Brigham Young student missing in Oregon while visiting sister near Oregon State University. It's nice to see police that actually can recognize when someone is missing. I expect there will be some comparison to Elizabeth Smart though.

College Coed Missing in Oregon
Associated Press
Tuesday, May 25, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Police believe a 19-year-old Eugene woman has been abducted from an apartment complex in this small college town.

Brooke Wilberger was reported missing Monday, after she disappeared from an apartment complex across the street from Oregon State University's football stadium. She had been visiting her sister and brother-in-law while on summer break from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

"There's every indication to us that some kind of crime was committed," said Capt. Robert Deutsch.

Wilberger's family told police that Brooke is a devout, studious Mormon who doesn't smoke, drink or party. Her longtime boyfriend is currently in South America on a mission trip.

"This is a person who is completely responsible, who doesn't have any kind of record," he said. "It's so out of character."

Wilberger had been staying with her sister and brother-in-law, Stephani and Zack Hansen, who manage the Corvallis apartment complex where she was last seen. Her parents, Greg and Cammy Wilberger, live in Veneta, Ore., near Eugene.

Wilberger was helping clean outside the apartments Monday morning when her sister left for a few minutes, Deutsch said.

Hansen told police that when she returned at about 10:30 a.m., her sister was gone. The family reported Wilberger's disappearance later that day, after searching for the missing woman.

Zack Hansen described his sister-in-law as "a very good girl," and said the family believes Wilberger was abducted.

Crews from the Benton County Sheriff's Search and Rescue spent Monday night looking for Wilberger in nearby ravines, creeks and forestland.

Deutsch said the Corvallis police will consult with the FBI on the case.

Other cases of missing college coeds have captured the nation's attention in recent months.

University of Wisconsin student Audrey Seiler disappeared from her apartment in Madison, Wis., March 27 and was found in a nearby marsh on March 31. Police later determined the abduction was a hoax.

Dru Sjodin, who attended the University of North Dakota, was found dead April 17 in a northwest Minnesota ravine, five months after she disappeared from a shopping mall parking lot in Grand Forks, N.D.

Wilberger is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 105 to 110 pounds. She has shoulder-length blonde hair, blue eyes, and was last seen wearing a gray Brigham Young University sweatshirt jeans, small hoop earrings and a ring with the initials "CTR" engraved on it.

Deutsch said that Wilberger also has a scar on her right arm from her elbow to her wrist.

I have been following this case closely. Brooke is so pretty and reminds me a lot of my younger sister. They have re-arrested a pervert who was apparently stealing women's underwear from a college campus nearby. His last name is Kim, he's Asian. I believe he has been released to his parents' custody but he is still a person of high interest. I have a bad feeling about this...they won't get Brooke back alive.

Related Charges?
‘Person of Interest’ in Student’s Disappearance Accused of Attempted Abduction of Another College Student

ABCNEWS.com

A L B A N Y, Ore., Oct. 6, 2004 — A man who police say is a person of interest in the case of missing 19-year-old Brigham Young University student Brooke Wilberger has been charged with the attempted kidnapping of another college student.

Aaron Evans, 21, of Albany, was in court on Tuesday on charges of attempted kidnapping and attempted sexual assault related to an attack on an Oregon State University student last week, as well as unrelated charges of public indecency. He was arrested at his home last Thursday.

Police said they arrested Evans after a woman reported that he seemed to be stalking her at a Corvallis department store.

Another woman, a student at Oregon State, told police a man emerged from some bushes and tried to grab her while she was walking.

The woman was not hurt in the attempted abduction, but police later arrested Evans after a report from a citizen helped them track him down.

Evans worked for a construction company that assigned him to work installing gutters at least twice a week in Corvallis, where Wilberger disappeared, ABC News affiliate KATU News has learned.

Evans worked for the company, Stutzman and Kropf Contractors Inc., from November 2003 until May 7 of this year.

The last day Evans worked at the company was about two weeks before Wilberger disappeared May 24 from a Corvallis apartment complex near the OSU campus.

The owner of the company, Kevin Kropf, told KATU that Evans was fired "based on job performance."

After Evans' arrest last week, Kropf said he was "quite shocked," because he saw no evidence of criminal behavior in his former employee.

However, he did say that Evans' wife seemed concerned about his whereabouts after his workday.

"She would inquire about what time he would leave work," Kropf said. "And when he wouldn't show up after work, she would be concerned."

Some who live near Evans' home say they were surprised to see him get arrested.

"It never dawned on me that he could be the kind of guy who would do this kind of thing," neighbor Doug Engel told KATU News last week. "He just seemed like kind of a happy-go-lucky guy who would have nothing to do with this."

Other neighbors said they felt some relief after the arrest.

"Well, at least if they have somebody it's good, because I work in Corvallis," said Lisa Lovell.

Ten miles away at Oregon State University, students also were breathing a little easier.

Students there have been taking precautions like walking in groups and using free shuttle rides that are being offered.

Wilberger's mysterious disappearance has cast a troubling shadow on the campus.

Police said they consider Evans a person of interest in the case because of the manner of crime he is accused of committing.

Wilberger's family members told KATU news like the arrest of Evans always makes them wonder.

"There's been kind of a lot of ups and downs," Zak Hansen, Brooke's brother-in-law, told KATU News. "Every time you hear something, you think, 'could this be the break?' It's hard sometimes when it turns out not to be as promising as initially you think."

Interest had been focused earlier on a man who was arrested on charges of stealing women's underwear from the laundry rooms of the dorms on the Oregon State campus.

However, the man, Sung Koo Kim, was at home with his family, making online stock trades the morning Brooke Wilberger disappeared, according to his attorney, Janet Hoffman.

Anyone with information on Brooke Wilberger's whereabouts is urged to call the Corvallis Police Department Dispatch Tip Line at (541) 766-6989 or (877) 367-2270. Or visit the Web site: http://www.findbrooke.com.

from Brooke Wilberger's thread on websleuths.com. They have posted that Joel Courtney, a maintenance worker working in the area, will be tried for her murder.

Don't they understand how important it is to parents to get their child back and to have a service and a place to put flowers? If my son murdered someone and the body had never been found...and I knew without a doubt that he committed the crime I would beg him to tell me what he did with the body so the family would know. It is just so cruel not to tell.

You have just described the reasons a sick perv like that enjoys not telling anyone. It's their power trip. And of course it would admit guilt, which he probably hasn't done.

We need lots and lots of cheap cells in the desert for these perverted killers, and he needs to be dropped into one of them.
