TELEVISION
He's thinking inside the box
*Jerry Bruckheimer has brought a mega-movie mentality to the small screen, and the concept has caught on big time.
By Scott Collins and Maria Elena Fernandez, Times Staff Writers
May 23, 2005

excerpt

In an astonishing blitz at the advertising "upfronts" in New York last week, network executives picked up four of Bruckheimer's five pilots as new fall series, including NBC's Pentagon thriller "E-Ring" and CBS' legal drama "Close to Home." When added to his existing shows — including the three "CSI" series, "Without a Trace" and "The Amazing Race" — Bruckheimer will oversee 10 prime-time series in the 2005-06 season, the most ever for an individual producer...

Bruckheimer might not be known for stirring oratory (as "Amazing Race" executive producer Bertram Van Munster explained: "He's not a man of many words, but what he does say is really on the money"). But it's clear that he and his top TV lieutenant, ex-Fox executive Jonathan Littman, have succeeded in bringing relatively sophisticated, feature-style storytelling and production values into episodic television — a format that a couple of seasons ago was seen as creatively and financially bereft, with tens of millions of viewers flocking to "reality" shows.

Now millions flock to Bruckheimer shows, a fact not lost on network executives. His original "CSI" series is TV's most-watched drama, and "Cold Case," "Without a Trace," "The Amazing Race" and the "CSI" spinoffs are usually in the top 20...

Littman, closer to the day-to-day mechanics of production, came up with the initial concepts for two series, "Without a Trace," which Littman said was inspired by his fascination with the mystery surrounding Washington intern Chandra Levy, and the new "Close to Home," a courtroom drama centered on a suburban female prosecutor that was inspired by the Laci Peterson murder case. Both fit squarely in the genre that stirs Littman most: "When we sold 'CSI,' everyone said, 'Mystery can't be done, [the audience will] skew too old, no network is going to buy it,' " Littman recalled. But "I've never known anyone to put down a good" mystery.

My friend Tracey Gardner Tetso will be featured on Without a Trace Thursday, May 26, 2005. I hope someone watching this will remember something about the night she disappeared.

I watched Without a Trace and did catch the spot/feature about Tracey. I hope that someone noticed her that night and calls in with info.

Any news on the husband?

The husband is going on with his life like he never had a wife. He just got a new dirt bike, looking to buy a boat, is dating. But don't forget in the media his fake tears, he just wants her home. Why would he want her home, because she wouldn't let him buy a boat or junk up her, yes her house with all his junk cars, which he is doing now. Not one search has he gone on, has not co-operated with detectives. He wouldn't even speak with Americas Most Wanteds producers about the show. They inserted old film footage of him with his fake tears. He feels he has gotten away with the perfect murder and he stands to inherit her home and her vehicles. She worked hard for everything she had and he wasn't going to leave this relationship empty handed like he did with his first marriage. It's a sad state of affairs when someone can get away with murder of their wife because they stand behind a lawyer and don't have to take a lie detector test which we all know would let the world know the truth what happened to Tracey. God willing someone saw the mullet head in the parking lot of Days Inn, Giant Food Bowling alley on Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie that night and will identify him as the person we all know was driving her car.

Essentially Scott Peterson all over again. The press is spooked from covering disappeared wives and girlfriends, they get hammered by certain aspects of American society that think it unseemly to consider it newsworthy to cover.

Tracey's disappearance was apparently a little too messy for them to deal with. Too obvious a domestic murder I guess, not enough glitz. And they're probably tired of being hammered despite the interest from viewers in the Chandra, Laci, Lori, Elizabeth, runaway bride, and others that did catch their attention.

It's important for us as a country to record GPS locations of violent ex-felons on probation to be able to rule out the entire suspect population when a woman disappears, making it that much more obvious that it is the significant other that makes women disappear. We all know that. They just don't videotape themselves doing it for some strange reason.

Thanks for the news, Butterfly. This guy is so obvious it's sure to get him caught- with the girlfriend and the lifestyle. Certainly LE knows...

You mention parking lots such as Days Inn and Giant Food- don't they have video from that time frame? Or is that being kept secret?

Rd, isn't it true that most all vehicles now have what is equivalent to the On Star type tracking where they can determine where you've been? I read about that some time ago. That is the main reason that they want to get rid of all the old vehicles without tracking capabilities. Seems that technology could be put to good use in this case.

I don't know whether those vehicles are tracked unless you pay the monthly charge or if it is turned off. Same technology is involved if somebody has their cell phone on as Peterson did when driving to the Bay.

There was video of the vehicle being parked, skipper, which butterfly was probably referring to. They showed the video on Greta I believe which I posted about in another thread. They can't make out who is getting out of the car, although they tried image enhancement from the experts. They do have the general size of the guy though.

There are two separate things. One is OnStar, which is a satelite that tracks your car wherever you are and you can press a button to call for ambulance or police. It is available in GM cars and is generally a feature in all of the new GM cars.

The other thing is something built into some if not all new cars that, I've heard, can tell an insurance company what happened in a serious accident. Unsure if true, but I think it is.

That would be different than the cellular phone technology then. Thanks for that info, blondie.
