|
|
My daughter Maryn, has been missing for two years. No one and I mean no one has seen her or heard from her since the day she walked out the door.
She left to go "talk" to her 21 year old boy friend after they had a disagreement. She was 16 years old at the time.
Because Maryn had a history of running away the sheriffs department was not eager to look for her, and it was several days before they agreed there could be a problem. And then they did not actively search for her, so we were on our own.
What makes our story a bit different from other teen run away stories, is that Maryn has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, because her birth mother chose to drink while she was pregnant. FAS is brain damage that does not change or get better with time. Maryn had been in special ed classes all through school, including middle school and high school. Her mental development is about that of an 8 or 9 year old. Maryn is a very beautiful young lady, and FAS is a disability that you can not see. Because she has very good language skills Maryn appears much more functional than she really is.
THe older Maryn got, the more she resented the increased supervision we felt she needed to be safe. Maryn wanted to fit in and more than anything she wanted a boyfriend. Maryn was taken to a teen dance without my knowledge or permission. We thought she was safe spending the night with a friend who was also in special ed. It was at this dance that Maryn met Hector.
We put up posters offering a reward, we did newspaper articles, and even a short TV spot. We did not receive one response, not even a crank call to claim the reward money. Every weekend for the first year I drove to the neighborhood where I thought she could be. I feel so guilty for not doing it now.
It is difficult to accept that Maryn hated her family so much that she would not contact us. We do not know if Maryn is alive or dead, with good people or bad people. It is as if Maryn was just plucked from the face of this earth.
There is so much more to our story, but to keep this post from turning into a book, I have shortened it as much as I could.
I thank you for listening.

Welcome Darla,
and thanks for posting your story. Before I offer any advice or direction (even though it appears you have done all you can) yet the exposure here will certainly help, can you please link in the poster you have of your daughter. That would be of great help for those that may be reading the board and offer them something to view.
* If you do not know how to put the picture in, just ask someone (such as Jane or Rd) as they know how to post the pic, or just put in the link and they can take it from there.
I'm so sorry about your daughter leaving home. It must be very distressing to you. You are free to share all your feelings here with us.
What would help would be more information such as a description, unless that is on the poster and date she left home, if you know the approx. time. She sounds like a lovely young lady who really has overcome many problems.
We will do the best we can to help.
Bless you and hang in Darla. Thanks for showing up. AND, feel free to post as much as you want to or need to. There is no limit to how much you can express of your feelings. That is why we are here. There is still so much HOPE that your daughter may return since she is a runaway.
Always

Thank you so much for you kind words Goz.
I am relieved to know I can talk about Maryn with people who are not judgmental and can understand what I am going through.
Ls, it was very kind of you to take the time to locate Maryn's poster and place her information on the site. Help like that from a perfect stranger is very thoughtful, and very much appreciated.
I have two pictures I would like to post here, but as I understand it, because I do not have a personal web site they must be sent to an administrator for posting. But I could be very wrong.
So if someone can help me post my pictures it would be great.
Thank you again for all of your help and concern.

Hi Darla,
I am so sorry about your painful loss and not even knowing whether Maryn is alive and well. I read an article in the Canadian edition of Readers Digest several years ago written by an Ontario woman whose adopted FAE daughter was living in the streets for several years. I can't remember all the details - I think the mother could at least keep partial track of what was going on with her daughter. The story had a happy ending. I will try to find some information on that case for you, since it might be helpful.
About posting photos - if you have one already uploaded to the Internet, you can just type [ Img]the web address of the photo and it will appear in your post. Members can upload images to this site, but when I tried, years ago, I'm afraid I couldn't figure it out. I'll try to experiment with it one of these days and let you know if I figure it out. _________________ "They must find it difficult, those who have taken authority as truth, rather than truth as authority".

Hi Darla,
Thanks for your kind words.
You can try as Jane said to put the pictures on the line and see what happens. Maryn is such a beautiful young gal. I took a look at the link that Skipper posted. She is just lovely.
If I never mentioned it before, I found a missing person that was gone for about 15 years and the only thought I had was they may be in NYC. It was a relative of mine and this was many years ago and I thought they may have been involved in the drug scene or we thought they may be dead.
I took what money I had at the time and flew to NYC and I found the person in Central Park. It was like God had directed me. I had no idea where this person was but I found them within hours. It was a miracle so they do happen. The person did not leave with me at that time but another time when I went back to NY again to find the relative. The relative's life has taken a complete change since I worked with the person for years. Now employed, clean, and living a full life. Miracles do happen is the point.
I have a good feeling about your daughter. Please continue to post. We will do all that we can, and as you can see we have a great group here such as Jane and Skipper willing to help. Rd may be able to help with any pics if you can't get them on the board.
Have a nice day and keep the hope alive. Let us know if there is anything else we may do for you.

First, I am never sure if I should just reply to the replies, or begin a new topic?
Thank you Jane for the link to the article about Bonnie Buxton and her daughter Collette. On one hand it was heartbreaking to read, yet on another it was positive with a bit of hope.
As the article mentioned, FAS kids often come in contact with law enforcement, and Maryn was no exception. She was picked up for shoplifting, and brought home by officers more than once after running away. After Maryn had been gone for four or five months we were actually hoping to receive a call from the sheriff department telling us they had Maryn in custody. As time went on, we wondered how she could have stayed out of trouble, or how she avoided being picked up in the frequent truancy sweeps in the area. And many times I expected social services to call and ask if we would be willing to care for the baby she had. The way Maryn was all over the guys, I just knew she would become pregnant in no time at all. But of course it never happened. Every week or so I check the intake log at our women's jail to see if she is there.
When Maryn left she had no ID, no birth certificate, and had no idea what her social security number is. So she couldn't be hired for a job. All of this is what makes us think she could be in Mexico, but who knows.
Goz---what a wonderful story. You are quite a lady. You finding that missing person gives me a bit of hope that miracles do happen. I just wish I could share in your feelings that Maryn is alive and out there somewhere.
I did send two pictures by e-mail to rd. I tried to put them in a post here on the site using [img] had no luck at all. Thank you rd for offering to post them for me.
Thank you all for your support.
[admin note - just reply is fine, then people can follow this thread on your missing daughter Maryn. thanks] |

Hi Darla. Do keep in touch and let us know if any information turns up or just to tell us how you're feeling or share things you miss about Maryn or anything you might want to post about. _________________ "They must find it difficult, those who have taken authority as truth, rather than truth as authority".
