The grand jury needs to find the answers to some questions about Gary's whereabouts on May 1, 2001, and why did Gary Condit withold information regarding Chandra's whereabouts from her parents, and why he waited two days before contacting the police when he believed chandra was on a train.
That's some of the most crucial questions to be answered, but they won't be coming from Condit. In the US, a person has a constitutional right to refuse to answer questions that may incriminate him, that is, answers that would show he is guilty.
Condit has done that. He's not going to answer questions under oath. He ran various scams by the DC police to keep them from looking for Chandra early on when forensic evidence could have been obtained. He succeeded, with the help of a compliant police department afraid to bite the hand that feeds them.

Hey, I found an interesting article by USA Today. Interesting from the 'spin' perspective that is:

Ex-Calif. congressman Gary Condit wins suit
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Former Rep. Gary Condit has settled his $11 million defamation lawsuit against writer Dominick Dunne, accepting an undisclosed amount of money and an apology for claims the writer made about Condit's role in the disappearance of intern Chandra Levy.
'I accept Mr. Dunne's apology and am pleased that this action has been amicably resolved,' Condit said in the statement.
By Julie Jacobson, AP
In a statement released from Condit lawyer Lin Wood on Tuesday, Dunne said he did "not say or intend to imply that Mr. Condit was complicit in her disappearance, and to the extent my comment may have been misinterpreted, I apologize for them."
"I accept Mr. Dunne's apology and am pleased that this action has been amicably resolved," Condit said in the statement.
Dunne specifically renounced a story he made on radio's "Laura Ingraham Show" in December 2001 in which Dunne said a man told him Condit frequented Middle Eastern embassy sex parties. Dunne had also made comments in TV interviews that he believed Condit knew more about Levy's disappearance than he was telling authorities.
Condit argued the statements led millions of people to believe he was criminally involved in Levy's death, and contributed to his loss in a March 2002 primary election. Condit has denied any involvement or knowledge of Levy's May 2001 disappearance, or her death. Her body was found in a Washington, D.C., park in May 2002.
"I am delighted that the suit has been settled," Dunne said in a separate statement e-mailed Tuesday by his agent, Owen Laster.
Condit reportedly told police he had an affair with Levy, but in a sworn deposition in the defamation case, he denied being romantically involved with the intern and insisted "we were friends."

Yes, skipper, no mention that Condit "won" this suit after midnight the night before he was to be required to answer questions under oath. And no mention as other reporters pointed out that he has done this in all his settlements.
He bluffs until he must answer questions, then he accepts and apology and "wins". An apology for any misunderstandings, that is.

rd and skipper. Condit has held the media at bay now for a long time with his lawsuits, and Carolyn's lawsuits. Maybe the media weren't censored, but they were being careful of what they said, and some were saying nothing.
Now that phase is about over, or maybe is over. Possibly Condit can find someone else to sue, but the statute of limitations seems to have taken care of most of that. Unless he can find some new cause of action. With the pressure on the press gone some individuals are going to start speaking out. Some will be speaking out for Condit as well as others looking at his past performances more closely. It may be easier for people to speak out now also if they know that Condit can not respond, which has been the case all along, but probably most of us did not think that he really would not respond at all.
Anyway it seems that there will be more discussion of the Chandra Levy case, maybe some of it by new people who did not speak out before. More discussion can only lead to more truth, which is what is needed.

I doubt it. Condit could sue again over any new stuff similar to what he has sued over before. On the other hand, no one will be talking about any of this unless there's a development in the case.
Condit traded hopes for a retirement fortune for this to go away. Had he answered questions, more questions would be raised.
He can't afford that, not even with 11 milliion dollars.
