Missing Prosecutor's Laptop Found in River

By GENARO C. ARMAS
The Associated Press
Monday, August 1, 2005; 2:07 PM

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- A missing prosecutor's laptop computer was pulled from a river near the spot where his car was abandoned more than three months ago, police said Monday.

Two fishermen scooped up the computer in their net Saturday in the Susquehanna River, Bellefonte police said. The fishermen turned it over to state police who determined it belonged to Centre County District Attorney Ray F. Gricar.

The computer had a Centre County government tag but its hard drive was gone, making it very unlikely that it will provide police any clues to Gricar's whereabouts, Bellefonte Police Chief Duane Dixon said.

"It's another piece to the puzzle but it doesn't lead us anywhere," Dixon said.

Gricar, 59, vanished on April 15 after going for a drive on his day off. His car was found the next day in Lewisburg, about 45 miles from his home in Bellefonte in central Pennsylvania. The computer was found under a bridge a couple blocks from the parking lot where the car was found.

Authorities had searched the river several times already. Dive teams searched it again Saturday and Sunday but found nothing else, Dixon said. It was not clear how long the computer had been in the river, he said.

Dixon said the water where the laptop was found is about 4 1/2 to 5 feet deep, which is shallower than when divers searched the river after Gricar disappeared.

Police have said they have few credible leads and have not ruled out foul play.

Gricar was supposed to retire in December after more than two decades as Centre County's top prosecutor. So far, the disappearance doesn't appear to be connected to any of his cases, authorities have said.

What are your thoughts on Mr. Gricar's case?

What happenned to Jonathan Luna? Why was this case dropped?

Just my questions- not that I'm saying the two cases are related!

Luna is interesting. There's a thread on his murder in Latest News. This guy seems clearly to me to be a staged suicide. The hard drive missing from the laptop just confirms that to me.

What is interesting is that both prosecutors willingly went to a remote location where they were murdered. I vaguely recall this prosecutor visited this location frequently. Luna traveled the journey toward his death so many times in the middle of the night gas station attendants remembered him.

Something very strange with both these cases of prosecutors murdered in Pennsylvania.

Larry King had a good segment on Gricar last night. If we can find the transcript let's post it. The courttv analyst and Gricar's family states that the laptop in the river with missing hard drive indicates murder to them. I agree.

Good coverage of this case on Larry King Live last night, similar to the great coverage of Chandra's case which provided a lot of crucial information for Murder on a Horse Trail.

rd: I'll keep responding but nobody has ever called me NANCI..* But hey, feel free, it's on the other thread..

-------->In Ray’s case, I would rather assume he did not commit suicide or willing leave behind his life to start over. Why not suicide? Ray appears to have neither a history of psychological problems nor a history of taking any prescribed medications. Yes, I did hear the shouts of a fellow associate that “Ray could be difficult.” What does that mean? Ray is known to be quiet and hard working. Does that prove anything at all? No, it does not. Rumors always surface about people after they are gone. I find it very heartbreaking to hear and see what is printed about those that have done work for our society after they are gone.

Ray has a daughter that he appears to be close too. Why wouldn't he leave her a note? Why would he leave her in the dark about his depression. He was dating a woman, (I do not know the length of time) but I do know that those closest to me can tell others what is going on in my life.

It is also stated that Ray’s brother committed suicide in the same River. It seems to have effected his family greatly. I would not think he would repeat the deed and put his family through the same hell. I believe a man such as him would leave a note, or give an indication of sorts as to his plans.

In the case of Ray starting over:

Anybody with money vested, WHY NOT WAIT! Look-- the man was set to retire in December, why not just wait for the whole retirement package then take off? I feel anyone who worked all their life wouldn't be stashing away cash, and leave all their assets behind.

I could be off base on any assessment of this situation rd, but I am going on gut.

I don’t buy most of what is being put out there. I’m sure we will hear about Ray’s rampant sex life soon. Of course we will know about his creepy world of slaves, his gay lifestyle and all his little kinky secrets.

I'm sorry I missed the Larry King episode. As of yet, I have not located the transcript and I have been searching. It must not be online.

