Police are looking for the husband as a “person of interest” in the murders of his wife and infant daughter, according to Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley.

Rachel Entwistle, 27, and her daughter, 9-month-old Lillian, were found dead in their rental home at 6 Cubs Path Sunday at 6:30 p.m. after police responded for a well-being check.

Relatives went to the home Saturday for a planned dinner party but no one answered the door. On Sunday, relatives called police.

Police entered the home and discovered the fully clothed bodies of the victims in the bed of the master bedroom under a pile of blankets

Investigators first believed the cause of death may have been medical or accidental, such as carbon monoxide poisoning.

But as the bodies were being moved, police discovered the wounds from what is believed to be a single small-caliber bullet that passed through both the mother and daughter’s torsos, according to Coakley.

There was little or no blood on the bed, she said. No weapon was found.

Autopsy results are expected tomorrow.

Coakley said Rachael’s husband, Neil, also 27, has been traveling since Friday. She said police have some leads as to where he may be.

Relatives had last spoken to Rachel on Thursday

The family had lived in the house for just 10 days on a short-term lease.

Coakley said Neil Entwistle was an unemployed computer worker who had moved to Hopkinton looking for work with a local tech company. He had several interviews planned.

Neighbors said they had not yet met the couple, who had been married since 2003.

“They had just moved in, we had never met them,” said Anjali Arora, who lives across the street from the crime scene, where police continued to investigate yesterday. “I had never seen anybody in that house. We didn’t see anything happening.”

The five-bedroom home where the victims were found is valued at more than $460,000 and was recently listed for rent at $2,700 a month. [continue]

Stories/pictures/ links

It is believed that Neil Entwistle will not return to the United States for the Funeral of his wife and daughter. Many people on both sides of the Atlantic, and around the world for that matter, are speculating about what type of person would act that way.

Talking heads have been asking legal analysts if that would have a bearing on a prosecutor's case, giving that attorney an advantage in a trial.

We have been advised by a reporter from Britain, who spent an afternoon at our office after the story broke, that libel laws in Britain are so strict that no one can even speculate on a person's guilt. Therefore, much of the speculation on the British television regarding the Entwistle murders has centered around unnamed perpetrators who committed this crime because they were getting back at Neil Entwistle.

Text of the statement by the family of Rachel Entwistle

The following statement was issued Sunday, January 29, by the family of Rachel Entwistle via Attorney Joe Flaherty at the Law Offices of Bellotti & Barretto in Cambridge.

I would like to make a statement on behalf of Rachel Entwistle’s mother, Pricilla, stepfather Joseph Matterazzo, Rachel’s brother, Jerome Souza and all of her extended family and friends.

The entire family is overwhelmed by the loss of Rachel and Lillian and the events of last weekend. We are also grateful for the outpouring of prayers, love and support offered by family, friends and strangers alike.

Rachel was a wonderful wife, daughter, granddaughter, sister and mother. She was always first to share her beliefs, her love and her support for others. She made close friends a part of her family and always kept her family at the center of her life.

With the birth of Rachel’s daughter, Lillian Rose Entwistle last April, Rachel shared her greatest love—being a mother. As the family continues to grieve, we also celebrate and are thankful for the time we had with Rachel and Lilly. The family asks for your continued prayers. They are also asking that you respect their privacy during this most difficult time.

On Wednesday, we will take Rachel and Lillian to their rest. Your willingness to allow us the room to grieve quietly and out of the spotlight will be one more kindness our friends and neighbors have shown in recent days.

The family has every confidence that Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley’s office, the Massachusetts State Police and Hopkinton Police Department will solve this case and bring to justice those responsible. Thank You.

Family spurns Neil

The devastated family of murder victims Rachel and Lillian Entwistle broke their silence yesterday and — in a second glaring omission — again passed up an opportunity to mention the husband and father declared a “person of interest” in the case by prosecutors.

