------Fruitcake turns down the plea..... I think he should be locked up. Wonder why he did not get charges for the false confession either! Thought the child porn charges would stick. See the links as to why they may not have a case anymore on the porn charges.
What a loser.. Wish this guy was put away for a long while. I find him a danger.

Karr is offered freedom as part of plea deal
POSTED: 5:15 a.m. EDT, September 21, 2006

SANTA ROSA, California (AP) -- One-time JonBenet Ramsey murder suspect John Mark Karr was offered a plea deal Tuesday on child pornography charges that would free him on probation.

Assistant District Attorney Joann Risse said prosecutors would waive three of the five child pornography possession charges against him if he pleaded guilty on two remaining charges.

Karr, 41, would get credit for time served and would be placed on probation for three years. He also would be required to register as a sex offender. (Watch why Karr was offered a deal -- 2:28)

Defense lawyer Robert Amparan said that he would discuss the deal with Karr but that he still believes his client is innocent.

Amparan said the public had received a "false picture" of Karr, whom he described as a "Southern gentleman with a sense of humor."

Karr's bail was set at $200,000 after Judge Cerena Wong called him a flight risk. Karr spent several months in the Sonoma County jail in 2001 awaiting trial on the child porn charges and fled after being released.

Amparan would not say whether his client could afford bail but said Karr would remain behind bars for now.

Karr, a schoolteacher, was arrested August 16 after making phone calls and writing e-mails suggesting he killed Ramsey, a 6-year-old beauty queen, in her Boulder, Colorado, home in December 1996. He was returned to the U.S. from Thailand only to have the Ramsey case collapse.

DNA tests failed to connect Karr to the crime, and investigators had no evidence he was in Boulder at the time of the slaying.

John Mark Karr Rejects Plea Deal in Child Porn Case
Thursday, September 21, 2006

SANTA ROSA, Calif. — One-time JonBenet murder suspect John Mark Karr rejected a deal from prosecutors that would have freed him on probation in exchange for a guilty plea on child pornography charges, his lawyer said Thursday.

"My client has maintained his innocence throughout these proceedings, and he is not going to plead guilty to a crime that he did not commit," Karr's attorney, Robert Amparan, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "We have no intention of accepting that offer."

The deal, presented Tuesday, would have waived three of the five misdemeanor child pornography possession charges against Karr if he pleaded guilty to the two remaining ones. He would get credit for time served, would be placed on probation for three years and would be required to register as a sex offender.

Karr, 41, remained in Sonoma County jail Thursday on $200,000 bail. His trial date was set for Oct. 2.

The plea deal offer came the same day that Sonoma County authorities admitted they lost Karr's computer, seized in 2001, that they said held the five illicit images.

Authorities insisted that the missing computer would not jeopardize their case against Karr because the entire hard drive was copied and the child porn images were printed out.

"They say they have a mirror image. I haven't been provided with a mirror image," Amparan said.

Assistant District Attorney Larry Scoufos has denied that the missing computer was the impetus for offering Karr the plea deal. He did not return calls for comment Thursday.

Karr, who worked as a schoolteacher in Petaluma and Napa in 2001, first made headlines when he was arrested last month after making phone calls and writing e-mails suggesting he killed JonBenet Ramsey, a six-year-old beauty queen, in her Boulder, Colo., home in 1996.

He was returned to the U.S. from Thailand, but the Ramsey case quickly collapsed after DNA failed to connect him to the crime.

Comments: Too bad they lost the computer.......

Karr a "Southern gentleman with a sense of humor"? No, Rhett Butler was a Southern gentleman with a sense of humor. And he knew the difference between Scarlett (a woman) and Bonnie Blue (their little daughter).

On Nancy Grace last night they stated that probably all charges will be dropped against John Mark Karr and he will not even have to register as a sex offender! His 15 minutes of fame is over.

I read today, tomorrow his lawyer is going to ask for a dismissal of all charges.

This is the updated scoop on this story.