I say, “Ray has met with foul play, plain and simple!” Then again, I’m the type who doesn’t like to blame the victim. And if Ray committed suicide, bless his soul, he must have been hurting. I hope his
family can find peace.

Also, follow the drugs. It may lead somewhere. Think of his prior cases.

And the hard drive. Where is it?

nanci is propria in the other thread. :)

I saw his girlfriend and his daughter, as well as his nephew. They were heartbroken. Anybody listening to them would know Gricar didn't leave them or commit suicide. In fact, he called his girlfriend just before noon to let her know he was going to be late to meet her later that day. Clearly he was called away unexpectedly to his death.

The hard drive would have been taken by the murderer, it would seem. However, that implies someone who would think that Gricar had life threatening info on them on his laptop. The nephew said Gricar was not a laptop type of computer user and didn't normally carry it with him.

This to me rules out any revenge type killing from an earlier prosecution. It implies Gricar got into something dangerous either as part of his job or in his personal life. The same is true of Luna. And both were not strangers to taking the trip that led to their murders. But it's hard to believe it was part of their prosecutor jobs without bringing in their office in on it.

My guess is they wouldn't take those trips secretly and Gricar bringing his laptop unless they thought they were collaborating in something secret as part of their job. Luna was a fed, Gricar state or local I believe. Hard to imagine they could be related, but both had a good family life from whom they kept this part of their life secret for some mysterious reason.

This has been there all along. I just failed to look under the whole transcript for that day. Figured LK would list it, but he did not.

Here are the inserts on just Ray's case:

KING: On April 15th of this year, the district attorney for Centre County, Pennsylvania, Ray Gricar, vanished and has been missing ever since. To discuss this puzzle, in Dayton, Ohio, is Tony Gricar, the nephew of the missing prosecutor. In Altoona, Pennsylvania, is John Clay, the anchor with WTAJ, who's been covering this story and has had several exclusive interviews with the missing prosecutor's girlfriend. In Altoona, Pennsylvania is Chief Duane Dixon of the Bellefonte Police Department. And in New York, our dear friend, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, Court TV news anchor, co-host of "Both Sides," former assistant district attorney in San Francisco.

All right. John, what's the latest on all of this, John Clay?

JOHN CLAY, ANCHOR, WTAJ-TV: Well, the latest is that they have discovered Ray's work laptop computer right near where the spot was that he left his car. And this is a crucial spot, about 45 minutes away from Bellefonte, where Ray Gricar was a district attorney -- that's a county seat for Centre County. And so, basically that was one of the key pieces of evidence that investigators were trying to get ahold of here. You know, three and a half months later, they discover this laptop in the river near where he left his car. And they pulled it out, but, lo and behold, it's missing the hard drive, which, of course, would have really been the thing that they wanted to get ahold of and find out what he might have been using that laptop for.

KING: Chief Dixon, is there any chance Ray is alive?

CHIEF DUANE DIXON, BELLEFONTE, PA, POLICE DEPARTMENT: We're still holding out hope, but as time goes on, you know, I'm led to believe there's a possibility he's probably not.

KING: Tony, as his nephew, did you know anyone that wanted to harm him?

TONY GRICAR, MISSING PROSECUTOR'S NEPHEW: No. You know, outside of anything from his case history, there's really nothing that speaks to any kind of foul play specifically from that.

KING: So, you don't know of anyone who had any rub against him, other than somebody he might have convicted? GRICAR: No. There's nothing, really. This is his last year in office. He wasn't seeking another term. So really, this year was, I guess, more of a lame duck year for him with his case load.

KING: Kimberly, does this give you pause?

KIMBERLY GUILFOYLE NEWSOM, FORMER SAN FRANCISCO ASSISTANT DA: It absolutely does. And I think the discovery of the laptop with the hard drive missing really just shouts foul play.

This is a man who served with distinction for two decades as a prosecutor. Prosecutors in general are responsible people that don't run out on their family members and loved ones. He enjoyed a loving relationship with his girlfriend, a close relationship with his daughter and with his nephews, and he was set to retire in December.