“The entire family is overwhelmed by the loss of Rachel and Lillian and the events of last weekend,” the family said in a statement read by friend and lawyer Joe Flaherty.

“We are also grateful for the outpouring of prayers, love and support offered by family, friends and strangers alike,” the statement continued. “Rachel was a wonderful wife, daughter, granddaughter, sister and mother.”

The family said they were “thankful for the time we had with Rachel and Lilly.” They also said they have “confidence” in investigators, added Flaherty, a former state police homicide investigator. He declined to answer questions.

Rachel, 27, and Lillian, 9 months, were found shot to death a week ago last night in the master bedroom of the rented Hopkinton home the family had moved into 10 days before. Neil Entwistle, also 27, flew to England at about the time of the killings and is holed up in his parents’ home in Worksop, north of London. Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley has called him a “person of interest.”

Middlesex investigators returned yesterday after three days in England during which they hoped to interview Neil Entwistle but apparently were stymied after he talked with a lawyer and canceled a scheduled interview at the U.S. Embassy.

Rachel and Lillian are scheduled to be waked tomorrow night and buried Wednesday following a funeral Mass. The family is asking for respectful distance. “We will take Rachel and Lillian to their rest,” their statement reads. “Your willingness to allow us the room to grieve quietly and out of the spotlight will be one more kindness our friends and neighbors have shown in recent days.” [continue]

Neil Entwistle needs to return to the USA and explain his actions as he is not a "person of interest" but a suspect. We all know what this means...
Any person who would leave town when their family is killed, not return for the funeral, **well it about closes the story for me and many others. In my Opinion, I can assume what took place here. Nothing is shocking to me anymore but he is the scum of the year.

I agree Jane. As I read about the ordeal, Scott Peterson came to mind.

Cold hearts.

(CBS4) HOPKINTON As CBS4’s Dan Rea first reported, 27-year-old Neil Entwistle is now under arrest in England for the murders of his wife and infant daughter in Hopkinton last month.

Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley said Entwistle killed them with his father-in-law’s gun in what was apparently going to be a murder-suicide. But, she said Entwistle returned the gun, then flew to his parents home in England.

Rachel Entwistle's family released a statement Thursday afternoon in which they said they were "deeply saddened" by Neil Entwistle's arrest.

"Rachel and Lilly loved Neil very much. Neil was a trusted husband and father and it is incomprehensible how that love and trust was betrayed in the ultimate act of violence," said the statement, which was read by a family spokesman on behalf of Rachel Entwistle's mother and stepfather, Priscilla and Joseph Matterazzo, and her brother, Jeromy Souza.

"We are heartbroken and at a loss to understand how this happened, but as our pastor, Father MacKenzie, reminded us just eight days ago, 'God didn't do this, there is evil among us," the statement read. "We have always been confident that this case would be solved and those responsible brought to justice."

Entwistle was ordered held in custody Thursday following an extradition hearing at London's Bow Street Magistrates Court, and told a judge he would not agree to a voluntary return to the United States.

District Judge Timothy Workman did not ask Entwistle to enter a plea, and said a decision on whether he would be handed over to U.S authorities had to be made by April 15 under British law.

Entwistle was arrested at a subway station in London just before 7 a.m. Boston time on Thursday. Coakley said he was not fleeing, but appeared to be going to see friends at the time of his arrest.

In a news conference Thursday, Coakley said money problems appear to be the motive.

She said Entwistle had run into major debt with his internet businesses in England, took a lease on a home in Hopkinton, and had no job.

Coakley said Entwistle had taken a .22-caliber handgun from his father-in-law’s home in Carver, and at some point early Friday morning January 20th, he shot his 27-year-old wife Rachel in the head, then shot his 9-month old daughter Lillian in the torso, while they apparently slept in bed.

Coakley said the theory is that Entwistle was then going to shoot himself, but for some unknown reason, he did not.

From there, Coakley said Neil Entwistle then drove about 50 miles and returned the gun to his father-in-law’s home in Carver, while both his father-in-law and Rachel's mother were at work.

