Laci's torso washed ashore in San Francisco Bay after being separated from concrete anchors, but we just saw how one woman was dismembered to make it easier to make her disappear. And how many women were found in landfills after being thrown away in suitcases or duffel bags to make them disappear?

So today we have a missing woman's torso washing ashore in a suitcase.

She was dark with a cherry tattoo on one breast on a torso that washed ashore in Mamaroneck, NY, which is an outlying area of Westchester County on a harbor. She was obviously dumped there, it is small and there are no missing women cases that match this woman.

Maybe with some publicity someone may know who this latest tragic loss is. What's the odds that this was done by a violent felon that is still on probation and should be being tracked with a location recorder?

Pretty good, I'd say.

COPS HOPE TATTOO WILL HELP ID WASHED-UP TORSO
FOXNEWS.COM
March 05, 2007

Police hope a cherry tattoo will help identify a woman whose torso was found on a New York beach.

A beachcomber found the dismembered body part in a suitcase at Harbor Island Park in suburban New York City on Saturday, the Journal News reported.

"There's no hair, no fingerprints, no DNA, and the other body parts are spread out over God knows where," said William Paonessa, the deputy mayor of Mamaroneck.

The body part, which was not badly decomposed, was found in a dark-colored bag and is believed to be a woman of Hispanic or African American descent who would have been 35 to 50 years old and weighed 180 to 200 pounds, Lt. James Gaffney said. There was a stab wound, he said Monday, but he would not give details.

The tattoo — two cherries on a green stem — is on her right breast, and cops are hoping it leads to solving the mystery.

"We have been getting phone calls," Gaffney said. "Detectives are acting on leads."

Because of flooding on streams in the region, the torso could have come from almost anywhere around the sound, Mamaroneck police Sgt. Robert Holland said.

Paonessa said the village has no active missing-person cases.

Anyone with information about the woman is asked to call Detective David Casterella or Detective Sgt. Robert Holland of the Mamaroneck police at 914-777-7743 or call the main police line at 914-777-7780.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Hi RD,

As you can imagine there are a lot of recreational and commercial boaters in the various Long Island communities. There is also a lot of drug dealing and distribution, prostitution and gang violence. I'm sure the local detectives are already looking at the usual suspects for this.

Sad to think of this woman at a happier moment enjoying her tattoo and parts of her life. Maybe some of those other parts will wash up later and she'll be identified.

I was reading John Ruskin today. His observation was that the only real "wealth" is life itself. He advised governments and nations to take this into account when setting up their systems. When the almighty buck and shareholder value and drug and oil profits become more important than individual life we are asking for trouble.

Yes, James, what a priceless loss we suffer each day when we lose innocent people.