This was a man that had done it all right, had everything to live for, certainly wouldn't be someone who would walk away. I really do suspect foul play. I think it's so disheartening that there haven't been any other clues except for this laptop. And of course, I'm sure they've checked into everything, his financial state of affairs, all the cases that he has handled. I've kept records of all the cases I've done.

You know, being a prosecutor, you're a public servant, and you meet a lot of people that aren't too happy to be put behind bars. And I'm sure they're being very thorough in checking out any cases he was working on and those people that he has put away.

KING: Tony, he was very proficient in computer skills. Might he have popped the hard drive himself?

GRICAR: You know, he could have. Most laptops, at least that I've used recently, have a hard drive that's removable. It's usually a couple-step process, and sometimes it has a set screw. So it's, you know, not outside the realm of possibility, but you know, what's the point of it, I guess?

KING: Chief, any forensic evidence?

DIXON: No. We really don't have anything as far as any type of forensic evidence. That's what's really hard about this case. You know, it's still classified a missing person's case, and we have no signs of foul play at this point, other than the time period between when he disappeared and he's still missing at this point.

KING: Tony, your father disappeared, did he not, and was found dead, right?

GRICAR: Yes. Yes. My father actually had a long history of documented bipolar depression. So it's a different case there. So he had a lot of issues in his last year that really made it apparent on his case.

You know, Ray actually went through that with us. He helped me on that missing person's investigation and working with the media, much like I'm doing now. And so, he knows the process that we went through and how destructive it was for the family. So, a walk-away or suicide is a little tough to really believe at this point.

KING: He's your father's brother, right, Ray?

GRICAR: That's correct.

KING: All right. John, what have you learned from the girlfriend?

CLAY: Well, that was certainly a key here, is trying to sit down with Patty Fornicola and find out what, you know, she might have known, specifically in the hours before Ray disappeared. And I think that's really interesting.

You know, Ray, you know, he was set to go into work that day on April 15th, tax day for us. And he decided he was going to drive to Lewisburg. He called Patty, told her that he was going to be late, and that's the last we heard from him, right around 11:15 on April 15th.

He made it to Lewisburg, presumably. His car was found there. And there was an eyewitness that said they saw him the next morning. So you know, the question is, what did he do the night of April 15th? They couldn't get ahold of him on his cell phone. He had turned it off. And Patty says -- here's some other interesting things. Patty says there's nothing missing from the house. He didn't take anything with him, but he did take that laptop. And she says that he really wasn't a lap-top guy and found it unique or strange that he would have taken it with him. And you know, here we find that it was discarded in the river near where that car was.

KING: Chief, any chance that this is a missing person like our previous discussion? Someone who just walked away?

DIXON: We're still looking at that possibility. We've always been trying to keep an open mind to anything at this point, because like I said, with the evidence that we have, we have to look at the whole scope of things, including that he might have still walked away, which is another reason why he might have -- if he did this himself, he pulled the hard drive out of the computer. So, There might be information on there we might be able to track where he was going. But like I said, that's -- is one of the scenarios that we're still keeping open.

KING: Kimberly, would you guess foul play?

NEWSOM: Well, right now, I think if you eliminate all the other possibilities, for example, there's no history of mental health issues with him. So, I would eliminate suicide, just going based on the evidence that we have.

It would seem to be he's the type of person that wouldn't walk away. Again, we don't want to rush to judgment. We don't know if it's like a Jennifer Wilbanks situation or some of these other cases like the previous one, but nothing else really points to any other direction than foul play at this juncture.

They've gone through, I'm sure, all the bank records to see if there was any withdrawals, any type of evidence to show that there was financial issues or he was planning on going away or taking a trip. What is very suspicious is that the hard drive is missing from the computer. In the end, I think that will speak volumes about what really happened.

KING: Chief, how hard do you work a case like this?

DIXON: We worked it really hard in the beginning, because we had a lot of leads to work on and it wasn't just us. You know, we're working a team effort here with the FBI, the attorney general's office and the state police and numerous other local agencies.

You know, there's been a lot of investigators working on this case and it's just amazing that all the evidence that we've got is really very little and it all goes to dead ends.