Coakley said Entwistle had used the gun at least once before with his father-in-law, so he knew where it was and how to use it.

The gun cabinet was locked, but Neil Entwistle knew where to find a key and had previously fired the same gun with his father in law for target practice, Coakley said.

Early Saturday morning, Coakley says Entwistle went to Logan Airport, bought a one-way ticket to England on British Airways, and then flew out that morning.

Hopkinton police found the bodies Sunday evening, after Rachel’s family alerted them that the family was missing.

Entwistle had been staying in seclusion at his parents home in Worksop, England, until his arrest Thursday morning.

Coakley said police sought an arrest warrant Wednesday in Framingham District Court, after ballistic evidence linked the gun to Entwistle.

He was charged with two counts of murder, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Neil Entwistle, accused of killing wife and baby daughter, asks to be released on bail

BOSTON (AP) — A man accused of killing his wife and baby in their suburban home is asking to be released on bail so he can return to his parents' home in England while awaiting trial.

Lawyers for Neil Entwistle argue he has cooperated with authorities and is not a flight risk. Prosecutors allege he shot Rachel, 27, and their daughter, Lillian, 9 months, after becoming despondent over rising debts and dissatisfaction with his sex life.

Entwistle flew to his parents' home in England the day after the slayings in January, and the bodies were discovered later at the family home in suburban Hopkinton. He was arrested in London and did not fight extradition.

"He never fled. He went home to his parents. Everyone knew where he was. He maintained contact with law enforcement on a daily basis," said one of his lawyers, Stephanie Page. She said Entwistle's parents were willing to put up their home as collateral.

Melissa Sherman, a spokeswoman for Middlesex District Attorney Martha Coakley, said prosecutors will oppose the motion and ask he remain in custody without bail.

Story continues

Rachel Entwistle's family is vehemently opposed to allowing Neil Entwistle out on bail, especially with his request to return to his native England, said Joseph Flaherty, a spokesman for Rachel Entwistle's mother and stepfather, Priscilla and Joseph Matterazzo.

"I can tell you that the family would absolutely oppose any such arrangement," Flaherty said.

The defense motion filed Tuesday asks that Entwistle be placed in his parents' custody and be allowed to live in their home in Worksop, England. His attorneys proposed that he wear an electronic tracking device as a condition of his bail.

The bail request is expected to be argued during a pretrial hearing on Dec. 15. Entwistle's trial is tentatively scheduled to begin in April.

Comments: Doubt it very much Neil will ever get bail!!

What a load of blame to put on an infant - being responsible for debts and sex problems... I always thought a baby's only duties were to coo (and poo) smile (and cry).

What an immature, childish man Neil is. I hope they give him death. Men like him never learn to own up to their responsibilites.

I think you summed it up perfectly Jane!

We have not heard or posted any news on this case in some time.

I did a search and found a few tidbits.

*Recent news I gathered is from Boston Herald Police Bureau Chief

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

The Entwistle trial should take place this winter and Neil will be tried on murder charges. He killed both his wife and daughter.

Two months ago, Neil Entwistle filed court papers to try and get his security deposit and last month's rent back on the house he rented where he allegedly shot his wife and baby daughter.
He told his atty. “he will probably leave (the money and possessions) to Rachel’s family . . . but we need to discuss this.” Wow, what a nice guy!!!

Comments:
I cannot believe Neil is actually trying to get his security deposit back on the house he rented after the tragedy that occurred there. He kills his wife and baby and tries to capitalize on the crime. What a slimeball.

I'm sure as this trial begins, we will hear more about the proceedings.

<snip>
The trial of Neil Entwistle, the Hopkinton dad accused of murdering his wife and baby daughter, is being pushed back to Jan. 28. The case was scheduled to go to trial Oct. 1.

Defense attorney Elliot Weinstein told the Herald he requested, and was granted, the delay yesterday to study DNA evidence in the case.

It's taking too long for this to go to court (IMO).
