealed carry permit, news reports say he was not convicted. Must be nice.

He clearly appears to be from WV. From his site:

http://jerroldecklinddo.com/ecklind-meet-doctor.html

1996-1997 – Traditional rotating Internship – Logan General Hospital
1992-1996 – Doctorate – West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
1990-1992 – Biology/Chemistry – Davis and Elkins College

Davis and Elkins is a small WV college, and Logan is in WV. 1989 would be when he was just starting college. That's one way to pay tuition.

I found this on a crime blog- (CrimeShadows News)

http://crimeshadows.com/news/2008/05/dr-ecklind-questioned-about-serial.htm

Quote:
Police have also obtained a wallet once belonging to Laquetta Gunther from her friend, Stacy Dittmer. Why police are requesting the wallet at this late date, and if the wallet has anything to do with the investigation into Ecklind remains unknown. The wallet did contain several pieces of paper with phone numbers of Gunther's associates, according to Dittmer.

I have a bad feeling about the Dr.

Also, it is strange he does End-of-Life-Care. Wonder if he is "ending lives?!" I don't mean to feel this way but he seems like the type going by the evidence presented. What was he doing riding around with prostitute, handcuffs and weapons in his car?

This time while on bail the dr. was arrested for using Rx drugs and stumbling all over the place. I pray this guy turns out to be the serial
killer.

SNIP
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- For the second time in a few months, an Ormond Beach doctor is behind bars.

Doctor Jerrold Ecklind had been out on bond since his arrest back in April. Friday he was out on bond again.

In the latest incident, police say he abused some of the stuff he prescribed to his patients.

On Wednesday, Officers in Daytona Beach witnessed Ecklind driving erratically near the intersection of Clyde Morris and Bill France Boulevards.

Police said he swerved completely off the road, and then got back on, accelerating up to 65 miles per hour in a 45 zone.

When police pulled him over, Ecklind stumbled out, wearing his boots were on the wrong feet. Officers say Ecklind’s eyes looked glassy.

This is unreal that the Dr. walked on most of the charges and he was pretending to be a police officer. Wish they would have been able to hear that they questioned him about being the Daytona S. Killer.

Doctor not guilty in kidnapping

Still faces jail time on weapons charge
News-Journal online
By JAY STAPLETON
Staff Writer

Snip
DAYTONA BEACH -- An Ormond Beach doctor was found not guilty of all charges Wednesday -- except a misdemeanor -- on accusations that he pointed a gun and pretended to be a police officer while driving off with a woman in his car.

A jury of five women and one man decided the only crime Dr. Jerrold Ecklind should be found guilty of was improper exhibition of a weapon, meaning he'll face up to a year in jail instead of a maximum 15 years.

In addition to choosing the lesser misdemeanor charge over felony aggravated assault while armed with a firearm, jurors found Ecklind, 38, not guilty of false imprisonment and impersonating a police officer.

The verdict was greeted as the right outcome by Ecklind's lawyer, Mike Lambert.

"Truthfully, it was probably appropriate, under the circumstances," he said. "The jury thought that he did something stupid, and that would be the way to punish it."

Snip

Snip
The jury did not hear testimony that Ecklind had been questioned by police about a month earlier in connection to the unsolved slayings of four Daytona Beach women. At about 6:20 p.m. on March 31, Ecklind was stopped after he was seen picking up a woman on Bellevue Avenue, police records show.

According to reports, Ecklind, who is a doctor of osteopathic medicine and treats mostly geriatric patients, told officers he thought he recognized that woman as a former patient. But as the interview continued, Ecklind admitted he offered the woman "a ride for sex." He gave a voluntary DNA sample, and was cleared in the serial killer case, authorities say.