KING: What's the principle city in Center County, Pennsylvania, chief?

DIXON: The -- excuse me again, please?

KING: What's the largest city in Center County?

DIXON: It would be State College, Pennsylvania. It would be about 10 miles from Bellefonte.

KING: The home of Penn State University?

DIXON: There you go, Sir. That's correct.

KING: We'll take a break and come back with more and include your phone calls as well. Don't go away.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PATTY FORNICOLA, GIRLFRIEND OF RAY GRICAR: I want for you to come home. Please call us. We will wait for as long as we need to.

LARA GRICAR, DAUGHTER OF RAY GRICAR: I will wait for as long as it takes to hear from you. I miss you so much and I love you and please call.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

KING: Let's take a call on this intriguing topic.

Toronto. Hello.

CALLER: Hi, Larry. It's Tia.

KING: Hi. CALLER: I'm calling you from Toronto. How are you?

KING: Fine.

CALLER: Great. I wanted to know what kind of cases this guy was prosecuting.

KING: Chief do we know or Kimberly, do you know? Kimberly, we'll try you. Do you know what he was prosecuting?

NEWSOM: Well, he was their top prosecutor there. That's one thing that he's been recognized with distinction. So, I imagine he was just handling serious felony cases, which is why I think it is so crucial to go through his case load. Not just present cases, but past cases. As a prosecutor for a decade, I kept copies of all my cases.

But again, Larry, as you know, I've received two contracts out to have me killed and been attacked in the courtroom. That's why I got into television. But it's serious business and I'm sure they're going through his case files very thoroughly.

KING: Tony, do you suspect that?

GRICAR: You know, it could. You know, it could be one of those insignificant cases that he's prosecuted in the past, where, you know, somebody does a slow burn. You know, there's really nothing so far, that's kind of raised its head from a high profile standpoint. So, you know, it's definitely -- you know, it's one of those things that could be possible.

KING: Chief, anybody like, recently get out of prison, might have a judge?

DIXON: Not that we know about. We've talked to the other office personnel and at this time, we can't connect any case relative to his disappearance.

KING: Augusta, Georgia. Hello.

CALLER: Hello, Larry.

KING: Hi.

CALLER: My question is for the chief. What I would like to know is: Once they found his vehicle, were there any fingerprints or anything of that nature? And also, to his nephew: Has he ever had any type of symptoms of the bipolar?

KING: Chief?

DIXON: The vehicle was processed by the Pennsylvania state police on scene and at their station. They did find five fingerprints. The only couple that was able to be identified, certainly belonged to Ray himself.

KING: And, Tony? GRICAR: No. According to everybody we've talked to, there hasn't been anything, at least of note. You know they did get a warrant for his medical records and nothing showed up in those as well.

KING: Wyoming, Ontario. Hello.

CALLER: Hi, Larry. This is one Alilee (ph), one of your biggest fans.

KING: Thank you.

CALLER: And I understand that he had a daughter and a girlfriend.

KING: Right.

CALLER: So, is he divorced and if so, is there maybe a life insurance policy in place with the ex or even family members?

KING: John Clay, what do we know about that?

CLAY: Well, I haven't heard specifically about life insurance. The chief may know a little more. I mean, the ex-wife was helpful during the investigation. She still lives in the area and she appeared during one of the news conferences as well. So, she has been part of the situation with the police.

KING: Chief, any insurance questions here?

DIXON: There is two ex-wives. We have looked into those situations. I really don't want to go into great detail as far as the financial aspect on the family side there. But that situation has been looked into. At this time, we don't see any issues.

KING: Kimberly, it's weird. The prayer is that he ran away, right?

NEWSOM: Well, you know, Larry, it doesn't look like it, but you never know. Remember, we were all kind of caught unprepared with the Jennifer Wilbanks story, but again, if there's nothing that was really going on in his life as a prosecutor, I don't see how he could be the victim of foul play -- if there wasn't evidence of car jacking, the vehicle wasn't taken, no indicia of foul play in or around the vehicle; no items missing from the home. You go through this checklist and it just makes this case more disturbing.