I find it hard to believe, with all the things we know Karr has done:

- falsely confessed to a murder
- been taped discussing how much he enjoys raping little girls
- collected child pornography

...I find it hard to believe there's nothing to charge him with - that he gets away with all this (and who knows what else) scott free.

Oh, I forgot...we have to wait until he kills several little girls and then maybe he can be put away.

Judge Dismisses Karr's Kid Porn Charges
By KIM CURTIS

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - The former suspect in the JonBenet Ramsey killing left jail Thursday after a judge dismissed child pornography charges against him, saying prosecutors didn't have enough evidence to take the case to trial.

John Mark Karr, who was not in court for the hearing, was ordered released immediately by Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Rene Chouteau, ending his two-month odyssey in the U.S. criminal justice system after he was extradited from Thailand on suspicion of killing the 6-year-old beauty queen.

He did not comment to reporters as he left the Sonoma County jail flanked by his attorneys, and he rode off in a black Volvo sport-utility vehicle.

Karr, 41, was returned to California last month to face the five-year-old pornography case after DNA evidence cleared him of killing the girl in her Boulder, Colo., home in 1996.

The misdemeanor pornography case fell apart almost as quickly, as investigators admitted losing vital computer evidence that was seized from Karr in April 2001 when he was working as a substitute teacher in Sonoma and Napa counties.

Defense lawyers tried twice unsuccessfully to get the charges dismissed and were seeking to have evidence barred from trial when prosecutors gave up. They said they couldn't establish when the child porn images had been downloaded on Karr's computer.

``The impression that we've had all along is that the prosecution had every intention of getting this case to trial, regardless of the evidence,'' said defense lawyer Robert Amparan. ``I am pleasantly surprised by them having done the right thing.''

Prosecutors acknowledged that if Karr were convicted he would not have served any additional time in jail, because he spent several months behind bars awaiting trial in 2001. They said they were seeking to have him register as a sex offender.

District Attorney Stephan Passalacqua said after the dismissal that his office ``exhausted all resources available'' to prosecute Karr, suggesting that the five-year delay in bringing Karr to trial was to blame for the weakened case.

``Unfortunately, Mr. Karr has benefited from his flight from these charges on the eve of trial in 2001,'' Passalacqua said in a statement.

Karr had fled the state after being released from jail in 2001 and had been on the lam until his arrest in Bangkok, which caused a sensation when he told reporters he was with JonBenet when she died.

Karr, who moved to California from Alabama with his wife and three sons, first came to the attention of Sonoma County officials after an informant told authorities about alarming e-mails he had been sending her.

Investigators looked at Karr in connection with the unsolved 1997 murder of 12-year-old Georgia Moses, whose body was found dumped along a highway in Sonoma County, Karr's lawyers said.

The sexually explicit pictures of children were later found during a search of his home, authorities said.

His arrest led school officials to strip him of his teaching credential, and his marriage ended in divorce later that year.

In hearings over the past two weeks, the defense accused prosecutors of misconduct for failing to alert the judge sooner that evidence was missing, and they questioned the strength of the evidence that remained. The defense also said the search warrants were based on an unreliable witness with a history of mental illness.

Sheriff Bill Cogbill said he accepted the prosecutor's decision to drop the charges.

``We do acknowledge that there were some performance issues five years ago when we worked this case,'' Cogbill said in a statement. ``We're conducting an internal affairs investigation into these issues, and we're continuing an audit of our evidence handling procedures.''

Sadly, but true. This nutcase will continue to walk the streets having an obsession with children- guess there is no law against that, and not enough evidence to charge him for child porn!

Couldn't he be charged for making a false confession? It caused the state to spend lots of money pursuing him and bringing him back. In a sense it's obstruction of justice when someone deliberately causes resources to be misdirected. Just wondering.

Jane: They probably can't charge him with a false confession because the authorities pursued him and he was not the one who came forward. That is just my guess, not having any legal background in this area. The CO DA's Office hunted him down, and Thailand paid for the trip.

Unfortunately, I feel he should be charged anyway but as it stands he gets to walk on all his prior charges too. I hate to think of what could happen if and when he decides to act on his fantasies.