KING: It is a puzzlement. We thank you all. Tony Gricar, John Clay, Chief Duane Dixon and Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom. END

RD-

I'm aware of both Gricars and Lunas positions. Your correct, one was a fed P, the other is a state. I can't say what may have happenned to Ray, ruling out the theories that are tossed around, but I'm pretty certain he met with foul play. Yes, being lured away because of possibly a job connection that may be related to blackmail or some facet of his life only Ray was aware of.

In J.Lunas care, I may be way off base but I feel even if evidence points to his secret meetings, his use of a private credit card, he was doing work for the government. I agree with one poster. He does have the "BOO" factor going for him! He could be sweet with the ladies but I think this smells of a duck, informer meetings. I have other threads of information on Luna I have been reading over the last week. I will post them in, even if it mentions the new book and it may be a shady source. It will be up to you to use the delete function after reading the material.

I will not buy into the fact his death was of a personal nature that had no connection with Federal work. Not gonna do it!

MISSING DATA FILE FOR
Ray F. Gricar

Missing Prosecutor's Laptop Found
Police say two fishermen found a laptop computer at the bottom of a river that belonged to a county prosecutor who has been missing for more than 3 months.

The laptop was found Saturday in the Susquehanna River under a bridge and was turned over to state police. Cops say the laptop was missing its hard drive. Authorities had searched the river several times already. Dive teams searched it again but found nothing else.

Pennsylvania Prosecutor Disappears

Centre County District Attorney Ray F. Gricar, 59, has been missing since Friday, April 15th, 2005. Family and friends of Ray Gricar say they are baffled by claims the missing district attorney was seen May 27th near Detroit but are hopeful the reported sightings will further the investigation.

A customer at a restaurant in Southfield, MI said he thinks he saw Gricar eating with a woman who appeared to be in her early 70's. The customer told police he made eye contact with the man and said hello.

The witness said as he was sitting down to dinner with his daughter that he "knew him from somewhere," Bellefonte Police Chief Duane Dixon said.

That night, the witness saw a rerun of Greta Van Susteren's show on Fox that featured an interview with Gricar's housemate and girlfriend, Patty Fornicola.

"He saw that and said, 'That's where I knew him from," Dixon said.

Bellefonte police sent a photograph of Gricar and photos of seven similar looking men to authorities in Southfield for the customer to examine. Darrel Zaccagni, a Bellefonte officer, said the man immediately picked out Gricar's photo as the man he saw at the restaurant.

Police are treating the reported sighting as the first real lead in the case since a similar sighting in Wilkes-Barre on April 19th.

"I'm hoping it's an accurate sighting," Fornicola said. "But I don't know what to think."

Gricar has no friends or family in Detroit, Fornicola said. She said that, as far as she knows, he's never visited that area.

Police have no theories as to why Ray Gricar would be in Michigan.

According to investigators there has been no activity on Gricar's bank accounts or credit cards since his disappearance, according to police.

Police in Southfield are also looking into whether the man may have stayed at a hotel close to the restaurant.

Even as they look into the possible sighting, police are continuing to investigate other explanations for Gricar's disappearance, including foul play.

Family Makes Pleas At Press Conference
At a news conference the Monday after Gricar disappeared, authorities said they had called the FBI for help and that no leads have emerged since the prosecutor's car was found over the weekend in Lewisburg, about 45 miles east of his home in Bellefonte.

Gricar's daughter Lara stepped to the podium and said in a statement directed at her father, "My heart aches deeply, very deeply, for your presence.''

"I want more than anything to hear your voice and for you to hug me. Maybe we can go for a hike - go hike up a mountain and sit and talk,'' said Lara Gricar. "Please call. To everyone else out there, if you have seen my father, please contact police.''

Patty Fornicola, Ray Gricar's longtime girlfriend and a clerk at the DA's office, also spoke.

"Ray, I love you very much and I miss you. I want you to come home. Please call us. We will wait for as long as we need,'' Fornicola said.

Digging For Clues
Bellefonte Police Chief Duane Dixon said he had contacted the FBI on Monday to help analyze Ray Gricar's credit card and phone records. Authorities were also studying Ray Gricar's calendar and files on his computer.

Authorities have said there were no signs of foul play and that they did not think the disappearance was related to any of his cases.

"I don't have a logical theory at this point,'' Dixon said.

Authorities in Bellefonte said Ray Gricar did not have any personal or family problems, though colleagues said he had been working hard recently.

Gricar's red-and-white Mini Cooper was found Saturday in a parking lot across the street from an antiques market he frequented in Lewisburg. The market was on a lot near a small wooded area that backs up to the Susquehanna River. An abandoned, rusted railroad bridge sits nearby, along with a newer bridge that carries cars across the river.

State police have been searching the river by helicopter but have found nothing, Dixon said. Authorities also brought in a bloodhound and interviewed workers inside the market. At least one employee there told police she might have seen Gricar there on Saturday.

Gricar was last seen by his girlfriend before she left for work Friday morning. He was scheduled to take a half-day off work.

Gricar called Fornicola at 11:30 a.m. from his cell phone on a road leading to Lewisburg, saying he was taking the whole day off. It was the last time anyone heard from him and the last time his cell phone was used, police said.

Gricar's Brother Disappears In 1996

Gricar's 53-year-old brother, Roy J. Gricar, vanished under similar circumstances in May 1996, and was later ruled to have drowned himself, The Centre Daily Times reported.

The West Chester, Ohio, resident told his wife he was going out on an errand and never returned, according to an account at the time in the Dayton Daily News. His car was found abandoned near a river, and his body was later pulled from the water.

/ Quote

It sees rather odd that if Garcia's death, presumed death, is a suicide, then the old adage that bodies do not get rid of themselves, then where is Garcia's body? Who stood to gain? One wonders if Garcia had information about someone on the hard drive? If Garcia was around the next day, why hadn't he called his wife to say he wasn't coming home? Of course there will be all kinds of reports of sitings and it is difficult to know which ones are true.

One wonders if Ray and Roy's deaths are related, very strange? Perhaps Garcia had proof that Roy's death was not suicidal? The plot get thicker and thicker if one considers perhaps a link to Luna. It is possible. Too bad we have no access to the information that the police have, gee that would save a whole lot of guessing. Ray's death seems very suspicious with no body in sight, did he walk away from his life, or was he murdered, and who knows if he was being blackmailed or what?

With no body it is difficult to tell...the girlfriend seems like she might be able to tell a little more, because it seems unlikely for a lawyer to take the afternoon off on tax day!!!!!! A death in the family of your immediate family would be the only way to get the day off. Something does not seem right here. It would be interesting to know what Garcia said at work as to why he was leaving for the afternoon. It seems like a very fishy excuse for Garcia to give, unless of course his wife knew nothing about business and did not know it was tax day. Usually tax day, year end is a very stressful day one would think that before D-Day that one might be having to put in some extra time at work? This is very curious, but perhaps someone else did Garcia's paper work???

Interesting that his girlfriend earlier reported that Garcia had left on an errant? Perhaps she was misquoted?

Grica called his girlfriend to say he would be late meeting her. That was about 11:30 am I believe and he never contacted anyone again. One eyewitness thinks he saw him the next day but I don't put any credence in that.

Weighted down he could be anywhere in the river could he not? Fishermen happened to hook his laptop. I suppose the police would have done another search of the river at that spot without finding him.

As we have seen with missing women, with no body the woman is suspected of faking a death and running away. At least that's what the murderer wants us to think, and unfortunately that's what some people do.

The blackmail theory posted seems logical on Ray's disappearance and I have read postings that some do believe that Ray and Luna can be connected. I'm unsure if this connection is possible.

I am pretty positive the girlfriend had nothing to do with Rays disappearance considering she did pass a polygraph and it seems she had nothing to gain by him going missing. (insurance, house, etc)
I have not seen anything printed to state any money directed to her.

*I never realized it was Tax Day when Ray went missing*

A good pt. you mention rd in comparing Rays story with that of missing women that maybe the killer wants us to think Ray started a new life or faked his own death!

BELLEFONTE -- The investigation into the disappearance of Centre County's district attorney almost four months ago has largely stalled, despite last week's discovery of his laptop computer in the Susquehanna River.

News broke early last week that two fisherman found Ray Gricar's county-issued laptop, missing since Gricar disappeared on April 15, under the state Route 45 bridge in Lewisburg. But forensic analysts found that the computer's hard drive had been removed, rendering the find more or less useless.

The discovery catapulted Gricar's disappearance back into the news, Bellefonte police Chief Duane Dixon said, which increases the chance that new leads could come in on the case. So far, however, none have materialized.

Other than a few reports of sightings in the Lewisburg on April 16 and Wilkes-Barre on April 19, police have little information to go on in their investigation into his disappearance. Other sightings -- in Michigan, Ohio and Illinois -- have been unsubstantiated or determined to be cases of mistaken identity. No evidence was found in or around the car, parked in a Lewisburg parking lot and spotted on April 16 by a passing state trooper, that would help the police investigation. Loved ones and coworkers have provided no helpful information. Gricar's girlfriend and housemate Patty Fornicola took, and passed, a lie detector test last month.

"We don't even know if he's dead," Dixon said. "It's still classified as just a missing persons case."

I haven't seen the statement that Garcia's girlfriend passed a lie detector
examination. It seems that the trail has gone cold, if the car and laptop are in or by the river, logically the body should be near. Perhaps something will turn up in the next little while if the police are concentrated on the river. It is difficult to know how deep or strong the currents are, heaven forbid that I have to search for mapquest, it seems as though I will have to do some research as rivers vary greatly in the current and depth.

The Susquehanna River is the largest river solely flowing in the United States, (16th largest in river in the US) this river is hugh, and I visted near there in 1989. I could not find much on the current conditions (got tired of reading) or the depths of the river, however, it is possible that Ray's body drifted down river.. It's course is 444 miles. Perhaps Ray will turn up down river several hundreds of miles as in the case of Don Wiley, who allegedly blew off the Bridge by a passing truck in Memphis and ended up in Sachez!!!

Guess we will have to wait to see what the river search yeilds, and hopefully the police are dreging or dragging the river near where the laptop was found!

Woman takes photo of man she says looked like missing DA

The Associated Press August 15, 2005

Email to a friend-

Investigators looking for a missing district attorney sought more information Monday about pictures of a man eating at a Texas restaurant who they say resembles the prosecutor.

Centre County District Attorney Ray F. Gricar was reported missing on April 15 after taking a drive on his day off. Dozens of tips and reported sightings have come into police since he disappeared.

On Monday, Bellefonte Police Officer Darrel Zaccagni, the lead investigator, said some family members, colleagues and police think the man in the photos resembles Gricar. Others disagree.

"My gut feeling is it's not him. But there are a lot of (physical) similarities where we have to look at it closer," Zaccagni said.

The pictures, which were taken with a cell phone camera and are not of good quality, were snapped last week by a woman at a restaurant in Nacogdoches, Texas, who struck up a conversation with the man sitting at a nearby table, Zaccagni said.

The woman, who is from East Texas, then took pictures of family members sitting with her, getting the man in the background while he was eating. He cannot be seen clearly.

According to investigators, the woman then turned the photos over to police, saying she thought it was Gricar. The prosecutor has no known ties to the Nacogdoches area.

Authorities there have been alerted and Zaccagni said he hopes the man will come forward.

Gricar's name had resurfaced in the news earlier this month after his government-issued laptop computer was found without its hard drive by fishermen in the Susquehanna River in Lewisburg, not far from where the prosecutor's car was found on April 16.

Police say they are still considering all scenarios, including foul play.

Gricar was supposed to retire in December after over two decades as Centre County's top prosecutor.

Would be willing to discuss this case.

You'd certainly think he'd wait a few months for his retirement before taking off for Texas, wouldn't you, G? :) That must be a real true crime follower down there that thought she recognized him. Whether it is or not, and of course I doubt it, got to like her efforts to talk to him and get him in the pictures to give to police!

Police: Girlfriend of missing DA passes lie detector

BELLEFONTE -- The girlfriend of missing District Attorney Ray Gricar took and passed a lie detector test Friday, Bellefonte police said.

The test, given by the Secret Service at the Ferguson Township building, included questions about whether Patty Fornicola had any involvement with Gricar's disappearance April 15 and whether she knew if he was dead or alive, according to Bellefonte police Officer Darrel Zaccagni, who was present for the test.

"She passed everything with flying colors," he said.

The test results were analyzed on site, according to Zaccagni, and then sent to Washington, D.C., to be doublechecked. Bellefonte police are still waiting on a copy of the official results.

Gricar reportedly seen at Texas restaurant

By Pete Bosak

BELLEFONTE -- Investigators in the case of missing Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar have pictures taken by a woman who thinks she may have photographed the missing prosecutor in Texas.

Police have shown the images, which the woman took with her cell phone camera, to Gricar's live-in girlfriend, Patty Fornicola, who told investigators the man pictured could be the missing prosecutor, Bellefonte police officer Darrel Zaccagni said.

"She believes there is a distinct possibility it may be Ray," Zaccagni said Monday. "When I first looked at it I thought, 'That's Ray.' Then I looked at it again and thought, 'No.' "

Having seen Gricar's photograph in news coverage, the woman, whose name was not released by police, spotted a man she thought was Gricar at a Chili's restaurant in Nacogdoches, Texas, last week.

The woman, believing the man was Gricar, approached him and asked him for directions to a nearby zoo, Zaccagni said. The man replied that he was not from the area.

When she pressed him further as to where he was from, the man seemed evasive before finally saying Tennessee, Zaccagni said. The woman said he did not have a Southern accent.

At some point, she took pictures of the man with her relatives in the photographs, Zaccagni said.

That cell phone camera is being shipped to Bellefonte police so they can attempt to remove a higher-quality image directly from the device. The e-mailed pictures police now have are of low quality. Those images are not yet being released to the public, Zaccagni said, although they have been released to Gricar's family.

"There is some credibility to it," Zaccagni said. "People are 50-50. Some people think it's him; some people think no way."

Bellefonte investigators are in touch with Texas authorities, who are searching for the man. He paid with cash, so authorities do not even have a credit card receipt to go on.

"We want to locate this individual," Zaccagni said. "We're just hoping this guy steps forward. At least then the family will know."

Gricar, 59, disappeared April 15. About 11:30 a.m. that day, he called Fornicola to say he was taking a drive on state Route 192 in Brush Valley.

Fornicola called police 12 hours later when Gricar did not return.

Gricar's red and white Mini Cooper was found the next day in a Lewisburg parking lot with his cell phone inside.

Police have pursued possible sightings in Wilkes-Barre, Ohio, Michigan and Maryland and elsewhere, but none have panned out.

On July 30, fisherman scooped Gricar's laptop computer out of the Susquehanna River. The county-issued computer's hard drive was missing, so it was of no investigative help to police.

I do admire her for her spunk rd. I'm sure I would have gotten the "mysterious TN boy to sit at the table and got a few shots myself with him. "

No doubt by the looks of the photos, it is not Ray. I didn't need to see these pictures to be sure of that. As I was posting this morning I was thinking----

POOR RAY- he is being spotted more places than Elvis has been.

I think you are right. If he wanted to go on out to TX, he could have waited for his retirement. Wonder what this old town had that could have been in his plans. I don't have a map in front of me, but I bet Ray was on his way to see Bush. After all, it must be Bush's fault he disappeared - He seems to be the blame for everything that goes wrong. This theory should be making the headlines soon.

I really feel sorry for Rays family. But, I feel all aspects must be checked out, not the Bush theory. I leave those to the Bush haters to moll over.

Someone phoned me last night and proposed the "Witness Protection Theory" again. I will have to go back to the articles and find out why the police discredit this theory.

peripeteia: I do hope the police have done their jobs and checked out the river. I would assume this would have been their first task. I do not know anything about river currents but if you find out anymore interesting facts, keep me posted.

Once again, I feel Ray met with foul play. I hope this mystery will be solved soon.
